Instant Dads (2005)
A Surprisingly Moving Film
As I write this review of a 2005 film being watched in 2020, it is remarkable how much our world has changed and evolved. We hardly think twice about a child having two fathers, which was something of a scandal 15 years ago. The film surprised me in the best ways. For an independent film on a small budget, it it shot well with strong performances and a gripping story. Nina Kaczorowski is incredibly good as a dying mother wanting the best for her young son through her ex, played by Steve Hasley, and his long time boyfriend Peter (Derek Maki). Steve and Derek have lovely chemistry, and Steve grounds the film with a natural performance while Maki provides excellent comic relief and foil to Steve. The film's events are moving to anyone watching, and feature good locations in California. All in all, this is a wonderful independent film with a passionate and talented director/writer/producer in Maki. I only wish we could see the film now through a 2020 lense. Kudos to all involved. I would recommend this film to anyone especially indie fans, LGBTQ, and people needing a good family story!
