Black Adam (2022)
One of my favorite DC Superhero Movies - Finally something with depth
I did not see any previews and had not heard of this movie. Where have you been hiding this? It certainly didn't get the PR that other similar movies get. A friend suggested it, knowing I love superhero type of movies. When I heard it was DC, I responded "meh" yet gave it a shot.
I am so happy I did, this movie takes us into a different area of the world with a hint of Indiana Jones, ties in ancient history and a bit of a twist, a couple unexpected delights in a world of predictability. I enjoyed the fresh approach and evolution of characters, with a a few little fun quips mixed in. In addition to an exciting journey as the story unfolded, Dwayne Johnson is magnificent in the lead role as Black Adam, and played his part superbly. I resonated with his anguish. I also loved Pierce Brosnan as the charming and wise Fate.
This movie peels back the layers and holds a mirror up to our own society and how we are quick to judge and condemn without looking deeper to get a better understanding and see the whole picture.
I truly hope we see more of Black Adam as there is unlimited possibilities in where the next adventure can take us, and dare we see Fate again? Kudos DC for bringing something with a little grit and depth, this definitely is one of your best.
Pitch Perfect 2 (2015)
Not as good as the first
I really enjoyed Pitch Perfect 1, and I enjoyed the story line and characters in Pitch Perfect 2, but the songs... the songs were lackluster, lukewarm, not just for the bellas but the treblemakers and DSM, with the exception of their first song (cars). The last original song was nice.. but didn't have that emotional element that makes one feel moved by the music.
Mr. Right (2015)
My favorite movie!
I never saw this movie advertised in the theaters and feel it somehow snuck in under the radar else it would have been a blockbuster.
So lucky to come across this one. I've watched this movie (3) times already. It is a light, whimsical, action packed movie that is utterly delightful to watch. The main characters are wonderful together. Plus, no women were exploited in the making of this movie.
I found my foot tapping and a big smile on my face throughout the film. Wish more movies were like this one.
If you are stuffy, serious, and don't like to have fun, this movie may not be for you.
Blindspotting (2018)
Almost an 8
This movie was a lovely peek into this world from a variety of perspectives and thus was not simply propaganda. I enjoyed getting a glimpse of life from the eyes of a few characters and viewpoints. However, the only thing that was rather off putting was the "rap" session at the end. Would have given an 8 if they would have continued to allow the flow of the movie without that.
Promised Land (2012)
Excellent Eye Opener
Excellent movie that offers a realistic look into the world of corporate tactics and behavioral manipulation of the masses. It would seem that the focus was to engage the viewers with the hopes of opening eyes and taking the blinders off. This movie isn't a cheesy film with fight scenes, sex, or cheap thrills but instead offers depth. I can only guess that many of these reviews are from fracking organizations to keep this movie from getting the attention it deserves.
A Dog's Purpose (2017)
Heartwarming and enlightening
What a lovely movie, ties you into the main character deeply and keeps his voice simple as a dog would actually be more like. However, this movie touches on a variety of types of people and lives and how people are moreso than one might think. A dogs purpose is also each of our purposes. Watching this movie is a great inspiration on how to live life. Well thought out, creative, with layers. Touches on the heartstrings a lot - if you are an animal lover bring a box of tissues.
Sztuka kochania. Historia Michaliny Wislockiej (2017)
Disappointed
I watched this movie believing that it might have a complex story yet was grossly disappointed. If you remove all of the sex scenes where the women are treated as pure objects on display, you will lost about half of the movie. This may be an autobiography which gave me enthusiasm in the beginning but the story-line falls flat. The only lingering effect is the typical misogyny of a director using this opportunity to exploit women instead of telling a quality story. If your actresses have to get naked to tell a story, you are doing it wrong.
Manchester by the Sea (2016)
Lackluster
How disappointed I am to see today's movies. Either lacking of substance or just simply distastefully full of sex scenes which is supposed to give some sort of oversight to the lack of plot and substance?
Why must I be relegated to watching older American and also older and present day foreign films for actual substance in movies these days.
Seeing 8.4 on the IMDb was why I chose to watch this movie and also believing that perhaps this lead was better than his brother. The plot and lead fell flat with the movie ending and leaving me feeling I wasted my time.
Affleck, much like his brother, had one face, one expression with little depth behind it for most of the movie. There were parts where one might think something is going to happen that makes this movie worthwhile, but nothing does. In the end, I thought, well maybe this is just a boring, "Based on a true story" so it wasn't supposed to be creative or interesting. However, I felt annoyed at the end of this movie.
La La Land (2016)
Good movie but not as much as the hype suggests
This movie was not bad, the leads were dynamic in their acting skills and what was refreshing was relying purely on the merits of the story and not having women exploited and objectified in cheap sexist scenes. Yet I felt this movie was OK. I did enjoy the actors being authentic in song and the unique spin which I won't advise details on. Worth a watch and it may touch you a bit, yet it cannot compare with movie greats worthy of such praise. If you are looking for a light and fun film, this movie is your ticket even though it will make you think and invoke sadness at a point. Perhaps it will help people better look at their own lives and how they value priorities, if so, then it would be worth suggesting for a night out.
