Barbie (2023)
I'm so glad I waited until it was released on HBO Max and I can't believe everyone claims it's for adults
With all the hype about this movie I was really tempted to see it on the big screen. Not for kids, deep and funny? Count me in! I just didn't get around to seeing it and I'm so glad. It would obviously bore young children, but how did it not bore every other adult as well? What a lame comedy-only one scene made me chuckle, the rest of the "funny" parts made me roll my eyes. I'd say it's more of a tween movie, or even teen if you keep them under a rock. But I don't know what the excuse is for adults thinking it's an amazing, brilliant comedy. And the whole deep part was pretty lame as soon as we saw that Barbie realized that the real world isn't how it is in hers.
Chernobyl: The Lost Tapes (2022)
If you have interest in Chernobyl you should see this.
I read the book "Voices From Chernobyl" (incredible book) and watched the docuseries on HBO. The part of the book that I was most fascinated with was the story of Lyuskya and her husband, firefighter Vaskya. She was pregnant when this happened and wouldn't leave her husband's side in the hospital. In the book it details how he was...I suppose melting away would be the best summary. She took care of him until he finally passed on and she wasn't harmed at all because the fetus absorbed all the radiation. I was excited to have seen their story in the docuseries. And here they were again in this documentary, except not only was there video of them with voiceover from Lyuskya but years later she came back home and it's all recorded. From what I've read it's stilly highly radioactive inside enclosed places so it might not have been a great idea if that's true, but an amazing watch nevertheless.
Of course that isn't the only interesting part of this. Real video of the citizens evacuating Pripyat, workers doing their suicide mission of keeping the world from being destroyed and the abnormalities of the offspring of people and animals are to name a few.
The docuseries went into more detail of the trial but this goes through that with little detail to give room for more detailed (but not long enough to be boring) information beyond that which I found interesting.
There are comments about skipping this if you've seen the docuseries but if you have seen that and find it interesting I strongly suggest watching this as well. You'll just have to deal with reading subtitles if you aren't fluent in Russian.
The only thing I was disappointed about was the lack of mention about them turning the carnival rides on and letting people outside to enjoy distraction while getting ready to send them off instead of making them stay inside. The Ferris wheel is an icon and it rusting away was shown quickly in the long abandoned footage of Pripyat but I find it hard to believe that with so many things recorded there was nothing on people enjoying the rides.
The Mentalist (2008)
I loved the show but...
It irks the hell out of me every time the cops have their pistols out and they're being held close to their faces with their elbows bent. It's perfecting minor things that makes a show or movie that much better. There are also some things in episodes or the way the law is run that are just as bogus, but this consistent inaccuracy sometimes makes it cringe worthy.
Is It Cake? (2022)
Needs some tweaking to be a good show
I'm into art and would not be watching this show if I wasn't wowed by the idea of turning cakes into replicas of random objects. It has a few flaws that need work for those who aren't wowed by seeing what they're able to do.
First, so many people are hating on the goofy host but are fine with the artists who are even goofier? The host fits in just fine unless you want to make the contestants behave professionally as well.
Second, as many have pointed out, the first person who won (also far more annoying than the host) blatantly cheated and everyone was like, "Okay, cool."
Third, there was favoritism. I don't know if it's because he's older, looks "boring" or aside from his baking skills doesn't stand out, but the host was blatantly rude to him at times. In general the quirkier the person the more positive attention they receive.
Fourth, when people are deciding whether or not something is real or cake they are way too far from the items to be able to tell. I'm not saying they should be able to be within an inch away, but maybe cut the distance in half.
Fifth, when people are tied on tricking the judges it then goes by the best tasting cake, which has its flaws due to different tastes. Therefore the contestants should have to make the same flavor cake so there can be an accurate judgement on which is best.
Hopefully they make a second season and fix the flaws when doing so.
Dexter: New Blood (2021)
I love Dexter but...
First and biggest gripe: Harrison is now in his late teens when he's supposed to be twelve. If they wanted to have an older character play him they should have had the series set in the future or wait to do the show until Harrison's character is in his late teens. Imagine having a twelve year old kid that you haven't seen in years and someone who looks to be at least seventeen comes up and says "Hey, I'm your kid!" No suspicion? If they wanted someone in that age bracket to fit the character then they should have had Cody's character find Dexter because this actor looks closer in age to Cody than to Harrison.
2. Is it too much to ask for accuracy? Dexter sells firearms but thinks an AR-15 rifle has "Way more firepower than anything you need hunting around here." That is a very good rifle to use for hunting and a quick google search would have educated them. You know which hunting rifle is going to do more damage? A simple 12 gauge. Furthermore, anyone in that business who has a customer swinging a knife around like a toy is going to refuse to sell to them. Maybe asking for accuracy is asking too much though.
3. "Oh no, what do I do with the body?!" And he chooses to dump it in a public lake where people do ice fishing. Not a good idea.
4. Speaking of bad ideas, collecting blood trophies to hide is a bad idea.
After Truth: Disinformation and the Cost of Fake News (2020)
Ruined what could have been a great documentary
I was excited to watch this when I saw the title. It should be common knowledge by now that the media is legally allowed to lie, yet people blindly believe what they want while scoffing at what they don't sneakily getting away with dishonesty. I was looking forward to a documentary without favoritism that actually informed people and instead it basically accuses Fox News and Facebook of causing all the problems in the United States.
Class Action Park (2020)
Loved it
This would have been a 10 if that Chris guy wasn't interviewed as much as he was. He was melodramatic and rambled on to the point where he seemed a little out there. Anyway, I'd heard so many stories about "Accident" Park but it closed down when I was too young to go there. It always made me wish it had stayed open so I could have experienced it, too. So seeing clips from the park and stories of the rides was great and despite some dark parts there were countless times when this had me laughing.
Are You Afraid of the Dark? (2019)
Grateful for the reboot
I don't know how actual kids think of this because the reviews are filled with those of us who grew up on the original but it looks like there are enough of us appreciating it to keep it going. There are enough comparisons between the two so I'm just going to add that only three episodes aren't enough.
Stranger Things: Chapter Six: E Pluribus Unum (2019)
Very disappointed...
There is way too much violence in this episode. To make matters worse, the characters are using inanimate objects to beat people nearly to death. Children watch this show and seeing violence like this will make them want to bash people in the face with fire extinguishers, stab people in the back with scissors, etc.
Just kidding. The scenes where adults are smoking cigarettes is far worse. If the children watching this are going to spend time in juvenile detention for bashing people's faces in with inanimate objects they better not be addicted to cigarettes.
Game of Thrones: The Last of the Starks (2019)
Horrible episode
Hopefully the other episodes aren't horrible like this one. Worst of the series.
The only good thing about it is Brienne finally got laid by the man she's been hot for the entire series so I'm happy for her.
Seeing Arya and The Hound traveling together again was nice, too.
As everyone else is, I'm very disappointed that Jon abandoned Ghost and didn't even say goodbye to him. WTF is up with that?
The invincible dragons (minus the Night King) are suddenly super vulnerable and now there's only one left, which sucks.
Dany is starting to look like she's following her father's steps. Meanwhile the poor girl saved the world fighting with Jon and losing most of her army while everyone partying was ignoring her and basically giving him all the credit as she sits alone grieving her loss.
Jon couldn't keep his mouth shut about being heir to the thrown and now there's already a plot to get rid of Dany so he can rule. Once again, she really got screwed over. The stupidest part of all is she's now planning on wiping out everyone now that she's livid and this could have been done easily before her army was depleted. It would have been better if they switched it, made that war as easy to deplete as it should have been with the entire army and made the war with the Night King last longer.
Game of Thrones: The Long Night (2019)
So many complaints...
In my opinion, the only downfall to this episode was the lighting should have been better. BUT there is an easy remedy for that. Just increase the brightness of your television and the characters will no longer be shadows in the dark.
I saw a complaint of WTF was with Bran and the Night King staring at each other. Obviously they were battling each other with their minds.
And worst of all, complaining about Arya being the one to save the day. She's a lethal assassin so it should not have been a surprise, or at the very least not a disappointment. The majority thought it would be Jon, so the twist was good.
13 Reasons Why (2017)
A show about the mentally ill
A lot of reviews mention Hannah's character being melodramatic and far fetched but people kill themselves for less reasons than being harassed the way she was on a regular basis. My biggest issue is Clay. His character should be on medication with the way he stares off into space fantasizing about things that aren't happening all the time.
