Jurassic World Dominion (2022)
Mel Brooks Called It
In Spaceballs, Mel Brooks refers to the future sequel as "Space Balls 2: The Quest for More Money". That could easily be the subtitle for this Jurassic sequel. It's not smart, it's not subtle, but it is expensive. I'm wishing I had waited until it was free.
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Part I (2022)
Horrible. Just horrible.
McGregor is good, the music is good. The rest is awful and completely stinks, mostly of Disney executive meddling. I mean, Flea plays a villain in the first episode- yes that Flea. Michael Balzary himself, the bass player for Red Hot Chili Peppers, is now a Star Wars villain.
Hard pass.
All Is Lost (2013)
Everything happens for a reason...
And sometimes that reason is "because you're stupid and make bad decisions".
Given the lack of character development, we're left to guess if Redford is playing either a laughably incompetent sailor or a naive-yet-resilient yachtsman who has gotten in over his head.
Other reviewers have pointed out missed opportunities to bring real depth to Our Man, and as such, I was left with my initial questions of whether this was an allegorical tale of a man battling the inevitable rigors of aging being slowly erased by a song apathy for the outcome he faces.
A lot can be said for Redford's acting and the filmmaking, but it just wasn't enough to overcome the lack of storytelling inherent to the project.
The Book of Boba Fett (2021)
Saturday-morning-cartoons Star Wars
The most unintentionally hilarious show. It feels like watching a Star Wars show produced by a disgruntled Power Rangers producer.
Let's put it this way- when my wife called the Sand People's animal a Dogigator, I knew where this was headed. The fight scene in the town had me rolling.
Vader warned Fett: "No disintegrations." I guess that didn't apply to his reputation as the galaxy's baddest badass, 'cause it's basically unrecoverable now. 🤷
I believe I now know how all of Star Wars must look to someone who hates the franchise.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
Formulaic popcorn action movie
This is a pretty straightforward action movie- there aren't many surprises in the way of drama or storyline. There are some quotable lines though, and J. K. Simmons earns a new 'forever' nickname.
The monsters are gross and appropriately dangerous, and the visual effects are good.
It seems like the film has one or two too many acts, but if they're going to pay for it to be in there, why cut it, amiright? 😉 Let's put it this way- at the establishing shot of one scene my wife asked: "Is this how Water World starts?" Maybe. But I liked this a little better.
