American Manhunt: The Boston Marathon Bombing (2023)
Good doc but some questionable interviewees
So I'll start by sharing that the documentary coverage of this tragic event was well done. They did a great job of capturing the horror and trauma of the victims. The viewer is able to really get inside the emptions and shock felt by those present and those impacted by what happened. My heart truly goes out to the victims of this horrible act of terrorism. Another positive is the coverage of the investigation and manhunt for the perpetrators. I thought they did an excellent job of capturing this thing from the perspective of those in law enforcement. But I will say that the choices of some of the other commentary were just horrible. One prime example is the investigative journalist (Phillip Martin). I'm sorry, but this guy was just a joke. Every single thing he said was sharply slanted against law enforcement. He was so painfully transparent in his hate for law enforcement, with nothing but sharp criticism for every single thing they did. The law enforcement officials were tasked with such an incredibly difficult job in this scenario. You can't blame the police because a bomber is shooting at them. Are they not supposed to shoot back? Wasn't it their primary job to bring in the perpetrators and stop them from taking any more acts of terror? If they hadn't caught these guys, who knows what they'd have done next. The investigative journalist obviously had no clue at all about what it's like to be taking fire and putting your life on the line to stop a terrorist. They also interviewed one of the friends of the younger bomber, and he was angered when they finally caught him because they thought he might be dead. How inconceivably insensitive to the victims of these guys' horrible act! Anyway, these views really bothered me and completely turned me off whenever these interviewees opened their mouths. Other than that, it was a good ducumentary about this situation.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
So overhyped but what a waste
I know it's a cliche, but seriously, that's over 2 hours of flashy crummy weirdness that I'll never get back. I think something is wrong with Hollywood when they try to sell us on such an oddball movie being worthy of winning awards.
I won't include any spoilers to ruin it for those brave enough to still give this one a shot. But I will say that it just fails to deliver on all of the hype that has followed this movie. I certainly followed the plot and all of the ensuing twists and turns. But it was just too high on the weird scale, and not enough grounding to make it truly enjoyable. My apologies to others who really loved this, but I just didn't get it, and I'd encourage anyone else considering this to just take a pass. Sorry.
Don't Look Up (2021)
What a waste of a couple hours
I don't know why so many top notch actors signed on to this project. But what a colossal fail. This was bad on such a large scale. The plot was marginal, the script was crummy, and the story just didn't deliver. The only thing this movie has going for it was decent cast. This movie acted like it wanted to be a spoof and a farce. Unfortunately there just wasn't much in the way of cleverness or creativity with this movie. It was so completely ridiculous that it just wound up falling flat on its face. There wasn't any cohesion in the plot. It just chaotically moved from one scene to the next. I just wish I hadn't wasted the time on this one.
The Count of Monte Cristo (2002)
So incredibly good
This is such a fantastic rendition of this story. It was well acted, great cinematography, true to the story - just very well done. This is one that will endure for a long time.
Regardless of the viewer's movie genre preferences, this is a story that will appeal to all kinds of audiences. It is a story of redemption, of overcoming life obstacles, of betrayal and what happens to the betrayer and the betrayed, of being true to oneself, of righting wrongs, and of good overcoming evil.
And the cherry on top of this great story is how it all plays out. I won't spoil it in this review, but there are a few juicy surprises along the way that leave the viewer a bit speachless. If you're looking for a great classic tale that's been done to perfection, look no further.
Jim Caviezel was nothing but genius in this one. Another fantastic performance to add to his stellar resume. This is definitely not one to be missed folks.
A League of Their Own (2022)
Just horrible and inauthentic
This was a great opportunity to do a remake of a very fun historical period movie. I was so looking forward to it because it was a series and everything. But it just fell so flat. It was just so inauthentic to the period. Yes I know, it's "based" on a true story, so they didn't have to stick 100% to history... But let's at least be in the same ballpark! This series just left the viewers wanting. The actual story is about women in sports, gender roles (fighting against previous stereotypes), the history of what was happening in our country at the time, and of course baseball. But all of that represented just 10% of this series' time/story. The other 90% was about lgbtq relationships. That's fine to have shows about that, but the representation in this series wasn't even near true to form for the time period. You can't just make believe and try to tell the audience things were somehow different. You don't get to rewrite history. Sorry, but this just isn't close to reality. Sorry, you pretty much lied to the audience. Sorry, but this was just such an utter waste of time.
