How the West Was Won (1962)
Too Big To Be True
The story or stories contained in this panorama of westward expansion are broad and entertaining and if this review was written 30, 40, or even 50 years ago it may have been a 7 or 8 but with the passage of time it gets better and deserves a TEN. The inclusion of so many of this country's great screen stars makes it a well spent 3 hours. The task to tell the story of such a broad period of time with so many characters would have been mass confusion without these stars. The other interesting point would be the main star.... Debbie Reynolds and Spencer Tracy. Reynolds holds the story together through her presence from beginning to end and Tracy's narration are enjoyable. The Cinnerama effects are somewhat lost on a TV screen but still entertaining.
Lonesome Dove (1989)
11
Everyone has a right to an opinion and you can tell a lot about a person by their opinions. I just question anyone who rates Lonesome Dove lower than an a 10. I saw the mini series before I read the book. A very faithful adaptation. Most great movie have a great score. Lonesome Dove gets a 10 here as well. Basil Polodoris provides the glue. I don't care how it is classified. Movie. TV movie. Mini series. It is THE best.
Brian's Song (1971)
All American movie
In 1975 I was a Battery Commander in the 82nd Airborne. Every trooper in the 16000 man Division was required to see Brian's Song. It took about a week. We marched to the theater as a unit at assigned times. My 1st Sgt was a tough Black man. We sat together. At the end of the movie I noticed he was crying. I elbowed him. He looked at me, a White Captain and said with a smile on his face, "Sir, if you tell anyone, I'll kill you". We both cracked up. Great movie.
Darby's Rangers (1958)
Inspiring
If you don't want to watch the movie, Google, last scene Darby's Rangers. As an 11 year old seeing this movie, this last scene stayed with me. 12 years later I earned my Tab. Silly? Maybe, but it still inspires me.
