The Gospel (2005)
Just Another Reason Why Church and Movies DO NOT Mix
I'm not going to tell you how good or bad this movie is. I'm just going to tell you how some things in this movie do not work. Let's take the really bad script which was just a horrible excuse for anything passing for creativity. This was by far the most predictable story I could have a imagine. But, oh there is a but, it does grab you in two areas. The death of the mother and the father. These are the only times. What I really did not get though from the death of the mother, is why the son was so mad at his father. It seems he didn't know his mother was sick. Heck, no one knew. We saw her healthy. So how was his father suppose to know? Why get angry at a man for doing what he always does? He didn't know she was sick and you didn't either...someone was drinking too much holy water while writing that part. That really lacked common sense by all counts.
Now let's get to the dialogue...ummm...not much happening. If anything, it really wasn't that convincing. The words flowed like peanut butter through tar. The actors, though gifted, were not convincing. But that really wasn't their fault. Let's blame the writers...and I do. David and Rain are suppose to really be into each other but you really don't get that because the only dialogue that we really hear is sarcasm and frankness. So where is this longing and the love jones? Lastly, the music. There is nothing wrong with the music because it is great....BUT...(I brought up that but again) why on God's green earth would you play the actual CDs of the songs in the movie? Ummm...that was the worst idea ever. I know that someone thought that that shouldn't make a difference, but when you hear the offbeat of the CD that isn't keeping up with the clapping track...you have a problem.
Nothing about this movie was original. I'm sorry but this was a Lifetime movie at best and should have never been sent to the theaters. And saying that is saying a lot. But you will enjoy it for the great music, the actors, and Gospel music icons. Nothing else actually matters in this movie.
Date Movie (2006)
Ummm...HUH?
I have to say that I'm someone that enjoys watching movies. I'm not a TV person, so I rent a lot of movies. I'm so glad that this movie was free. If I had to pay money for this, I would have seriously protested my money back. Because I got to tell you, I have never, ever, ever, ever, ever experience anything so ridiculously tack less. Let's put a bunch of idiotic scenes in one movie and call it "comedy". I hate to say this, but I'm starting to lose respect for Hollywood. I mean, was this really that funny to someone in the editing room? Come on. Next time those writers have a thought, they should seriously let it pass. If you haven't seen this movie, then you need to seriously thank yourself. Man, I'm starting to think that my books are all I have left.
Their Eyes Were Watching God (2005)
Halle Berry once again disappoints me and there had to be better way of casting this movie.
I'm sorry. I know that I'm going to get my head bitten off, but Halle Berry is not as great of an actress that everyone wants her to be. I have been extremely disappointed for years with Halle's performances. In this movie, there was no exception. It seems that if there is a sex scene, that is when we see her act her best. Spoken parts just seem not to be her strong suit. Michael Ealy is generally a powerful actor in movies he is in. But I was not feeling Tea Cake at all. It has always been said that: "The book is always better than the movie." And this is true, but sometimes the movie can be as effective as the book it is portraying. But this movie was highly disappointing. I'm a black college student and I read this book my freshmen year in college. I was moved by this wonderful piece of art and excited when they said that there was going to be a movie. While watching the movie, I was shaking my head and thinking of better characters to play in this movie. And I can name plenty. It might be a good movie to watch, if you are a Halle Berry fan. If you aren't really a fan, don't bother.
