Deep Sea (2023)

Visually stunning masterpiece with a deep storyline
23 September 2023
This is a film that on the surface looks like a storyline that borrows from "Spirited Away", and delves into the theme of fantasy, but once you cross a few thresholds of the movie you will likely start to realise that it is not so simple.

The visuals are absolutely stunning, I think they are even better than a lot of the famous studios out there like Studio Ghilbi, because of how the liquid threads and light speckles were portrayed, and there is a very advanced level of artistry in there, even though some parts of it look quite close to Spirited Away scenes. But rest assured that most of it is on its own, and the storyline is far deeper as well.

Without giving spoilers, I would like to say that this is a very tearjerking movie, especially near the end, and I like how they connected various parts of the "fantasy" back to real life, and suddenly some things made sense. Some other things have to be understood on hindsight, or from a second watch onwards, like a good book.

The storyline, while being fantastic and quite coherent by the end of the movie, made me confused as I was watching the front of it. There were so many things not explained, but the storyline goes rushing along new ideas and plotlines, thus it diminished the understanding of what was going on a little. Luckily, most of the early to mid movie scenes centered on still light-hearted themes,so thinking about the plotline was not that necessary. The connection between the early/mid to the back was done a bit abruptly though, so the transition could have been done better.

The ending of the film left me in deep thoughts about my life, and I start to wonder if I am in similar situations at time, extrapolated and not literally of course. Like a fine wine, this movie will be better as time passes and I understand the true essence of this movie. But for a first viewing and immediate review, this movie is one of my favourite already.

Strays (2023)

A way overused cliche in an unusual setting
21 August 2023
Yes, the overarching feature is talking dogs, which is usually filled with themes of heartwarming tales and tear-jerking moments.

Replace those with dirty jokes and P****-jerking moments and you get Strays.

Seeing as how the team who made this film did Ted, yeah one can expect some pretty mature stuff. It' just that the story plot is really cliched and boring at a lot of junctures. A lot of the jokes seem very typical, especially when it comes to alcohol, 'on a high' and sex jokes.

Also, there were quite a lot of moments where the heartwarming moments and inspirational speeches were quite cheesy, it is sort of copy and paste from many movies and putting them together. Kinda like Scary Movie, but more of plotlines and so on, and with talking dogs.

In conclusion, ok for a comedy film, but kinda forced for a full feature film, the plotlines stretch pretty thin.

Initially very bombastic, but mellowed out, in the end it was pretty good
29 July 2023
I have to say, this is one of the movies where I initially facepalmed quite often in the first 20-30 minutes or so because it seemed so weird, awkward and simply hard to watch. It's not just how Jennifer Lawrence's character is supposed to be, it is about the male lead's reactions as well. There were so many weird reactions in order to continue with the story instead of real-life reactions where a person will simply walk away... or even more normally... call the police.

The initial plot was also strange, everything seems to go right for the female lead generally despite her getting-jailed-worthy kind of acts.

But the later part of the movie was more natural and normal, and has twists that helped the story move along nicely. Eventually, it became kind of cliched but still have outrageous and funny moments.

Overall, it is a good movie since after the initial part, the chemistry between the leads was very well on point and it was pretty wholesome.

Joy Ride (2023)

Tries to be funny while exploring some sensitive topics
29 July 2023
First of all, on the surface, this film seems to be one of those "trips with my sisters/ brothers, and everything that can go wrong with it", btu along the way there are lots of plot lines, jokes, stereotypes and other sensitive topics being thrown in.

One of the main overlying sensitive topics is seemingly on the Americans' sort of unhinged vulgar and sex-driven behavior, and on the other hand how conservative the Chinese are, and how the characters in the movie, the ABCs (American-Born Chinese) behave after growing up in the American culture. Suffice to say it seemed too one-sided and heavy-handed to make sense, but luckily it is spread throughout the movie, while between ridiculous scenes.

Luckily, the cast for the show is pretty solid, there are some jokes that make sense, and the movie is uplifted by trending topics such as the bonds between family and friends (partially helped by recent popular movies showcasing Asian culture such as The Legend of Shang Chi and Everything Everywhere All At Once).

Overall, most of the jokes fell flat so as a comedy movie, I would rate it a 2/10, but overall it's a 6/10 because of some of the other things being mixed in, because in the end, it is more of a heartwarming movie than it is a funny one, even if it looks kinda forced at times.

Uncharted (2022)

Unfunny, cliched and predictable
28 February 2022
Screenplay tries too hard to insert humour that it becomes awkward.

Cliched treasure hunting and the usual roundabout presentation, except with a lot less suspense and a lot more "plot twists" which make little sense. Little truly heart-racing moments, most of it is simply just plot armor, coincidence and 'teleportation'.

Predictable after a while because the same tricks get used over and over again to lengthen the movie. And that last 'moral of the movie' thing is a bit too forced, come on, who wrote this thing?

Actors were too stiff, doesn't seem like there's a lot of camaraderie and there were a few plot holes here and there.

On the upside, some of the action scenes were pretty good. I mean, at least a few minutes... Or only a few minutes lol.

Best movie I have watched in a while
2 January 2022
Amazing storytelling, kinda cliche plot, amazing acting, and most importantly, excellent presentation of it all.

Action movies are famously bad at explaining various plots, be it how some things happen, how some scenes seem to inexplicitly changed to something drastically different, plot holes and so on, but Shang-Chi is probably one of the best in terms of both emotions and action, in the Marvel series.

Being an Asian, and especially Chinese-centric film, it is not surprising to find asian values being incorporated inside the movie. What's surprising though, is how a lot of the movie is actually in the Chinese language. Granted, non-english speaking viewers will not be able to grasp the full meaning of some of the phrases used, a case of lost in translation, and some might even find the rampant use of Mandarin off-putting for a global audience, most of who probably do not know Mandarin. And due to some political sensitivities, no less.

But outside of any prejudice or language barriers, this movie is indeed amazing in its own right. The acting of most if not all of the characters inside were really excellent, especially the facial expressions and the form of the martial arts, a lot of which seem to be referenced off tai chi.

The movie does have flaws, like the use of a foreign language for a mostly English-speaking global audience, or some explanations lacking, which is partly covered by the end credits, but the way it set up the interactions between characters and the plotlines is really masterful.

One of a kind, especially given today's sensitiveness on political correctness.

Don't Look Up (2021)

This is terrible
1 January 2022
For a movie that seems to be about scientific accuracy (99.78% to be exact, wow), it sure isn't scientific. Or realistic.

If you are someone who likes showbiz, and tons of scandalous stuff, yea this is a good show. Otherwise.... well... I have no idea what I'm watching really.

Character development was really a mess. The main characters especially, I'm not sure what is going on, they seem to have some rapid character changes. And far too much was on the over-reactions of .... everyone.

I think the point of some characters is to take a dig at some of the real life people, but... it's awfully ridiculous because... of some reactions by various people, and unfortunately, quite often the main characters. Come on.... it's just ridiculous.

The end credits were pretty lame as well, it's like some petty spite... this film really feels like it is trying to make a statement towards "certain" people, instead of really trying to tell a story.

Squid Game (2021– )
3/10
Shallow plot seemingly mimicked from other series
24 September 2021
Been an avid reader and viewer of several survival games, thriller and suspense series, this series is so predictable and draggy it really feels painful at some points. A 1 minute dialogue can get dragged to a 10 minutes dialogue with simple shouting, gesturing and lots of unnecessary activity.

Even though the premise is supposed to be on the real world, it is seriously not realistic. Too much plot armor, plot holes, character personality inconsistencies, unexplained events and so on. It's basically for people who like plot twists but do not think whether it is consistent or reasonable. But one thing holds true, plot armor is stronger in this series than most of the ludicrous manga/ anime/ K-drama/ movie etc. Etc. Series I have seen.

As I was browsing around, I found an article saying that the initial inspiration for Squid Game came from an unnamed comic book. Ahh, now I see why. It's basically a typical death survival game plot but heavily tweaked to reflect South Korean culture (unaccepting of foreigners, high household debt, the belief that women are inferior to men etc.

And that is why the storyline is inconsistent, choppy, have plenty of plot holes and plot armor in a lot of sections. Because the production crew does not let its characters tell a story, and there was much "micromanagement" in order to produce the desired results.

It could have been much better, but it's really boring from Episode 6 because it suddenly became incredibly inconsistent, which also made it incredibly predictable. This is where the "micromanagement" starts being especially prominent.

Overall, it started out great, but went downhill quickly, especially from episode 6.

Oh, and Squid Game is a clickbait title. I guess the production crew wanted to draw interest to traditional South Korean games eh? Maybe this film is partly an introduction of South Korean childhood games and social culture to the world. Even the North-South Korean dispute was touched upon, but more in the sense of the difficulties of the detractors.

In summary, too much agenda, too little plot.

Candyman (2021)

Horribly unimaginative
18 September 2021
Quite early on, the plot was blown, and after which, most of the plot was predictable. In fact, I really don't understand why the story was so convoluted and they like to use big words to say simple stuff.

It's a really simple plot really. Basically a urban legend version of Jack The Ripper, like Oujia Boards and the like.

But well, the plot holes, various inconsistencies, and lots of weird happenings are really not that great for this film to be honest.

I realise it's a sequel to a 1992 film, but I didn't watch the 1992 version, so I might be missing something. But hey, how many of us have watched the 1992 version?

Lacklustre storytelling and plot
5 September 2021
I was pretty surprised to see quite a few recognizable faces in this film and was setting up to be awed since I knew the acting levels of these actors/actresses, particularly Samuel L Jackson, Maggie Q and Michael Keaton.

However, the plot seems quite inconsistent and there was a jump of focus from here to there, with the main plot being something incredibly dumb. Notably the intro was pretty alright, but after the first part it just became.... very lacklustre. The antagonists seemed to be treading between nice and unnice, while the protagonists tread between naivety and stupidity.

Some great action for sure, but with the plot so bad, the acting seemed kind of weak as well. Not to mention the numerous camera cuts that made some scenes incredibly choppy.

This is really good, even among superhero flicks including Marvel's
5 September 2021
Having watched all installments of Avengers and various individual heroes' movies, I felt that The Suicide Squad (2021) is a fresh breath of air as it really deals with the imperfections and backstories in an extremely compelling way and in short-enough version.

The action was great too but unfortunately, could have been better. There seems to be insufficient display of some members' powers, and the focus was a bit overladen on humor. What's wrong with that? Simply the fact that some of the humor were kind of iffy, and some jokes seemed to be forced into the screen, and kinda out of place.

Overall this is a great film but gore and humor were overemphasized over action and excellent dialogues.

Overall quite emotionally coherent, though with unexplained and unrealistic events
29 August 2021
To avoid spoilers, I would say this is quite an emotional, though unrealistic rendition of an investigative theme. Basically a dad looking for ways to prove his daughter's innocence from a crime.

Initially I was thinking that it was a really really good film, but as the film progresses, it turned out that things are not what it seemed like and there are a few plot twists here and there.

However, Bill Baker has so much of "plot armor" that it is hard to take this film seriously. At some point in the film, it became kind of predictable what the ending will be.

Overall, the excellent acting by a few actors/actresses saved the day along with the director's skills. If not, this would be a mediocre to below average film.

A Quiet Place (2018)

The most boring, unexciting post-apocalyptic film I've ever seen
15 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I can't really critique this film without mentioning spoilers. It's pretty rate, so here it goes:

1. A child kept making mistakes that could have doomed the entire family. Once, twice, and still nobody holds her hand and kept her in sight. Funny thing, she makes a grave mistake, and only she gets taken. In other post-apocalyptic films, the entire cast is doomed. Interestingly, this happens later in the film, where the "monster(s)" does linger around. So yea. This is an obvious plothole. Not to mention, what defines as a "loud" sound.

2. A fully lighted, looking modern house with plenty of food. For a Day 400+ (1 year presumably, after the "event"), it does look surprisingly calm And newspapers are still. Oh, and yea, electricity and water are fully functioning.

3. A kerosene lamp in a fully electric-lighted area. Why? Just why?

4. Son does not want to go fishing and stuff, daughter wants to, but no, father insists. Family quarrel. Looks pretty normal. A bit too normal.

5. Daughter runs away from home without informing anyone, mother doesn't realise and goes into labour. And running away from home at that juncture and situation? Seriously?

Somehow the entire process is not loud enough to alert the monster(s). Even a baby's crying. Oh wow.

6. A bunch of stuff happened, all with a lot of noise generated, but somehow there is only one monster running around. What is this, the film doesn't have enough budget to make more than one detailed monster? If there was only one in the vicinity, wouldn't it be easy enough to travel a bit away, make a radio or something, and just draw the monster away? Why use human screams, and other accidental noises to draw danger to onself?

7. I really have to say this, but some of the sounds from the device the girl is using is way too loud and high pitched for me. Not sure what other people think, but it nearly busted my eardrums.

8. There are a lot of inconsistencies in the movie, one of which is that if sound is the only factor, then why is the river not crawling with monsters?

Overall, this movie is really more of showing the life of what people with hearing impairments, with heavy reference to hearing aids and sign language, but adding a dose of excitement with the "monsters".

Bird box is really really so much better than this.

Black Widow (2021)
10/10
Great movie, it adds a lot of development to Black Widow as a character
12 July 2021
Black Widow has always been sort of a distant sidekick of the Avenger Team, seeing as how she and Hawkeye are the only ones without some extraordinary superpowers or technology. But Hawkeye has his special arrows which add a lot of utility, Black Widow was... more of a Hulk tamer.

In this film we can see how Black Widow softens the situation with "heart", albeit to sort of an exaggerated degree. Not to mention, some of the plot twists were overly-simplistic.

Regardless, the story progression, dialogue, action, special effects and so on are one of the best in recent times, even after I have watched recent blockbusters like F9, The Tomorrow War and The Hitman Wife's Bodyguard, which have plenty of great acting, special effects and overall content as well.

I would say this film redeems Black Widow as an Avenger.

Great movie for its genre, goes beyond action to deliver deeper values
10 July 2021
I've watched quite a few movies of this genre, the humans versus aliens type, and I gotta say, Chris Patt really portrays his role well.

The story plot is pretty interesting too, there were plenty of plot twists along the way, and aside from the plentiful action, there were heartwarming and enlightening moments.

In short, I would say that it is a pretty good movie, with the CG, acting, sound effects and overall quality. Definitely worth a watch if you are into this genre.

More than what it seems
10 July 2021
On the surface, it looks like another film with A-star actors and actresses being let down by a terrible plot.

But if you look beneath the surface, it actually is less of a action-comedy and more of a journey for the main characters to find themselves. There's a lot of character development and the characters remain pretty consistent, there's no weird sudden character changes, just bit by bit character development.

And this film looks like it has a lot of budget, given its action scenes, CG(?) and tons of assets being blown up or destroyed.

Last but not least, the acting in this film is fantastic, given its A-Star acting cast.

Heartwarming and touching... just don't take it too seriously
27 June 2021
Yep, I know it's a movie, and no one would want to watch a movie full of real-life pressures whatnot.

So yea, as a family film, it adequately captures the struggle of a single father, and the perseverance of one.

There's just... I don't know, the way he leaves things dangling, or did not face it straight on, and things get worse or... they just magically turn ok or better.

It's a tearjerker movie for sure, especially some parts :)

Luca (2021)
2/10
A beautiful film with a shallow plotline and undesirable behavior
25 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
"Risking your life for a Vespa?" should be.the title of this movie.

I mean come on, almost the entirety of the movie is based on a very shallow plotline to move the story, all other sub-plotlines pale in comparison. And that's really amazingly bad for a Pixar movie.

Luca is a very beautiful movie with a shallow plotline with a few bits of emotional scenes. One huge gripe I have with this movie is how it normalizes undesirable behavior, mainly bullying and negligence from adults, throughout the movie.

I think that one of the main points of the movie is right at the end of the movie.

Luca's mom: What he did today was amazing.

But we can't let him stay in this world.

Can we?

Luca's grandma Some people, they'll never never accept him.

But some will.

And he seems to know how to find the good ones.

This seems to be the driving point of this film, I just wished that they would have incorporated this into the spirit of the movie, instead of the in-film line of ""Risking your life for a Vespa?".

Which indeed, most of the movie showed that a Vespa is more important than family, safety, and even a friend who brought him to surface in the first place. The film is unrealistic with its characters' sudden and huge personality changes, even for a fantasy movie.

Amazingly unfunny and even maybe unsuitable for minors
13 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Watched this movie on TV, kinda shocked by the themes. Didn't watch the full show but just snippets, but even just minutes of this was enough to shock me terribly.

The opening scene was a tongue in cheek breaking fourth wall, of the main character asking the audience if they thought she (actually a he) was crazy, and defended herself (himself) using an obviously out of place video segment.

Another part is making fun of kidnapping, there's a kid flashing his middle fingers when pinching someone's nose and there are even jokes about sexual assault.

It's trying to be funny, serious and heart-warming, which isn't unsurprising for most movies. But sometimes it is all at the same time. This is tragic.

Personally, I would not let any minors I know watch this "family show", lest I need to spend hours to re-educate them about the seriousness of some elements.

Budget film of a thirsty woman finding her quench thirster
9 December 2019
This film actually started off pretty bad, I can't remember how much I rolled my eyes. It was such bad screenwriting it felt that some scenes were awkwardly inserted so that the movie reaches minimum length or something.

As the film goes on however, I noticed that the storyline progresses into somewhat an abstract form, with some focus, but not enough. It's like a camera going off focus then on focus, sometimes just confusing.

The part going into the climax and then the ending was the part that really saved this show. The content isn't exactly original, there are quite a few other films or dramas which have similar content, but the presentation is really good.

Right from the beginning until the end, the lead actress Emilia Kate really reminded me of Emma Stone, and her role in La La Land. There were some definite similarities between the 2 films as well. The other movie that this film reminds me of is The Birdman, given its abstract concepts and on-focus, off-focus style.

In short, Emilia Kate really shined in this show, her performance being much stronger than any other cast, and is probably why this film is a masterpiece, like how Emma Stone shaped La La Land.

Screenwriting however, leaves a lot to be desired for the earlier 70% of the film.

An interesting take on American businesses needing to be supported by China
21 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This is an interesting time, as there is currently a nationalist president and US-China Trade wars going on. And the mentalities of both the Americans and Chinese workers.

From what I can see, Fuyao's expectations were completely different from its executives, which led to the president and vice-president being taken out. But that is only after an invite for the executives to go to China to see their culture.

Near the beginning of the film, there were a lot of references to the GM factory in the past which was shuttered, about how pay is less than half of then, and the working environment much more severe. Also, the interesting thing about how the Chinese discuss in their own language while Americans discuss in English.

There is a clear bias in this film, while we see many strategic meetings of the Chinese on how to "guide" the American workers, we see very few meetings of the Americans discussing how to handle the Chinese.

Another interesting feature is the chairman Cao self-reflecting on his decision to open factories, and how he feels empty, and not knowing whether he is a sinner or not.

Ultimately, at the end of the day, through all the hypocritical and self-serving bias, there's a simple takeaway near the end of the film. Automation is going to take away jobs, no matter American or Chinese. In the film, the Chinese are shown to be significantly better and more hardworking than their American counterparts, but how can they win machines?

And also, USA needs to do more for its people, rather than having to let China "save" its people, all the while complaining about various rights. All the chants that the Worker Unions do, and all the people there, you got to wonder, are they really making themselves more attractive to employ or less? Spending time shouting slogans instead of trying to upskill themselves? Crying about how the current situation won't be like GM, a recurring scene in this film, is not going to bring back those times.

Enjoyable if taken with a pinch of salt (or a lot)
24 October 2019
From the beginning, it has been kind of confusing, maybe because I had forgotten what went on before this started. There were quite a few scenes where even Thor was confused about why some things are in certain ways but hey, it is just how it is right? Quite a lot of things were never explained clearly.

Besides, the thing about Hera seems like a side-story, she was never mentioned, and all of a sudden she is so amazing. Again, even Thor was surprised. And a lot of the concepts in this movie seem quite new as well.

Character development wise, it's just a bunch of strange happenings (imagine, Hulk was smiling and happy), plot armor and sudden power-ups. Well, if some of those stuff had proper explanations, it'd be good and all, but many were just "well just accept it", hence the pinch of salt needed. Loki is loki as usual, incomprehensible and a catalyst of chaos as usual.

In conclusion, either a movie marathon is needed to understand some of the stuff that happened, or basically just take it as a standalone movie but prepare popcorn... oops, I mean salt, to pinch while watching this film.

Smoke and mirrors
23 October 2019
Well this movie started out interestingly like one of those thrillers, a bit like Ocean's Eleven but with magic and hypnosis. However, the execution and the way the characters move are really strange at times, with no explanation. Like how does this person know a certain matter? Why does this person suddenly do that? How to a lot of questions?

Ironically, this movie is indeed what the premise is about, basically magic tricks. Smoke and mirrors. Deception but to entertain, as one guy in the movie indicated.

The greatest question though, is that if the mentalist is so amazing, why does he not simply use mass hypnosis on everyone? Or are all the "hypnosised" people stage actors? There is just so much plot holes and fantasy involved that even the supposed climaxes seem anti-climatic, some scenes were also incredibly predictable.

Great movie, love how John Wick can play teamwork well
21 October 2019
In Chapter 3, John Wick is starting to show signs of plot armor, and finally getting tiresome and cliched over how durable he is.

To be honest, the John Wick series has been great, excluding the last fighting part of the movie, I even thought Chapter 3 was better than Chapters 1 and 2. The issue is that there is a lot of action, too much action, and some fighting scenes were overdrawn such that it becomes boring, especially during the fighting scenes with the Japanese guys.

The plot is kinda thin as well, luckily the execution is still amazing, save for the last part of the movie. Dogs are still the highlight of this series (lol).

In conclusion, still the same old John Wick, but with less comedy and less the "John Wick is a man of will.... " lengendary quote and more of senseless fighting. But all in all, still very entertaining most of the time.

Exciting, old-school and funny
21 October 2019
I guess this is what Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol was trying to achieve if it focuses more on comedy. The plot is kinda overused, however, the execution and the focus on family ties makes this series heartwarming at some points.

The comedy resulting from two loggerheads helped to soften the serious atmosphere from the early scenes which reeks of Terminator.

To be honest, the stunts really amazed me, even though some of it is reminiscent of earlier F&F series. What amazed me was that this movie combines F&F with more spy-related themes such as Mission Impossible and 007, yet it is still quite refreshing, and that's saying a lot, given how stunts and plots are largely similar throughout these kinds of films.

In conclusion, lots of stunts and great family fun.
