Crawlspace (2012)
Great horror well executed
This film is your standard formula horror film but in a good way - it delivers. Featuring great performances mainly from Steven Weber it also boasts some really creative death scenes. People who are fans of home invasion horror films should really appreciate the film. Surprised this isn't rated a lot higher. It's highly entertaining. Passed my expectations for it. Highly recommended.
Abominable (2020)
Terrible sound, great effects.
I was really looking forward to watching this film but unfortunately the sound of the dialogue is very poor. Low volume dialogue really made it hard to engage with the film. In clear need of a colour grade shots go from bright to dark which leave the production down. The dialogue also seemed out of sync to me maybe a lot of post recording I don't know. The gore effects are very strong and the Yeti is quite good looking really. In conclusion very difficult to hear the dialogue and the film needed a colour grade. A bit of a set up possibly in another location would have bettered the viewing experience I think. It got boring rather quickly all being in the same place etc.
Never Hike in the Snow (2020)
Outstanding and superbly shot.
Never Hike in the Snow is an absolutely outstanding fan made Friday the 13th film that stands up there with any of the best Friday the 13th sequels. Incredible photography and special effects with a couple of Friday the 13th part 6 lead actors. I was blown away by this film my only complaint is that it's less than an hour would have loved it to have been longer! 10/10 for superb effort!
The Babysitter: Killer Queen (2020)
Strong start, weak long middle, good ending.
I loved the first 20 minutes of the film approximately. It was in keeping with the original style and there was some great comedic moments with an interesting set-up. When the horror and action started at the island it became very repetitive and boring in parts. The end was quite good I loved the last scene. Judah Lewis and the cast were fantastic and the soundtrack was great aswell. Unfortunately Act 2 of the film was quite a poor, repetitive showing. Even a road trip would have made the movie much stronger the one island location in the dark was just pretty dull and boring no interesting scenery or locations once that begun. Would love to see another installment with better story and less forced comedy scenes.
Boys in the Trees (2016)
Surprising gem of a movie!
'Boys in the Trees' is a surprisingly great Australian film with a cast of partly unknowns, a couple of the leads are in well known Netflix TV shows now but were unknown at the time of this film. The acting is fantastic and the location is quite easy on the eyes aswell. The film is set around Halloweeen and manages to create a really nice spooky atmosphere that borders somewhere between adult horror and teenage fantasy horror. It's a nice neat story the ending might be somewhat predictable but for others it's a great twist. Definitely well worth the watch - some great talent on view here! A strong 8/10 for me.
Child's Play (2019)
A brilliant re-imagining of the 80's classic
I was very apprehensive about going to see this film as a huge fan of the original 3 Child's Play films. In fairness to this remake it really stayed clear of rehashing the original which wasn't going to be bettered and instead went for a very fresh and different approach to the ''evil doll' brought home story. This film did a fantastic job of utilizing modern day smart technology to be the catalyst for the story and thus setting it apart from the 80's classic by making it a very different film. The execution is fantastic and surprisingly dark and gory for a horror movie in 2019 with so much toning down of horror and gore in the cinema like with IT 2017. Some very gruesome death scenes. Highly recommended a great reboot with some actual thought put into it instead of just another cash cow. 8/10.
The Night Flier (1997)
Underrated Stephen King horror
'Night Flier' is a very entertaining and at times quite horrific Stephen King adaptation. It has some great visual effects and manages to create a rather eerie atmosphere and builds dread quite effectively. I'm surprised you don't hear much about this horror film when it comes to talking Stephen King horror films. A great watch very well executed it's one of the more darker Stephen King horror films. 8/10.
The Boy (2016)
A modern horror classic.
'The Boy' is a superbly executed horror film with much to love. Incredible location for a horror film and a very interesting concept from a trailer that gives little away. 'The Boy' delivers on atmosphere and suspense aswell as constructing characters the audience will really like or dislike. I found it highly entertaining and quite original by far one of the greatest horror movies of the past 20 years. Delighted to see a sequel coming out for this modern classic! I'd recommend looking up as little about the film as you can if you haven't already watched it and go in with knowing as little as possible to avoid any obvious spoilers. 10/10 for 'The Boy.'
Beyond the Woods (2018)
Finally a top quality Irish horror film
Firstly, I had heard a bit about this movie coming out online a good while back. The trailer quite honestly didn't grab me but I felt there was some potential all the same so I had it on my watchlist. I loved the synopsis and as a big fan of cabin in the woods horror I had to give it a chance. I was taken in by this film in the first 15 minutes I would say with very natural performances, clearly of a higher standard than that of most low budget horror movies. The picture was particularly sharp and the sound crisp I really invested in the story. This film was great at building a sense of dread and suspense that kept advancing all the way to the third and final act. I absolutely loved the final act it really paid off for me and I think that's testament to the quality of acting, character development and some bloody good special effects I wasn't expecting. The edit of this film contributed greatly to a nice pace that the movie runs at aswell so the hour and 20 minutes or whatever it is really flew by. One of the most atmospheric horror films I've ever seen with very believable characters I really enjoyed. Top notch debut going straight into my horror collection.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017)
Gripping, outstanding film
I went in to this film with high expectations and they were exceeded almost instantly. Incredible performances from Sam Rockwell, Frances McDormand and Woody Harrelson. My only niggle was I would have loved a different ending without spoiling anything a different ending would have been so much more satisfying if one of the principal characters' arch really extended to full redemption rather than where it went. Couldn't recommend this film more to film fans anywhere. Film and storytelling at its best put simply.
1408 (2007)
Top Marks for 1408
I thought this was one of the best horror films i've ever seen!! It's brilliant the way the frights in the film are delivered without any suspense music leading up to it, so you really are taken by surprise! It's definitely one of John Cusack's best performances. The story is brilliant, and there's so many twists that aren't very predictable like most films. Top Marks!! I haven't seen a horror film in ages where i got so many frights like!! I felt like an idiot jumping up and down in my seat every five minutes!!:)Samuel L. Jackson, even though it's a small part, he delivers a great subtle performance as the hotel manager. For anyone who hasn't seen this, try to see it in the cinema before its gone!!
