Left me wondering what the point was
6 October 2023
A fabulous cast who were quite mesmerising but the film loses its way. The movie starts off very strong, a serial killer is on the loose, Rami Malik plays ambitious Jim Baxter who is on the tail of Jared Letos character, suspect Albert Sparma. Jared Leto brings Albert Sparma to life as a charismatic, clever nemesis who is tying the police up in knots. Denzel Washington comes into it as cop 'Deke' from elsewhere who was responsible for the death of an innocent person.

The movie goes from being the police pursuing a suspect, the investigation, with flashbacks of Deke's past, to Baxter getting het up and suddenly losing it and doing a similar thing to Deke. It was as if the directors had one story going, it was too long so they suddenly cut it off with this ending.

I felt the ending was very frustrating, not what I would consider realistic.

The Nun II (2023)

Good lord what a ride!!
26 September 2023
Woh, this is one rollercoaster ride of horror, suspense, trepidation and mind-blowing effects. A lot darker than the first instalment. Set in a boarding school, Valak has returned with another rampant reign of terror.

As an avid fan of The Conjuring, Insidious, Annabelle and The Nun franchises I was excited to watch The Nun II. Having avoided spoilers I had no idea what to expect. Sister Irene returns, as does Frenchman Maurice and they both steal the show with super strong performances. The setting is dark, creepy and atmospheric within a girls boarding school.

There is character development with Sister Irene, which ties in with this current instalments storyline. It was very satisfying to get to know her a bit more.

We see more of Valek in this one too, played by the phenomenal Bonnie Aarons, who is incredible and a horror icon.

After watching this movie I felt like I had been through a mangle. It is a horror fans delight. Fans of the franchises I mentioned earlier will be very happy and excited that there is a post-credit scene.

I highly recommend this movie but not for the faint-hearted!

So stress inducing!!!
2 August 2023
Wow! What a roller-coaster of emotion!

Having watched the INSISIOUS franchise from the very beginning, I was very excited for this final installment. With Patrick Wilson directing, I was keen to see what he produced.

I absolutely loved every minute of it. It is very dark, both in content and from a cinematography point of view. I loved how the camera constantly picked up on white shining bits in the eyes, in the gloom.

The story is set 9 years in the future. Josh and Dalten have been hypnotised to forget the events that happened in the year of the coma. However, memories are pushing they way through. Dalton is a beautiful young man, gone to uni to study art. He doesn't have a good relationship with his dad. Josh is struggling to cope with life because he has constant brain fog. They both start seeing things and begin to experience 'the further'.

Patrick Wilson manages to capture the true essence of fear, distress and confusion. He ramps things up as father and son begin to experience 'the further'. The trepidation is breathtaking, trying to keep watching when you know something is aboit to happen is a very adrenaline inducing plight!

Absolute cracking performances from Ty Simpkins and Patrick Wilson. Just a brilliant installment to the franchise.

Vivarium (2019)

Refreshingly different
26 July 2023
This has been on my watch list for a very long time. I was excited to see it on a streaming service yesterday. It was nothing like I expected, which in a way, is a good thing and in another, a little disappointing.

The small cast are incredibly engaging, and work well together. I found the way they were dressed oddly irking, which led me to wonder whether the clothes choices meant anything. Jesse and imogen played such a bland, mundane couple - is this whom Yonder targeted? Did anyone miss them?

I was expecting more families to be involved and found myself wondering what the point was of having all those houses, when they were empty. I was invested in the couples plight and was rooting for them.

Many reviews say that the film is too long, it's full of padding and should have been a short. I disagree. I was engaged throughout and it was enjoyable, weird and thought-provoking. It's not a happy movie, don't watch it for laughs.

Yes it would be nice to know more, but some of the best films leave you wishing for conclusions. I think Vivarium is a great discussion movie. It could simple be a presentation of parenting, the family unit. What a mundane existence it can be. Children being like aliens that we care for, they suck the life out of us and then we die?! Who knows! Whatever the tale it was telling I enjoyed it and I would watch it again.

In Fabric (2018)

Witches spinning webs maybe...
2 July 2023
This film reminded me very much of the Suspiria remake, where witches run a dance school to instil their dark magic into the fabric of the dance.

In Fabric is a cryptic film where a (what seems to be) old fashioned dress store is run by a peculiar array of characters, that may or may not be, witches.

It is a very stylised portrayal, where the use of character behaviour is emphasised and magnified. The dress store uses television advertisements to project images onto potential customers who are vulnerable to their charms. The staff in the store are like spiders spinning webs to capture flies. They are quite unnerving.

There is a sexual element to the film which is very crude and somewhat repulsive. It seems to link in with the store staff and somehow feeds them. The mannequins are featured in the plot as potential important elements as are the models in the catalogue.

I think that the victims are used to make new frocks so they are part of the fabric of the clothing, hence a cycle of dark entrapment for the forces that run the store.

A very interesting concept, I have read a few books with similar threads by authors such as Bentley Little and Graham Masterton.

I am unsure as to why it is labelled a horror/comedy because there didn't seem to be anything funny about the whole thing!!

Not my cup of tea but I'm very glad to have seen it and I'm sure it will play on in my mind for quite a while. It holds a strong cast, who were a pleasure to watch.

On my watch list for years!!
2 July 2023
This was on my watch list for years! I kept waiting for it to come out on dvd region 2, but it never did. Thank you Amazon Prime for having it available to rent.

It is immediately engaging, with a great cast who gel really well. There is not much back story, but this doesn't matter as the characters project a really outstanding presence and it is evident that they are all strong, defined people with their own agendas and roles in the movie.

The family dynamic is strong and quite beautiful, as they move into their new home things immediately begin to affect the dad. He is an artist, an attractive man with what appears to be a good soul. The previous owner, or occupier, of the house is deeply troubled and has murderous tendencies, which appear to stem from the house in the form of a muffled demonic voice. The only way he can mute the voice is by playing very loud rock music.

The family love rock music, which is a parallel not lost on the viewer.

The film portrays a kind of destiny in its deliverance. The family were drawn to the house for a reason, and that reason was to be part of the horror and its crescendo. The dad was a pawn of sorts, he was meant to be there, to stop the demonic reign of terror.

I really enjoyed this movie. No nudity or sex, just a great, supernatural horror, with a fantastic cast and excellent execution of a refreshingly original script.

Done before, many many times.
5 May 2023
This movie is nothing new, the same has been done so many times before and much better than this. The plot is slow and boring, nothing is unexpected or exciting. The cast don't give any kind of charisma or gel well. The use of Ralph Ineson's voice for the demon was very distracting and, because its so recognisable, had a negative effect on the believability while watching. The lack of originality was frustrating and I found it very difficult to engage in what was happening or even care.

On the positive side, Peter DeSouza-Feighoney is quite an incredible actor. He stole the show and, for me, was the only good thing to come out of it.

Renfield (2023)
8/10
I loved it!
3 May 2023
There have not been many films out that I've really enjoyed out lately and I wasn't expecting to enjoy Renfield, as horror comedy isn't my genre. However, I was blown away by how damn good it is.

The cast is a real quirky bunch who work perfectly together, they give a solid and quite mesmerising performance. The plot is not immediately obvious or predictable; it unfolds at a nice pace and is engaging. Renfield is a likeable character, Nicholas Hoult is a solid lead. There is lots of John Wick style hand to hand combat which I loved. The gore and blood flows nicely, awesome!

My favorite performance was Ben Schwartz; he reminded me of a Gangs of London gangster. How he held himself was very charismatic. Snorting a giant centipede was peak tier in my opinion.

A solid 8/10 from me, a very happy experience.

Absolute misery
13 April 2023
My goodness what an utterly miserable movie. A great cast, but just complete doom. Yes I know the subject matter is just that - but there is nothing in this film that is entertaining, enjoyable or even interesting.

I have to admit to be going through a difficult time currently and watching this film amused me because I thought, they were having an even worse time than me!!

It felt very sterile, bland, no depth. Almost cliché, predictable and irritating. The characters were unlikeable, whiny and unable to be any use to the disaster at hand.

I don't know what message the film was trying to deliver but, for me, it is a complete let down. I wouldn't recommend it.

Oh my lord!
14 February 2023
What an absolute cringe fest! I had my head under my jumper at times, I just couldn't bear to watch.

Brilliantly crafted, slow burn movie which shows you why not to visit people you dont know very well! I loved how the foreboding began early on but you had no idea why. The characters were portrayed perfectly, showing how the weak can be preyed upon and taken advantage of by the devious, dark side of the world. I think a second watch is a good idea to pick up on things you may have missed on first viewing.

There was an air of Midsommar to this movie. I think its the clever, insidious, creeping sensation that constantly bubbles just below the surface.

I loved it!

Surprisingly unnerving
11 February 2023
This has been on my watch list for ages, and I'd seen some positive reviews, so was keen to see what I thought.

It starts off as an obviously low budget movie but soon proves to be engaging, with a cast of interesting characters. The camera work is clever and gives a macabre edge to faces as they loom over Jennifer. All the characters, other than Jennifer, are oddballs and creepy. They are all very negative and quite unnerving.

Jennifer is pregnant and reluctantly moves, with her husband, back to their original home town to have their baby. Quickly things start to happen around Jennifer, the house appears to be haunted. No one believes her, everyone is pretty horrible to her.

I will say no more because of spoilers, but I was pleasantly surprised how the film turned out. If you want fast action, a clear grasp of whats happening and a resolution, then this may not be for you. But if you're a horror lover, give it a go!

Pearl (2022)

Had me riveted from the start
9 December 2022
Right from the beginning, with the 'Wizard of Oz' like intro, I was entranced. I felt Pearl was Dorothy, ready to be transported to her self-manifested dreams.

Mia Goth completely embraced Pearl, brought her to life like a Puppet who no longer needs their strings; she blew life into her. I can't really articulate how incredibly pointed her performance was, but it was dark, foreboding and razor sharp.

The suggestion of impending darkness was there from the beginning, however, it grew with such powerful, uncontrollable grace, that I felt strapped into the carriage of a rollercoaster destined to crash.

The final throws of the film had me covering my eyes and cringing, with some of the best gratuitous violence and macabre scenes that have graced our screens for some time.

Horror at its absolute best, in my opinion.

Dolls (1986)
4/10
Bloody annoying character
18 October 2022
Okay it's 1986, the concept and execution are good. Puppet Master it is not - but the dolls and toys are still cool.

A family travelling end up staying at this mansion along with some other quirky, annoying guests. The characters are all extremely irritating, I mean they really made me want to claw my ears off They deserve everything they get.

However, the elderly couple who live there are great.

The effects are as you would expect from the 80s but still fun and better than some.

Not one for me, I found it more irritating than enjoyable. I couldn't watch it again. If you're a fan of creepy, killer dolls then I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

What the hell happened hear?
18 October 2022
What an absolute crapfest. Did no-one watch this movie back and think 'that's not very good is it?'. Why did they even bother to make it?

First off the beginning is practically the same as the first movie, except its a couple of older people. Utterly predictable and disappointingly clichéd.

The characters, especially Chase, are absolutely terrible! The acting is an insult to B movies let alone what you would expect from the Creeper franchise. They were annoying and not believable in the slightest.

There was no direction, the effects were terrible and it was just so boring. What a complete waste, I'm gutted!

Oooh!! A rampant thrill ride!
18 October 2022
I really enjoyed this action packed thriller!

Husband and wife are on their way, on a road trip, to drop the wife off at her parents house. They are having marital difficulties and the wife wants some space.

They stop to get gas, quite near to their destination, and wife goes into the gas station to get some water. However, as the husband waits for her, she doesn't return to the car. He frantically hunts around for her, asks the cashier in the service station and then calls the police.

Things progress far too slowly for the husbands liking and I really felt his frustration!! He begins to take matters into his own hands and does so with gusto.

This is a 'take your brain out and enjoy' movie. Gerard Bulter is quite the powerhouse, he really steals the show. I love the mismatch of dodgy characters and how the husband ends up right in the middle of hell!

An enjoyable horror/sci-fi
18 October 2022
The movie begins with (what appears to be) a meteorite coming down in the woods.

We then meet Harry and Ruth, a couple, who are coming to the woods for a camping and hiking break. Ruth does not seem keen and appears to be carrying substantial trauma. Harry is quite unsympathetic and pushes Ruth to accompany him even though she seems very nervous and reluctant.

During the few days Ruth does appear distant and anxious, Harry really doesn't help matters. Ruth wanders off to go pee and finds a cave. On further investigation she finds a pool of iridescent blue gloop.

Next thing we see Ruth luring Harry to his death!

The setting and claustrophobic atmosphere is gripping. Miriam steals the show completely. Harry's character is annoying and, to me, their relationship just didn't seem real. Unless it was supposed to be unbalanced and with Harry being a selfish arse. That confused me a bit. However it's still a great new horror/sci-fi.

Nice British Indie
18 October 2022
I went in with absolutely no preconceived or expectations with this movie, and was pleasantly surprised. Obviously a low budget flick but with good effects, settings and concepts. The cast were all pretty good, with chemistry and believable. I especially liked the guy who was letting out the filming location and Norman of course.

The film went in a completely unpredictable direction which was refreshing, my interest was held all the way through.

If you enjoy Indie horror/thriller movies then give it a go. I enjoyed it, and to be honest it's better than a lot of high budget new movies that have come out recently.

Enjoyable, but nothing new here
13 October 2022
I am a huge fan of the franchise so was very excited to see this movie. However, I was a little disappointed.

The build up is very very slow. From Riley getting the box onwards it is like torture just waiting for something to happen (with the cenobites or Pinhead). I mean that's why we're here isn't it? To see the other Realm, Pinhead and their minions?

I felt, at the beginning, there was too much focus on Riley, her relationships and addiction. All the sex etc I think it was trying too much to be homeage to the 80s style. I would have liked that to have been left behind and a new vibe to come forward. It's boring, we've seen it all before.

The house, the house is cool!! It's like a Borg cube (Star Trek). I loved that idea/concept.

Pinhead is good, however does not have the presence Ray Bradbury had. And the Cenobites didn't have the best vibe. They were all very polished and not very effective in their tasks.

I did enjoy the film, there as a few new things, like the house but the deaths were very much as we've seen before. The tickery and lure was the same.

I hope we get more installments where new things will be explored.

Vesper (2022)
3/10
Depressing, dark and boring
13 October 2022
A depressing dystopian future. Vesper and her father live a filthy, poor and desperate life. I just thought 'what is the point of being alive in such awful suffering?'. Yes Hope. However the film did not offer any Hope to be honest. Just a cold, dirty existence, scrapping around for anything to improve a dire situation and finding nothing.

Yes the acting is great, the setting and the effects are interesting; however there is no back story or depiction of how we got here. Vespers uncle is a creepy, horrible man.

There is so much more to this story than what we were shown. It is so slow and could have been so much more. I personally did not enjoy it at all.

Stigmata (1999)

A hidden gem
1 September 2022
I re-watched this recently and was actually very surprised how good it is. The effects are particularly impressive.

An atheist hairdresser is sent a gift bundle from her mother, who is travelling, and begins suffering from Stigmata. The events trigger interest from the Catholic Church who send a priest to investigate.

The cast give a strong, solid performance. The plot is interesting and engaging, with character history and development intertwined.

It is a story of faith, God and the Church, which do not necessarily sit together well. Corruption always finds a way to sully what is right.

The atheist and the priest walk the path together to work out what is happening and why.

Nope (2022)

Refreshingly brilliant
1 September 2022
My daughter and I watched this movie together; my daughter hated it - I loved it.

Set out on a horse training ranch, in the scorching heat, a strange event occurs, and causes the death of the father, who runs the ranch. His son OJ and daughter Emerald are left to continue his work.

Another eeire occurrence, one of their horses is taken. OJ notices a cloud in the sky that doesn't move.

Hence forth a ufo hunt, a gaggle of characters who are so different, yet work incredibly well together, that they draw you in and engage you into their plight. An experience that, if you put yourselves in their shoes, is so terrifying that most of us would flee.

With Jordan Peeles clever use of carnivalesque settings and interesting sub-plots we are treated to a visual feast.

The tense, foreboding atmosphere is thrilling and builds as the ranch crew develop and execute their plans.

As I said at the start, this film caused intense different views in our home. I loved it, and was completely engaged and excited. John is exceptional in his role as OJ and, in my opinion, steals the show. How he uses his eyes, to portray what he is feeling, and what he is going to do, is incredible.

Not for me
23 August 2022
I didn't enjoy this film. It's very slow and I found the characters quite frustrating. It didn't make sense to me that the little girl wasn't told more of the truth. It just made the whole thing very frustrating and repetitive. I didn't take to the characters or care about them at all.

Not for me but give it a go!

I enjoyed it
23 August 2022
This movie has gotten a lot of negative reviews but I really enjoyed it.

The family go to a yard sale at a creepy looking home, the little girl sees a Teddy bear and wants to buy it, the house owner gives it to her for free. You then cut to inside the house, and see what appears to be a mother and her child, covered in sores and mucus, they are communicating by clicks.

The teddy bear is infested with an insect that uses the little girl to do its bidding.

I loved the quirky cast, they worked well together. Although the posters for the movie are a bit misleading, it is still a very good film. You don't see much of the creature and what you do see isn't great by way of realism. However it's still very well produced and effective horror.

I definitely recommend.

Very atmospheric and foreboding
20 August 2022
Stellan Skarsgard is mesmerising as Father Lankester Merrin in Exorcist: The Beginning. With a perfect slow burn, we learn about Father Merrin's life and struggles with his faith.

We see him in Cairo, at an excavation site. The site pre-dates Christianity and the subject of the dig is a relic of a demon. The local tribesmen flee and refuse to continue to participate in the dig.

Disturbing occurrences begin to happen and Father Merrin is drawn into a terrifying situation where he finds he needs his faith to fight an ancient evil.

A very eerie, skin-crawling and frightening film. This is my favourite of The Exorcist franchise.

Absolute Corker!!
20 August 2022
I absolutely love this film! The atmosphere, the build up; the cast and crew put their all into this. If you watch the making of this film you will see how harrowing it was to make, and I think this really shows in the final result.

The chemistry between the cast works so well and the build up to Eric finding AND READING (!!) from the book is intense. Immediately poor Mia is in trouble. The scenes with her in the woods are brutal and terrifying. From that moment on the film accelerates into a mass of graphic violence and body horror. A horror lovers dream.
