Eat Locals (2017)
Surprisingly fun
Did not expect much from Eat Locals but it all just about holds together.
Good cast, moved at a reasonable pace and had a few twists.
Not the deepest story ever but entertaining. If you fancy an action vampire film you could do a lot worse.
The VVitch: A New-England Folktale (2015)
How does this get such high reviews?
Looks good, sounds great but really dull and does not make much sense!
A Dark Song (2016)
Surprisingly good!
Had never heard of this film but really liked it. Low budget I guess but that worked in its favour, it did not need any special effects or jump scares to be a good supernatural thriller. It is a subtle, thoughtful tale about loss, revenge and just wanting peace! You need to watch it carefully and quietly.
Catherine Walker and Steve Oram are excellent.
Threads (1984)
Won't forget this in a hurry!
I don't think there is much I can add to the excellent reviews posted about Threads through the years.
I had never seen it before, I seem to be one of the few 80's Kids not forced to watch this at school and I'm quite glad of that!
It is truly terrifying and harrowing as everyone has said. I am tempted to get my 18 and 14 year old sons to watch it to make it absolutely clear with stark clarity what Nuclear War means for the planet. They might think it looks dated if they did watch it but I believe this drama is a timeless classic.
Not sure I can watch Threads again but it's not something I will forget in a hurry and it made me realise how damn lucky I am to live in a relatively stable country in this fragile world.
The Secret Agent (2016)
Dark, bleak, brooding but really good!
Finished watching the last episode last night and what a bleak ending!
I though the whole cast were fantastic, Toby Jones can do little wrong for me, (Detectorists is just about my favourite comedy ever), and he played the hapless, hopeless, desperate and cowardly Verloc brilliantly. Stephen Graham was wonderful in the role of the sympathetic but hard-nosed Inspector Heat. Vicky McClure as the loyal, trusting Winnie was brilliant too. I don't care about who did what accent or whether it was accurate to Joseph Conrad's book, it just worked for me. Yes it's very dark and has an extremely bleak ending but I found this refreshing. There is no happy ending where the good guys win or a moral tale that leaves you feeling good about yourself! It's a gritty, realistic story of desperate people trying to survive and succeed in a terrible situation. Loved it.
Multi-Coloured Swap Shop (1976)
Wonder of many colours!
I feel I should defend the Multi-Coloured Swap Shop as I feel Theo was a little unfair on it! This was a time of innocence, a time of getting exited when a friend owned a Soda-Stream! You mentioned about a more 'cynical' time now and isn't it good that it wasn't such a cynical time, many kids loved the 'MCSS', myself and my younger brother included. Yes you could watch the mindless Tiswas but for the more erudite and intelligent child, the MCSS offered a lot more! And could anything be funnier than Keith Chegwin, answer me that?! Not forgetting of course, the gorgeous Maggie Philbin and the extremely interesting John Craven. But honestly, I loved MCSS and would love to see it again! Takes me back to Saturday mornings, watching MCSS till 12 and then turning over to watch the footy on ITV presented by Dickie Davies, followed by the wrestling, Big Daddy against Giant Haystacks. It might be fashionable to say you preferred Tiswas but MCSS offered a lot more!
Long live Noel Edmonds!
