Reviews
Tau (2018)
Almost average. If you are picky about what movies you watch, skip. If you're open to lots of stuff or really like this genre, give it a shot.Spoilers not until end of review
As some others have pointed out, this movie doesn't do a whole lot new in terms of AI stuff. This movie was kind of like that old DIsney movie, Smart House, except kind of a horror movie and then mix in some typical creepy billionaire kidnapper / slave stuff. If you're into this genre, give it a watch. I only watched it because I got home from watching Upgrade (which I would definitely recommend), turned on Netflix, and this was the main feature.
Overall, I would say this movie was like a kid's roller-coaster at a really good theme park. You have hopes for it going in, it and it seems like it might be interesting. Things actually start to happen pretty quickly, but it doesn't feel that exciting. It starts out decent actually, and you think that if the rest of the film lives up to the pacing and action in the beginning then it could be all right. But then it makes a few decisions that might seem exciting to someone whose never ridden a good roller-coaster, or seen a good AI sci-fi movie, but are ultimately kind of bland. Some kinda stupid plot points too but whatever I'm not about to nitpick the computer science behind this. It actually has some interesting elements, like the cleaning robot that's remote controlled by the in-house AI. Development between Julia and Tau had some good moments but ultimately dropped the ball.
SPOILERS:
Shortly after our main character is kidnapped, the other two slaves are murdered by a stereotypical big business billionaire that's actually a psychopath who thinks he's in the right because he's doing research on technology for the greater good. I think killing off the only other humans in the house was a mistake, it made the rest of the movie boring.
For a long time, it felt like, our heroine had nothing to do except be bored and occasionally engage in banter with her captor. Tau is the sentient AI that controls the house and remote controls a robot that can clean up any kind of mess. Dust, spills, stains, and blood from the people it can totally massacre. Julia begins talking with Tau about the outside and starts teaching him things, but has to do it in secret before Alex gets home. In return, he gives her more information and freedom while Alex is away. If you've ever played Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, its almost exactly like the dynamic between Tec and Princess Peach during the interludes between chapters. Actually now that I think about it its almost like they took that part of the game and brought it into our world and then made a movie about it.
If they kept the other characters alive, or killed just one of them, that could be an interesting dynamic between Julia and the other human about if they could trust Tau and eventually if they could trust each other. The other one might think about telling Alex about what's going with Julia and Tau and there could be more conflict there. Literally the only reason that Tau and Julia started to get caught is because she left a fingerprint on Alex's tablet and he got mad that Tau didn't clean it up. That's when one of the dumbest plot devices comes into play. Alex "tortures" Tau by hitting a button a remote and deletes parts of his code and later his memories. Tau is screaming in pain "Alex, please! Stop! I'll be good! I'll clean more! Please!!! OWwwwwwWw!" The ending sucked too.
When I started writing this review I had my rating at a 6 out of 10. A bit further in I changed it to a 5/10. Now that I'm actually finished and fleshed out my thoughts even more, it's at a 4/10.
The Misandrists (2017)
Not too long, not great, not for the faint of heart.
Plot wise, this movie was kinda eh and it was kinda slow moving. Honestly aside from the funny political satire stuff, its not a super great movie. The acting kinda sucked but that made it more funny tbh. I guess you have to appreciate the political humor and not get offended lol.
Basically if you think a political satire called "The Misandrists" sounds funny, well then you'll probably get at least some laughs out of it. It's not gonna win any awards, but it might be a fan favorite in some radical political circles.
Don't take it too seriously. Some of these other reviews are talking about how ugly the women are... but who cares? If you're going to be turned away from a movie because the cast is unattractive, then this movie is not for you.
