Old (2021)
Old is a new idea
But that's all it is. As one can tell by the one-word title, this is a high concept movie. What you wouldn't know without watching it is what ideas are explored. So watch it for the concept and enjoy the "what-if" scenarios but don't expect great acting or dialogue. And as with any M Night movie you should enjoy the ending.
Arkansas (2020)
Straight up good movie
I was surprised to see who directed this. It's got a great cast including John Malkovich and I love Vince Vaughn in tough guy rolls. I really have nothing bad to say about this movie. I saw it described on rotten tomatoes as "derivative". How? I've never seen a movie about organized crime in the south and this cast really brings it to life.
How I Met Your Father (2022)
Just not funny
As anyone with realistic expectations would guess, it's not like HIMYM. They made sure to have what every PC sitcom does these days: white people at it's center, surrounded closely by many different ethnicity and a gay person. That seems to take precedence over comedy. The producers probably went in thinking, "Okay, we need an Asian lesbian." As opposed to thinking, "Okay, we need a funny, likable female character." But in the end, whether you check all the inclusion boxes or not, what your viewers want is funny, likable character. That's not here.
Oh and the script is just not funny.
The Nightingale (2018)
Hard to watch
This film is brutal. The British soldiers depicted would be right at home in a Nazi camp. Is it a good movie? Yeah. Did I enjoy watching it? I can't say that I did. I don't know if the British soldiers in colonial Australia were as evil as this movie depicts. Is it exaggerated? It's hard to imagine such ubiquitous antisocialism/psychopathy, but then again, like I said...there was Nazism. I found, as I often do, the revenge was not enough. I wanted these men to suffer more. The one element I did enjoy was the main character's anger. Her anger was her strength. All in all, worth watching but if you have a soul it will hurt to watch.
The White Orchid (2018)
Yikes
Bad acting. Terribly corny dialogue. The smugness of the main character makes her unlikable. She starts off shy and then unconvincingly becomes very self-satisfied. I like dynamic characters in movies but this just didn't work. The corny dialogue between two smug characters towards the end was just dreadful. You shouldn't be able to so clearly see what a movie is trying to be. It's sort of like talking to someone who is clearly trying to be cool.
Bob's Burgers: Driving Big Dummy (2021)
Too much Teddy
Solid episode but man can Teddy be annoying. I found myself getting frustrated for Bob. Good enough B story but nothing amazing. I would call this a middle of the pack episode but if you enjoy the characters (and I'm sure you do if you're watching this show) then their personalities will carry it for you.
