Terra Estrangeira (1995)
Reality
Someone reviewed this movie as a "waste of time" because he/she was expecting the "beautiful scenery of Brazil and Portugal" but then everything looked "washed out" or gloomy, or something to that effect. I believe this person missed the entire part of the film. This is reality. The point of this movie is to show that life is not, indeed, ideal, and to show what people go through in their lives for family, love, and survival. A young man leaves his slum in Sao Paolo, Brazil, to go to Portugal to visit his mother's home country after her death. He discovers that not everything is free, and that Brazilians are looked down upon by native people from Portugal. He eventually finds a life, a love, but the story does not end as expected and this is not a "fairy tale" story. The part that got me most was the ending song, "Zeca Bailero (Honey Baby)" by Gal Costa. It fit so well with the movie; especially the ending.
Closer (2004)
'real love'
One of the most realistic love stories I have ever seen. I can't say I'd call it a 'romantic comedy', although it has to do with romance and has plenty of good laughs in it. But the story does not follow that of a romantic comedy. It shows how love really is. I absolutely can't stand romantic comedies but this movie has become one of my favorites. I just love movies that make you think. And this story was so realistic- I watched it with my boyfriend and even he liked it. I could really relate to the plot. It shows that love is not perfect, the 'real' aspects of relationships, and that things don't always turn out to be what you want them to be. There are so many great lines in the movie that have stuck in my head. I absolutely loved Natalie Portman in this movie and can completely relate to her character.
Ruang rak noi nid mahasan (2003)
brilliant!
As I said, this is a brilliant movie. Too bad they only have it on PAL format, so I can't play it on an American DVD player, but I've watched it repeatedly on my laptop. The story is so coincidental and unexpected. It has a bit of 'magical' affect in it which I think added to how surreal the movie did seem. I guess it's a Drama or a Love Story, but it's not a comedy-it's the type of movie that makes you think, which are my favorite kinds of movies. I don't know what more to say about this movie other than that people should definitely see it. The only reason I bought it is because I saw the trailer at an independent film theater that has screenings of indie films once a week, and I missed the screening, but the movie looked so interesting that I just went ahead and bought off eBay...and that was no mistake. Watch the trailer, because it might not appeal to everyone. But I love how the cover of the DVD pictures with captions that say "to die?", "to be lonely?", "to be loved?", and "to be alone?" These are things many people go through during life and think. I could definitely relate. I guess the movie is kind of depressing but I love movies like that because they make a lasting impression.
