In the first two episodes, it became clear that this adaptation was going to deviate from the original material. While they altered the reasons behind certain events, I was initially okay with it, understanding that adapting an anime to a live medium would inevitably involve some changes. I was prepared to be a forgiving viewer and give the adaptation some leeway.
However, then episode three hit, and oh my gawd, Genkai, what did they do to you? The creators opted to skip character-building arcs, and by the end of this episode, it was evident that the direction of the show was treating the source material as a mere suggestion.
I mean, what's the point of an adaptation if it strips away all the character development, group dynamics, humor, and stories that define Yu Yu Hakusho? And most egregious of all, they completely destroyed the Dark Tournament arc, which is arguably the best Yu Yu Hakusho has to offer.
It took the anime 40 episodes to execute this. Remember all the cool demon groups, amazing fighting moments and intricate story telling? Well, you get none of that here. They skip it all and rush to the final group fight. What a travesty.
This cannot be overstated-it's an absolute travesty. Who was this show even for? Certainly not for the fans.
The silver lining is that the actors delivered solid performances, and some action sequences were quite impressive. Despite these positives, the omission of key elements from the original series left a significant void in the adaptation.
