Sorjonen (2016)
compelling film noir style
About half way through the 3 seasons of this Finnish offering of unvarrnished crime investigation. The pretense is often or usually over the top, but that not what's truly interesting. The protagonist is flawed and ocd in his pursuit. He has problems relating to every character, including his family. And yet, the acting is so effective you begin to grasp how difficult his life must be as he tries to balance his job and personal problems, knowing that for him it's largely undoable. The character of Lena is an ironic twist on the hard, top cop who breaks the rules. She is the perfect counterbalance to Sorjoren's inward perspective. It's a seesaw act worth watching.
Sicilian Ghost Story (2017)
ghost story no, moving yes
Not for those looking for fast action and thrills. moody and compelling story telling and acting. metaphorical as it dissolves into nothingness. this one crept up to me and really took hold. how a mere sliver of a real story can be powerfully brought to the screen.
Hotel Mumbai (2018)
real life horror strikes without warning
An unforgettable depiction of the terrorist attack on the Taj Hotel in Mumbai. Graphic violence that never seems voyeuristic or misplaced. Yes, it's scary and intense beyond description but real horror is thus. You can feel it seeping off the screen like blood oozing from an open wound. No attempt at outsized, absurdist heroism. Just people trying desperately to survive.
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
entertaining and sad.
Must see for Freddie Mercury and Queen fans but also for anyone interested in a blend of biopic and music genres.
