Mayfair Witches (2023)
I liked it
I'm seeing so many negative reviews here that I feel compelled to give mine. I was a huge Anne Rice fan, and read most of her books. Both "Interview with the Vampire" and this series differ from the books they're adapted from in many ways. If you can look past that and realize they're inspired by them only, and not exactly the same, I think you'll find they're both good series on their own. I particularly felt that way about "Mayfair Witches." I enjoyed it and thought it was well done. It was filmed in a lush, magical sort of way that evoked the subject matter and how I feel about New Orleans. I say to give it a try and see what you think. Just don't expect it to be exactly like the book, and I think you might feel differently-at least I did.
2:22 (2017)
Disappointing
I was especially disappointed in this movie because the general ideas-patterns, order of the universe, fate etc, could have been taken in a fascinating direction with smarter writing. As it was, I felt it was nonsensical and inconsistent. For example everything and everyone was driven by fate except for that one instance at the end of the movie when the main character suddenly had a moment of free will. Also they implied that since it took 30 years for the light of an exploding star to reach earth, everything happened in a similar way to an event 30 years ago. There's nothing about that idea that makes any sense. A lot of the movie was like that. One of the other reviews said it had potential but it wasn't realized. That's exactly how I feel and why I was disappointed. It could have been so much better.
Against the Ice (2022)
Worth Watching
I'm usually fairly stingy when giving my star ratings, so my 7 star rating here is meant as a high rating when coming from me. I felt the events were mostly realistically portrayed which I appreciated since it's based on a true story. I think Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has a characteristic of likability that makes you root for him even if the characters he plays might normally be hard to side with (similar to Bryan Cranston), and that's helpful in this case. If you like exploration and survival stories this is definitely worth watching.
I Sold My Soul to Satan (2010)
Worth watching
When I started watching this, I assumed it would be as ridiculous as it sounds. I was surprised, however, that it was more intelligent and interesting than I had expected. This was due mainly to the subject of the film, and his occult guide. My impression was that the filmmakers themselves appeared to initially conceive of the film as a way to make fun of how superficial and self centered people in Hollywood are, but instead it became a more serious film about the occult and human nature. It's definitely worth watching.
