Kevin failed.

It's unfortunate that the viewer nowadays is almost forced to watch these Marvel shows to understand the plot of the Marvel universe.

Otherwise, I would surely have avoided awful shows like She-Hulk.

Due to an accident, Bruce's cousin Jen's blood infused with that of the Hulk and consequently started experiencing Hulk-like powers. Yeah, convenient that this hasn't happened before.

Bruce wants to teach her the way of being a Hulk but there is no need: She is already perfect in controlling her powers and even more powerful than the Hulk himself. Yeah, how convenient.

She goes back to her life as a lawyer and encounters different problems mostly concerning discrimination, some related to feminism.

The plotline and Jen's character are already ridiculous but so are the insertions the show makes when Jen starts talking to the camera, i.e. The audience. In the finale she jumps out of Netflix to speak with the makers of the show to just delete the climax and let everything be magically resolved.

Frankly, it was interesting seeing Marvel admitting in all these "mistakes" they've been making in their shows and frankly the climax also wasn't interesting anyhow but this was nonetheless another huge mistake of Marvel.

All in all, this was a more-or-less disconnected slice-of-life show that didn't have anything to offer.

Crazy! Promote the Asians!
30 September 2022
It's absurd that I've only now seen this movie as an Asian European. It feels like this movie should be general knowledge for Western Asians - though only because of its Asian cast and not because of the value of its story.

I was reminded by Simu Liu's memoir about this movie. He described how basically every Asian American actor auditioned for this movie. So I needed to see it.

Rachel Chu is an Asian American economics professor whose mother is an immigrant and whose father is dead. Her boyfriend is the handsome Singaporean Nick Young. For a family wedding, Nick invites Rachel back to Singapore also with the intent to introduce her to the family. There is a surprise: Nick has never once told Rachel that he is kind of famous. He comes from the richest family in Singapore and everyone on the island knows him. Rachel is a little overwhelmed with all of this crazy rich stuff happening at once while also being involved in several issues - from the jealous girls to the mother and grandma who would just not approve of a foreigner - an American - like her. How should she, a poor immigrant's child ever convince Nick's family of her? It's basically not possible.

Michelle Yeoh, the actress of the mother, really made me feel uncomfortable here. I guess that makes her a great actress, the audience is supposed to despise her character! From time to time it was difficult to watch. Of course, the story is only adapted from the book (which I have not read) but I feel that it is improvable. There was such a huge focus on the wedding with quite a scenic part in the movie about the wedding but in the end, the wedding itself was quite irrelevant. Astrid's issues with her boyfriend having an affair was an interesting point once again revealing the problems coming with that obscene amount of money but it was so underdeveloped that I also deem it a little redundant. Nick... didn't really have any character traits. For a second main character we barely saw him and his only character trait is that he loves Rachel but is a bit naive about what his mother is capable of.

By the way, I don't quite understand why Nick's mom disapproves of Rachel when she herself already wasn't the first choice. What was the significance of that? Shouldn't she be more empathetic then?

To have such an all-Asian cast is great though, of course. Basically, all the well-known Asian actors appear in this movie and they are just all such good actors. We definitely need more Asian representation in the West.

Nonetheless, I still feel that it was a little cliche? For example this "Ni Che Le Ma?" that the grandma said, I feel like this was only put in as a cliche. I'm also not sure if this is the correct movie to demand such a large Asian cast. Of course, they managed to demonstrate some facets of Asian culture, but really not so many. In particular, there were basically no Asian American issues portrayed but it would have been such a huge opportunity with the Asian American cast.

I really really hope there will be many more works like these in the future. Please, let us promote Western Asians in our society.

A little too childish
11 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The huge success of Thor's last movie was due to the great comedic scenes it provided which at least made me laugh and smile. It's a no-brainer to continue with this concept.

Unfortunately, it was way too overdone in this movie.

The movie's main enemy is a guy who has been let down by the Gods who then went on a mission to extinguish the Gods of this universe. In the same vain, we actually see some of this in action and for example see a ridiculously arrogant and unlikable Zeus in this movie.

The number of existing Gods is suddenly blown wide open in this movie, it was never before clear that there are so many of them and so many redundant ones. Though Gods not necessarily as good characters is a concept that Marvel has already been using in the series.

Another topic is that of love where Thor meets Jane Foster again who semi-miraculously becomes another Thor. She however has stage four cancer making a real reunion between her and Thor ultimately impossible. Thor is torn between his feelings for Jane and also between his feeling for his old hammer Mjölnir which is mostly for comedic effect.

But the comedy is really a bit too much and often distracts from the actual action. There is also way too much asspull: All these random Gods, the realm of Eternity, Jane Foster suddenly fixing Mjölnir, the list just goes on and on. Where were all these things during the Thanos era? Instead of chasing all of these infinity stones, Thanos could just have opened the bifrost and his wish would be granted.

So yeah, unfortunately quite disconnected and childish. But at least we got to see Thor again, who remains a fun character.

Ms. Marvel (2022)

Not marvelous
19 August 2022
Ms. Marvel is a story about race. Not only do we encounter the Pakistani family in the US and the (rather ordinary) cultural and racial themes but we also deal with interdimensional races and the same problems of not belonging.

I appreciated the race topic and was able to relate to it a lot being also the son of an immigrant, though it was rather stereotypical and nothing out of the ordinary.

The plot itself however was quite mundane. The villains feel weak and unmotivated and so does the entire backstory. Of course, there needed to be a fight with the love interest but the high point was resolved too quickly and randomly. We don't even really know why these special forces were there and Kamala's powers feel random. There are weird location and time jumps and one wonders what happened in between.

The show is called Ms. Marvel but up till now there are few connections to Captain Marvel. Sure, she likes Captain Marvel and her name means Marvel but other than that it was such a clichee ending to have the father tell her that she's Ms. Marvel.

I'm pretty disappointed and was quite bored watching this show.

A kangaroo disaster
27 July 2022
We all know that books are better than their respective filmed version. There is rarely a movie which is more enjoyable than the counterpart book. But from the likes of Marc Uwe-Kling - who even joked about making a movie out of this book in the very book - I definitely expected more.

This movie takes a number of random scenes from the books and somehow plasters them together into a more-or-less, but really rather less, coherent story. There is a more prominent focus on Jörg Dwigs and the nazis who were more of a real threat than in the book and the story tried to have a focus on some AfD-based jokes. But the focus was really not that funny, most such jokes already done thousands of times and the storyline just a mess. Even the actors didn't seem convincing and the best parts of the book were left out.

All in all unfortunately very disappointing and unexpected for such a fantastic book series. What a pity.

Immersion into the multiverse
25 July 2022
Marvel is diving into the multiverse storyline. Dreams are actually lives of your other universes, you exist in so many other universes where you're different but somehow also the same.

The central girl, america, in the story appears to be a multiversal unique girl who has the power to warp between universes but who cannot control her power. Due to this extraordinary ability, people are hunting her for her power, as every problem is said to have a solution in some universe.

Doctor Strange and the wizards from Kamar-Taj do have some experience with the multiverse but this is not just a question of wizardry. Indeed, witchcraft also plays hand in hand and Wanda became the Scarlet Witch - totally messed up from her Westview experience - wanting to capture the girl to finally live a peaceful life with her children. An unequal battle commences with a travel between universes being the byproduct.

It was a fine movie though these books were a little too much of a plot device to me and some decisions of the characters seemed questionable. Certain fights were too uneven (like the Illuminati were just this easily outclassed by the Scarlet Witch) and america was quite a bland character.

The jokes were good from time to time but nothing extraordinary. Yeah, I did expect a little more from this movie but it was definitely not bad.

Moon Knight (2022)
3/10
Superhero with mental issues
18 May 2022
The moon is beautiful and knights can be cool. But the Moon Knight has nothing of each. It is a confusing and boring show for which I needed two months to get through.

There are Egyptian Gods who somehow need avatars to act on Earth. Some of them want to punish the evil but there are philosophical dilemmas here. Ammit wants to eliminate those who will do evil in the future which results in the killing of a lot of people.

Our main guy wants to prevent this but he has problems with himself, getting blackouts and changing his character through and through. Somehow, he can also manifest abilities which is when he becomes the so-called Moon Knight. It'll turn out that these will apparently all be related to some mental illness with childhood issues but the entire revelation just seems contrived and unappealing.

The fighting is absolutely boring and it is not really clear what abilities the heroes even have. The villains are boring as well and Ammit has done basically nothing even though she was so feared upon.

Oh, and there is a talking female hippopotamus.

Yeah, nothing of the story ever remotely peaked my interest and I was a little confused by the attempted revelations in the last two episodes. The finale was very weak, there was a lot of build-up, but it was building up towards nothing. Bummer.

Spontaneous (II) (2020)

Spontaneous non-explosive watch
26 April 2022
Imagine if your best friend just literally exploded in front of your face. Actually. Don't. It's kinda awful.

That's the main gist of this story. From some day on, students in a certain high school class start exploding, so they just vanish, i.e. Become nothingness. Our characters have to deal with the horrors and unpredictability of this and inevitably make a few decisions that they otherwise would have not.

These explosions are supposed to be seen metaphorically. Life is hard, everything can happen at any time. Life can end at any time, s*** happens. So the really, you have to start living and enjoying your life. Do dare to take some chances that you might have been too afraid to. Ask out the girl you have a crush on, go to this event that you're still unsure of, finally start learning this thing that you're procrastinating on. Life is short and life is unpredictable. Begin before it's too late.

While the metaphor is good (albeit cliche), I was somehow pretty bored by this movie. It somehow took me about two weeks to finish. Really, it was just going nowhere, we all knew that the lover was eventually going to explode and we all knew that these lead to some sort of desperation. They basically didn't try to make any explanations about the explosions and many actions seem so unrealistic. Would parents really allow their children to still go to school after this? Would Dylan's mom really talk like that? Etc etc. It just didn't feel right.

Secrets. Again.
1 April 2022
This show is quite reminiscent of the book/show "One of us is lying".

As in that show, everyone in a high school seems to have certain secrets that they need to keep at all cost - be it just the typical boyfriend who is sleeping with another girl, sexual orientation questions or even the faked death of certain people. A hacker got hold of all these information and actively threatens people with giving price of these. The main goal of the hacker appears to be to introduce more transparency to the community where people are fake and try to sell themselves as someone they're not. Though the true motive is probably the stereotypical guy trying to get a girl even though it's not too clear how or what he's trying to achieve.

I think they managed to keep the tension quite well and they portray an array of different personalities. The main character is quite likable (and so it's kind of unclear why she would be unpopular, as she is also quite pretty). There are some dramatic and brutal fight scenes and certain erratic party scenes. The way it was filmed was new to me but I probably don't like it too much. It seemed exactly that: erratic.

Certain aspects appear overdramatic. The police is missing and many problems appear overexaggerated. Yet, it remains a decent show.

One Of Us Is Lying (2021–2022)
8/10
High school murder mystery
28 March 2022
Everyone has secrets. I assume so do you. Usually, nobody wants these secrets to see the light of day but somehow many just do. Especially if there is a snoopy guy who posts your secrets on his weird app.

Well. This guy died during detention from an allergic reaction and there were just four other students around. Since everybody hated and feared him, they all had motive to hurt him. Was it murder? Or what exactly lies behind that? And what lies is everybody actually telling?...

I haven't read the boot yet but this show was pretty good! Seems like I'm into thrillers. It was never boring and they did a good job hiding who was really the culprit. The characters were all quite different from each other and added a lot of depth. They all went through quite a bit of character development and I enjoyed that. Their actors were obviously not teenagers but admittingly they were all pretty hot, lol. The ending was unexpected to me, especially with how it turned out.

How I Met Your Father (2022–2023)

How I met your show
22 March 2022
Season 1 - 5/10.

While I didn't really have high hopes, I was still intrigued. The concept of HIMYM was just super fun and you can be quite flexible with your story-telling, so perhaps HIMYF will also give us some interesting episodes.

Unfortunately, immediately in the first episode I realized that this is not it. The show just does not have the charm of its predecessor - there is no Barney, there is no Marshall&Lily, there is no Robin and there is no Ted. The new characters are rather bland and boring and definitely not legen-wait for it-dary. The story-telling is not creative and I find the narrator just annoying who also somehow appears in every episode in contrast to the original show. The jokes never managed to make me laugh and many feel rather forced.

The last episode was not bad, however. Especially the part when Robin appeared (which took me by surprise) was nostalgic and actually quite amusing. But so the best part of HIMYF remains HIMYM. This is not a successful spin-off.

When you're just out of ideas...
21 March 2022
The most generic movie I've ever seen.

Adam travels to the past with the objective to destroy the invention of time travel to prevent a dystopian future. Of course, something went wrong during the mission and of course he meets his younger self. Of course, his father plays a huge role in this project and yeah, the Adam Project is the time travel project. They give us some generic and meaningless CGI fights and some super generic phrases like that they want to destroy some mathematical formula at which I as a mathematician just shake my head.

Every part of the movie was predictable and generic and the humor didn't really cut it. It is really disappointing.

Room for interpretation but also for sleep
13 March 2022
Yeah, this movie definitely leaves quite some room for interpretation but can also be a snoozefest.

I watched it with a friend and could surely not have managed to watch it alone. The story is simple but can be powerful: A boy has almost lost it all and is living quite a difficult life. To top it all off, he loses his hand and half the movie follows a hand crawling his way back to his original owner. This has some metaphorical interpretations, sure.

The scene when he was about to lose his hand was well done but quite torturous. Just lose your freaking hand! And the music is really good.

I get that the movie leaves a lot of space for metaphorical interpretation, from the hand showing the helplessness of our protagonist to the idea that even with great loss, a lot of dreams are still possible.

Some people probably like this kind of stuff but I honestly was quite bored the entire movie. Metaphorical prowess, yes, but entertainment value, no.

Dark (2017–2020)
5/10
Time is a complicated concept
12 March 2022
Season 1 - 8/10.

Time really is complex. Do our space dimensions along with another dimension in time really form a 4-dimensional manifold? Can something like time travel then be possible? Stephen Hawking in one of his popular science books guesses that at least time travel into the past should not be possible due to certain famous paradoxes.

The German show Dark plays with these concepts and unavoidably gets into confusing and possibly self-contradicting territory.

Winden is a small town in which Germany's (fictional) first nuclear reactor was built, though there seems to be something mysterious about it. One day, a kid goes missing and we soon discover that he traveled 33 years into the past. There are investigations surrounding his disappearance and multiple people of the town discover certain facts about this incident...

Stranger Things copy? Well, yes and no. Of course, there are many similarities, there is no way denying this! We are living in the small town naturally without any crimes until a kid goes missing in the night. There is one guy in the police this all focuses on and there are some suspicious research facilities (nuclear reactor).

But on the other hand, the story is also quite different. This is a story about time and time travel after all. That really has nothing to do with stranger things. Up until now, it also doesn't seem to have that much to do with the name "Dark", so I'm still not quite convinced about this choice of the title.

For me, this was quite a suspenseful story and it's definitely interesting seeing how the different time concepts play out. On the other hand, it is also quite confusing. For one, I have a hard time remembering the faces and knowing who is who, especially after jumping between times. Plus, there are paradoxes inevitably, the guy who built the time machine even mentioned that himself. I'm not sure how I like it because an unsolved paradox simply doesn't make sense.

I think the main problem of the show for me is that there are no really likable characters so I cannot really get attached to any of them. This is quite unlike stranger things which has really cool characters.

But again, Dark is a completely different show and in itself very interesting for its time. It's great that the Germans actually managed to make a good show. Great and dark.

Season 2 - 6/10.

This will be controversial but honestly, that was kind of boring. Season 2 picks off where Season 1 ended but now we have even more timelines. There still aren't really likable characters (and some really despicable ones), but we are slowly understanding who these characters like Noah and Adam are.

But man, it feels like I watched 8 episodes of nothing. It feels like we always kind of know what will happen anyway, since we have seen or heard of the future perspective. It's as the characters say: Everything should happen as it has always happened.

What a stupid oxymoronic phrase btw. This shows again that time travel into the past simply doesn't work. But the characters repeating this over and over again went on my nerves and doesn't really make sense. I hope there will be some good explanation as to why they want everything to happen "as it always did".

The last scene was honestly by far the best scene in the show. What are we seeing here? The multiverse in Dark? It is surely the scene that makes me want to keep watching.

Season 3 - 3/10.

I really wanted to like this show but it has become such a snoozefest. They introduce a parallel world and spend an eternity on events that we've already almost seen one-to-one. The characters are always saying the same freaking phrases. I know that it's supposed to be a feature but it is just so boring.

Watching this feels like watching a recap for 8 hours. The idea is OK but 2 hours would have sufficed. Maybe then I wouldn't have been bored to death.

The ending explanations are also just some sorts of asspulls. So there is a third world. Why is Martha such an important character? What's with the nuclear reactors? Time stops for a second? What the heck does that even mean? Etc etc.

Experimenting with time travel into the past is a decent idea but the logic in this show just doesn't work and is boring to watch.

They didn't let the multitude of spider-man movies go to waste!
12 March 2022
The multiverse is a thing. At least in the Marvel universe.

In the last few months, I've watched all the preceding Spider-Man movies to be able to appreciate this piece better - and I'll be frank: I was not a huge fan. I was never the biggest spider-man fan and also did not enjoy Spider-Man 2 as much as many others did (it was one of the worst of the spider-man movies for me).

No Way Home, however, was quite pleasant.

You've probably all heard about the general plotline. Mysterio got Peter's name out into the open and accused him of being a vigilante and Peter's life has gone downhill from there. Out of desperation, he paid Dr. Strange a visit and made him cast a spell to change things. But the magic has gone awry and Spider-Man related characters from all universes soon started appearing.

Peter has his handful to deal with the nostalgic Spider-Man villains but also gets his fair share of time with the previous two Spider-Mans.

I especially enjoyed the humor: They managed to keep the movie serious but still light-hearted and quite refreshing! There were a lot of nostalgic scenes involving the old characters and their reunions. Letting the amazing spider-man save MJ from falling? What a heartbreaking scene. The Dr. Strange scenes were always cool, even though he seemed a little underpowered in this movie.

There were many plotlines to make it convenient for the movie. How could Ned just do magic?

I'm not sure about the ending, though. Why would Peter not just tell MJ, Ned and Happy what happened? So I guess in the end Spider-Man won't take a place replacing Iron Man... But I suppose somewhen in the (far?) future in a possible Spider-Man 4 we will see reunions happen.

Oh, and my favourite quote in the movie (I'm a mathematician): You know what's cooler than magic? Math.

Nostalgic for Germans
7 March 2022
Yes, this is just a German youtuber who made a Netflix show. Yes, this is similar to his youtube style. But Julien Bam is not just any youtuber, he is not like any of the cliche influencers out there, his work are qualitatively always insane.

In that regard, I don't quite get the imdb rating. Sure, this is not the best show you will ever see but it is certainly enjoyable.

Story-wise Julien's crew did not reinvent the wheel. Some kind of inter-dimensional disturbance shenanigans makes Julien and Joon travel through dimensions and swap bodies with their other selves. They are confronted with a different reality and face hardships while trying to get back to their original lives. In the meantime, weird things happen, from the gangster rappers to a new sister to LARP players to your obligatory quantum physics professor.

Yeah, yeah, you're right: the plot isn't out of the ordinary. But that isn't what this show is about. It's rather about the little ideas surrounding the show and the humor. Especially if you grew up with Ju and Joon's videos, many jokes will feel very nostalgic to you. And man, that German gangster language just keeps cracking me up. Wallah! Amenakoi!

The Boys (2019– )
6/10
Superhero satire
5 March 2022
Season 1 - 7/10.

This superhero show is a satire to you usual superhero movies. We have a fake superman, a fake the Flash, a fake Aquaman, etc. - so it seems that much inspiration is taken from DC.

The universe plays in a similarly corrupt worlds as the one we live in. The only difference is that they have superheroes, or "supes". On screen and in social media, they all seem like awesome righteous people but it quickly turns out that they hide more than one might expect. This is all for show and in reality there is a lot of corruption. Also, where do their powers even come from? The boys know about some of the supes heavy misdeeds and start fighting back.

It was alright. Honestly, I think the show was basically always super boring when the boys were on screen but it was often interesting when the supes were featured. They did a good show highlighting some of the corruption and ridiculing some of the superhero business but the motivation of the superheroes is not that clear. Why do they necessarily want to join the US military? One may argue about more money but the show does not at all show why these supes would need more money. I mean, Homelander is a freak who wears his superman outfit the entire day and his daily highlights is when he gets to have sex with his chef.

Season 2 - 5/10.

Meh, kinda boring. We get some new supes, get deeper into the mess Vought is in and Starlight gets closer to the boys, actually accompanying them occasionally. But man, why the heck is she so darn weak?

There is a focus on Homelander's child and quite a bit more on Homelander's insecurities. They continue to thematize some topics like religion, racism and white supremacy utilizing especially that this is an American series, as the black-white thematic and Christianity are especially prevalent in the US (but of course the same topics exist everywhere else).

But yeah. Meh. I wasn't convinced. Also not sure if some scenes needed to be added. Like the attack from the freak whose power is that he has a super long dick? That was disgusting and I don't think anyone needed to see that...

Asian American rom-com
23 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Don't you also always wish to have a good childhood friend when you see a movie like this?

(I will keep it shorter since I wrote a lot but the page somehow refreshed and everything was deleted...)

Best childhood friends, no love from parents for Sascha, felt at home at her neighbour where her best friend Marcus lived.

Marcus's mom dies at a tragic day and everything falls apart for him. In their adult life these two are as far apart as ever but as faith would have it, they come closer once again.

Classical cheesy rom-com. I love that it's about Asian Americans, though the Asian features are unfortunately not explored much in this movie. The Keanu Reeves part were eh... interesting so to speak. But meh. It had decent comedic value, I guess. The acting somehow felt a little off to me at the beginning but it got better later on.

I like the themes that the movie explores: poor vs rich, staying in their old neighbourhood vs going out into the world. The ending was actually really touching: Judy's way, I loved that and it made me a little emotional. Though I'm not sure about the little parts that came afterwards. These rap parts from Marcus are really good btw!

But now that I think about it: It was really touching but it also doesn't make sense. Why would Sascha never talk about her restaurant idea? Also, she is world-famous (+ Marcus stalks her quite a bit and even his dad knows about her previous planned marriage), so one would expect that this concept would come out eventually.

Also, what's the title of this movie even all about? It does not seem connected to the actual movie.

So yeah: story-wise it makes no sense. But it was emotional!

Oh well. What was I doing as a child and where is my childhood friend?

Biohackers (2020–2021)
9/10
Thriller with german university life
21 February 2022
Season 1 - 9/10.

That was actually sooo good! We always see the American college campus in all those Hollywood movies but rarely do we see university environments in other countries. This one is a German movie and as someone who grew up in Germany, I can identify a lot with the student life! (Besides maybe the scenes when almost the entire lecture hall was lifting their hands, lol. That would never happen in real life.)

Also, I clearly don't know what Biohacking is.

Mia is starting as a freshman medical student at Freiburg university. She moves into a shared flat with interesting flat mates and participates in a class by Professor Lorenz, a young upcoming superstar in genetic medicine. Mia seems to have an affinity for Professor Lorenz's student assistant and soon they start dating.

However, it soon turns out that Mia is following some ulterior motives. Lorenz is not what she seems, she is not an ordinary professor and a mystery slowly unfolds but also quickly escalates...

This show immediately hooked me: The characters were all very likable and it was interesting to have a super quick talking person in the show in Chen-Lu (it's been a while since I've seen this character trait in a movie/show). I love the university setting and we also very quickly dive into Mia's quest. Some aspects towards the ending were maybe a little forced and e.g. The anonymous journalist at the end was the most suspicious character ever.

Who knew the Germans can actually make good TV shows? Hätte ich nie gedacht!

Season 2 - 8/10.

Honestly, season 2 is much weaker than season 1 and doesn't preserve its flair. Nonetheless, I was somehow just hooked and it was so suspenseful that I couldn't stop watching - it's been a while since I've seen a show as good as Biohackers.

Mia wakes up after her kidnapping but she - Mia of all things - is experiencing weird symptoms. Not only that, she cannot remember the last three months and so much has changed in that time. Soon she discovers that there is more behind the Lorenz story and that the main culprit actually isn't too far off from her.

Well. Season 1 introduced so much about genetics and biohacking. What happened with all of that in season 2? Did they just completely forget possibilities of such experiments? The university setting was dropped and they again used a scene where Mia needs to sneak into a house to look for certain documents. They already overused such scenes in the previous season and here they do it again. Many moves happening are also too convenient for the plot and unrealistic.

But again: Nonetheless it was just so good. I needed to know what happened, what was behind the lost memories, why did these memories form, how do her adversaries react. Admittingly, now that I write it out there doesn't seem to be anything special about this show, but yet I repeat: It was so good!

Chernobyl (2019)
7/10
Scenic but too slow for my liking
21 February 2022
Chernobyl is a tragic story about an unfortunately very human disaster.

This docuseries portrays several events during and after the Chernobyl catastrophe focusing on the horrible aftermath of the spread radiation and on the corrupt politics in the Soviet union. Mistakes of the western world were not portrayed (which also exist, even in this Soviet crisis) - I think they would have enriched the show.

The show was very beautiful and spends a lot on setting the scenery. On the other hand, it is at times quite slow and while I understand that scenes like the wife and scenes like killing animals are absolutely necessary parts of this show to portray the aftermath of the explosion, I also did feel quite bored during these scenes.

It definitely took me a while to get through the show for one since it is slow and on the other hand since it is not easy to digest with heartfelt scenes.

No matter what, though, you do not waste your time by watching this show - you will learn something about a real nuclear catastrophe.

Red Notice (2021)

Easy watch!
18 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
There is nothing profound happening here but we have some funny personalities in this movie and it makes for an easy and enjoyable quick watch.

The movie revolves around these three golden egyptian eggs which are worth a ton along with some professional art thieves. We're immediately introduced to agent Hartley (Dwayne Johnson) from the FBI catching Booth (Ryan Reynolds), one of the best art thieves in the world. He got notice of Booth's appearance from the Bishop, the other best art thief in the world, played by Gal Gadot. But things go wrong after the capture: the Bishop took what they secured and framed agent Hartley who was then taken prisoner along with Booth. In prison he becomes a companion of Booth and they seemingly get close.

Indeed, seemingly illogical, Hartley somehow even fights against his fellow officers from the police. Why would he do that? Just so he can lay his hands on the last egg, somehow capture the Bishop and clear his name?

Yeah, it doesn't really make sense and indeed, halfway through the movie I was convinced that the best possible ending would be for Hartley to actually be a companion of the Bishop.

And see see: that's precisely what happened. It was a predictable unpredictable ending but I'm glad it happened. Because as I said anything else would probably not make sense.

It was a fun movie and never slow. The actors are funny and fitting for their characters and while it wasn't mind-blowing I definitely had a good time!

Much better than the trilogy!
16 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is the best live action Spider-Man movie besides No Way Home (which I haven't seen yet). It does so much more right than Spider-Man 1-3 even though the general population seems to prefer the original trilogy.

The story is of course not too extravagant: It's the usual superhero shenanigans. A dude got into an accident at Oscorp and developed electrical powers. He had no friends and experienced racism as a black guy living in the US. Out of hatred and confusion, all of this turned to hate. In the meanwhile, Peter and Gwen's relationship is as complicated as ever with Peter needing to keep Gwen out of his business and Gwen wanting to go to Oxford. And then, there is also still Harry...

The movie was super beautiful, that a big plus but hey also the victim was at least admirable and kinda cool. Gwen takes a position that's just so superior to MJ from the original trilogy. She is witty, charming and an intelligent independent woman. Unlike MJ whose only purpose was to be female, Gwen is smarter than Peter and takes things into her own hands. It was inevitable for Peter or Gwen to die in the end and Gwen's death was at the end unavoidable but very emotional and well done.

I think the Harry backstory was not necessarily needed - it was a bit distracting and having him as a Green Goblin sort of villain finish the battle after Electro was already defeated was a bit underwhelming, especially as there was no closure with Harry. I suppose that's because they were setting up for a third movie but also the ending after Gwen's death was probably unnecessary. Actually, now that I think about it, it seems like quite a dark ending tone if it ended on mourning over Gwen's death - so it was probably better to have a hopeful ending. Yet I felt like the ending part was a little overdone.

Enjoyable movie!

Probably only for teens
12 February 2022
Season 1 - 5/10.

Do high school students in Germany really behave like that nowadays? I feel like it's not been that long since I graduated but these scenes are sometimes really far from what I remember. I suppose I was also never the party type so idk...

Anyhow, Moritz's girlfriend came back to Germany from an exchange year in the US and Moritz has been longingly waiting for her. However, Lisa has changed and wants a break from Moritz which of course leaves him heartbroken. Moritz discovers that she has discovered an affinity to ecstasy and to win her back and make money, he started an online drug shop with his best friend.

So the motivation is really cliche: Win back a girlfriend. The non-cliche part in this story is that the drug dealers are two "nerds" instead of two hardcore guys.

The storytelling really did feel cringe and too teeny to me though. The constant social media references and the naive teens without a real plan didn't go well with me. When have I grown so old?

Stay away from this show if you've graduated from high school. If you're 15'ish this might be a show for you.

Season 2 - 5/10.

I couldn't decide whether this season was much worse or a little better than the previous one. (I continued watching because it is a quick watch and I wasn't in the mood of immersing myself in a new universe.) It is not quite as cliche anymore as the first season with the mindless girlfriend chasing in the center and the stupid hot guy and so on.

But this season also just warps about everything we know from the characters. In season 1 Moritz was absolutely obsessed with Lisa and did everything just for her. But what happened now? He barely cares and dumps her? I know they want to sell this as Moritz's character development now that he is deeper in this affair but it is not a convincing one.

Even more stupid: What have they made out of Daniel? Suddenly, he drops all of his friends and spends all of his time with Moritz and Lenny? Nobody finds that suspicious? It makes no sense at all that Daniel just completely changed...

One premise that makes the story intriguing is that the drug lord is not some hardcore dude but rather an unsociable "geek". But why do they have to make the geek so unlikable and the hot guy so charming? They're just feeding into the image that the hot guy is always cool while the nerd is what everyone wants to shy away from.

And yeah. Moritz is so crazily unlikable making it very frustrating watching the story from his perspective. I hate it when they screen annoying characters and Moritz is definitely one of those.

Season 3 - 7/10.

The last season was better. The situation was escalating, Moritz was between finding back to himself and utter insanity and Lisa grew up and actually managed to do something useful.

The abitur scenery was quite cool and takes me back to my abitur. Those really were the days... I wonder how many people actually took drugs back then?

On the other hand, I don't enjoy these contrived scenes like the conversation with Moritz' dad and the special agent. This talking past each other is very contrived and also frustrating to watch. The series has employed such techniques multiple times. They are not really welcome.

The Gronkh easter egg was fun and as was the Julien Bam easter egg in season 2. It's a cool treat for the ones immersed in the German youtube culture.

The show ends with a reunion on Skype. People of our generation can probably all identify with that in these Zoom days. This is what we young people live through nowadays. Generation Y/Z at its fullest.

How fragile politics can be
9 February 2022
Despite all the horrors that Hitler has caused, there is one good thing he has brought: He gave rise to many many novels and movies and plays a frightening antagonist scarier than what many fiction villains can be.

We are following a young brit and a young German at the event leading to the Munich agreement. The brit practically has to play to role of a spy while the young German is leading a secret Hitler opposition. They know that Hitler will not keep his promise of peace. But what can they do against it?

This was quite nicely done and transports us back to the 1930s letting us feel these fragile times. I enjoyed the movie: There was not really any action but yet it was tense and suspenseful. That is a good thing. There are too many movies with mindless fighting while good dialogue can lead to so much more.

Off the top of my head there are two points that I'm suspicious off. Firstly, Chamberlain came off as very calm and sympathetic but reading up some real life history I wonder how far from the truth his character is.

Secondly, I found this quite ridiculous: Our characters plan to overthrow Hitler with secret acts and secret documents. Where do they discuss this? In a freaking bar next to nazis. How the heck is this realistic in any way? Back in the days, many people didn't even dare speak badly about Hitler at their own homes because their neighbours and even their children could be spying for Hitler. But these guys just mindlessly plot overthrowing Hitler while drinking a beer in a bar next to a myriad of people. Very safe.

But well, it is historical fiction after all, so there ought to be some fictional elements...

The Flight Attendant (2020–2022)
7/10
Flight attendants have pretty wild lives
8 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Season 1 - 8/10.

Not everyday you would follow the perspective of a flight attendant.

The protagonist Cassie (played by Kaley Cuoco) is an alcoholist due to childhood issues. After a blackout, she wakes up next to a dead guy and panics. She clears the scene and tries to cover up this because she's afraid that the authorities would not believe her story. Throughout the show we uncover more and more about the incident, the underlying motivation and Cassie's childhood.

The filming was quite creative: We often see shots from multiple scenes at once. We also often dive into Cassie's unconscious where she is grappling with mental struggles. The latter was nice at the beginning but feels a bit overused after a while.

There is also a backstory about Cassie's childhood and her dad along with present scenes with her brother. These should portray why Cassie is an alcoholic but is otherwise really not that interesting: It's a classic abuse by alcoholic parent story.

The characters are all pretty interesting and there is a strong female case. Kaley was a fine Cassie and we see her from a different light than The Big Bang Theory's Penny. Cassie's lawyer friend Ani is a strong character and one always feels safe when she's on the screen. The twist at the end that Cassie's flight attendant coworker was from the CIA was unexpected. Nice twist!

There is also a side story about Megan mostly to justify the CIA coworker but other than that it seemed a bit of a waste up until now since it was not relevant modulo the CIA guy. Maybe there will be a focus on her in season 2. There better be.

I really much enjoyed this show and am looking forward to season 2!

Season 2 - 5/10.

Is it even still about a flight attendant? Season 2 was trying to connect way too many storylines at once which were all sort of disconnected and also not that interesting.

Cassie is still a flight attendant, yeah. But now she is actually also part of the CIA! Moreover, she is attending meetings for alcoholics and trying her best to be and to stay sober. Certainly this alcoholism problematic accompanies us the entire show and as one would expect, when the show would slowly escalate, so would Cassie's desire to drink.

Somehow Cassie is involved in another murder mystery where someone portrayed to be her. There are more bad guys involved and they all sort of do bad things but the motivation is not that interesting nor clear. The most heartbreaking moment might be Cassie's encounter with her mom. That was definitely a tough scene that I have never seen before in this form.

I myself wasn't a huge fan of the story and not too hooked this time around. I would say that the alcoholism thematic is the most important part being portrayed in this show and that it indeed shows how difficult it is to deal with such problems. In such, again the mind games and conversations with people in her mind appeared again but I never liked those scenes here.

Alcoholism or any kind of addictions are hard to break and a break is hard to maintain. But it is worth the try.
