La Brea (2021)
4 episodes in...
...I was interested, the premise was unusual, kind of a modern day Jules Verne story,.
I am no longer interested.
In episode 4 we come to understand, that the "rescue mission" the US government sent, for some 30+ survivors, was one guy in a plane that holds 12 passengers, with zero supplies (except for the standard emergency kit), zero equipment and zero spare parts.
On top of that, the cast continues to mill around pointlessly, with zero care for their own security (nobody has even sharpened a stick), after having been attacked by both wolves, sable tooth tigers, and a mysterious unknown enemy, all while being busy flirting and working out family issues.
Anyone who can write something this dumb, is most definitely unable to create a storyline that will keep me interested, sorry.
Titans (2018)
It's actually very good.
I must admit, I was a little iffy on this show season 1.
However it has most definitely grown on me, to a degree where I believe it to be one of the best superhero shows currently around, together with The Umbrella Academy and The Boys.
It is a slow paced show, which takes its time developing both the story and the characters, and the actions scenes are sparsely disbursed throughout the show, so if you want a fast, action packed show, this is not it.
On the plus side, the excellent cast is allowed to constantly evolve their characters, and the story is allowed permeate and keep you interested.
The tone is dark, like in the best Batman movies, which is sadly rare on "TV" these days.
I highly recommend it.
Hell's Kitchen (2005)
Season 19 - a star is born
Not necessarily a culinary star, the culinary level in HK is too low for that, but the contestant Mary Lou is destined to be a reality/cooking TV star, because her personality is charming, intelligent, funny and infectious..... a rare gem.
I have found my love for HK again because of her, with several LOLs along the way.
All in all, the casting for season 19 was better than seen in a long time, both in terms of less contentious personalities, and in terms of better cooking talent.
The casting director deserves a raise.
Away (2020)
Very good sci-fi drama.
I didn't really have that great expectations going in, the pretext sounded a bit boring, a bit too "family friendly".
However having just finished season 1, I have to say I am quite impressed. Impressed enough that I care to write this.
The character development is slow (but profound), the tone is restrained, the dramas understated, but it is a very well crafted script, with excellent acting performances all round, and make for a very compelling viewing experience.
It's like American Downton Abbey in space, and I like it a lot.
I am certain younger audiences may find it boring and lacking "action", but for a discerning taste, this is a potential hit show.
