Salò o le 120 giornate di Sodoma (1975)
Debauched, Disturbing, and ...Deep?
Pasolini invites you to watch, but not join in. As the despair of four high ranking leaders of the failing fascist party, leads them to attempt to fill their last days with as much debauched, depraved and disgusting "pleasure" as possible. These men, their entourage, 3 invited women and coerced body guards make a pact to isolate them selves with 18 children captured from around the country. Hand picked for their beauty, innocence and timidity, these children will suffer for the pleasure of the four men. In watching this movie a few scenes stand out from the violence, rape and coprophagia, the quiet moments when planes can be heard overhead, the violence stops not intentionally it can be missed. Just for a moment you can see the despair of the monsters. Once you see this you see that they are trying above all to enjoy themselves in the world they built for themselves, The only consolation to the viewers of this film, is that they do not the war planes over head remind them that they're doomed the deathly quiet of the monsters pretending to live out their sick fantasies reminds the viewer that even the monsters struggle to enjoy this twisted fantasy.
The Edge (1997)
Survival movie if there ever was one
I first saw 5 minutes of this movie in 2001 and could never find it until this week. I am happy it was worth the wait. Anthony Hopkins is charles Morse who is on a journey to survive the harsh Alaskan wilderness a blood thirsty bear but can he trust the men he's stranded with. An intelligent man using his "theoretical" knowledge of survival. Alec Baldwin is Bob a big city photogragher that Charles has his suspicions about but cannot survive without. Stephen is a photographers aid and he's working to survive and cannot keep cool. What happens next is a thrilling test of what it means to be a man, what does friendship mean, and what does money do to a man.
Enemy at the Gates (2001)
Amazing
This film will always have a place in my heart, a classic heroic tale, the hero fighting not for any real cause but because he must.He finds love and his enemy. his rise to glory is meteoric but he must face the enemy all is on the line his glory his love and his life.
taking place during the great patriotic war(WWII, eastern front) the desperate cause of the USSR to beat back the tide of Nazism, men are forced to fight with meager means our hero is one of the grunts and by chance he lives and is brought out to the war effort as a hero than he fights the pressure and the feeling of his inability but he faces all challenges and faces great hardships.
The Ninth Gate (1999)
that ending though.
the film is great when the protagonist begins the journey. reluctantly taking on the task of locating a book nearly lost to time but all copies are being collected. nefarious cults and a mysterious helper cloud his mind as he faces death and if forced to do what he doesn't wish to do. seriously there is a jump off a cliff in the end i recommend shutting the movie off when the green eyes make sense. all that comes after is a crappy cartoony light and castle i admit a good ending to this film would have been difficult an Polanski didn't meet it.
Depp is great in his role
Det sjunde inseglet (1957)
A quest for understanding.
this film challenges the viewer to question their own faith and ideas that they may join the knight on his quest for answers as he plays a game of chess with death to buy time. the companions he finds as he travels all have troubles in life and play a role in the knights return to faith.
This film is dark by nature (war beaten soldiers, plague, murder, witch burning, death all around) however no gross gore but mild violence. there are the comical relief moments though(surprisingly by death him self) good watch a film that hasn't lost its affect despite decades and language barrier.
