The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power: The Eye (2022)
Huge Disappointment
After a great last episode that gave me a lot of hope for the future of the show, the plot once again screeches to a halt. We get a corny speech from the almost hobbit and a hint of a balrog. There is no action and nothing of substance. We all know isildur isn't dead. The ending of the episode has "south lands" disappear and "morder" flashes on screen. Something about that seemed so cheap and lackluster. Yes, we already knew it was becoming Mordor you don't have to type it out. Elrond and Durin's bromance is the only half redeeming part of this episode and still not enough to do any justice to the franchise.
The Terminal List: Transience (2022)
Became unrealistic
I've loved every episode up until this one. I'm all for a navy SEAL turned rogue revenge seeker. Every episode up until now had its unrealistic or far fetched moments, but that's to be expected with action flicks. But hiding under pine needles like Rambo? Then causing a landslide that somehow doesn't kill you? Performing terrible CPR that revives an agent after also being in the same landslide? Got to the point of being too much for me. Still a great show overall, but reminded me too much of an overkill 80s action movie.
The Wheel of Time (2021)
Good and could be great
Let's get the bad out of the way immediately. Skipping the prologue from the books and opening with narration and a jarringly unnecessary scene with the red sisters was atrocious. But it quickly went uphill after that. The chemistry of the Emonds Field 3 is fantastic. Moiraine, Lan, Nyneave, Tam, Thom, and Mat all have standout performances. The shadow spawn is horrifying and well done. Scenery is gorgeous. Most of the plot line is there with the exception of a few changes that I'll withhold judgment on until the plot plays out more. Contains many Easter eggs for books fans and relatively thorough explanations for those who haven't read the books. Plenty of action but it can be rushed at times when attempting to fit everything into a few episodes. A few random takes: moiraine's movements while channeling looked a bit goofy for lack of a better word. Whitecloaks being able to capture, torture, and kill aes sedai seems highly unlikely given the difficulty that would be involved.
Overall, I'm so happy seeing these books come to life on screen. I'm highly optimistic and think the critiques will only make the following seasons better and can't wait for the character arcs to fully develop.
Update: the season finale was horrendous. Tarwins gap is supposed to be when we realize the power of Rand. Instead, a white tower drop out wields enough power to destroy a trolloc army and then death is healable. The horn of Valerie is already found. Matt is gone. Loial is dead but will somehow survive. A love triangle with Egwene, Perrin, and Rand. The CGI looked like an 80s Sci-fi flick. I'm appalled at how bad it was. I really thought after the first few episodes,
there was a lot of potential. I don't know how they come back from this...
The Perfect Weapon (2020)
Relevant and Terrifying
You don't have to look any farther than the other reviews to see how relevant this documentary is. Sowing discord among the US population has never been easier as the world becomes increasingly digitalized. The US opened the door to cyberwarfare with stuxnet and we are now only beginning to see the long term consequences. The documentary does a great job of outlining the largest cyber attacks up until the present day and further speculates on what the future holds. A great watch and I hope it alerts the public to the importance of this threat and realizing that warfare will never be the same.
