Baron Prásil (1962)
Visually stunning surrealism
The usage of color droplets in water combined with black and white or highly decolonized film make for impressive visual effects which give it a unique and timeless look.
Pairing Baron Munichhausen with a modern day Astronaut is a fresh new take on the story. Although the story loses somewhat its momentum once the focus shifts to the love affair between the astronaut and the princess.
Les Maîtres du temps (1982)
Les Maitres Du Temps is a timeless (pun) classic
It is basically an animated road trip movie in space where there isn't one coherent plot but one overall goal (rescuing Piel) and otherwise we meet many different characters and stories along the way. Some are really great others are eh, looking at you faceless angels.
Nothing in this has aged and the animation as weird and beautiful as it was 40 years ago. The movie hasn't aged but I sure did.
Star Trek: Discovery: That Hope Is You, Part 1 (2020)
Feel bad about the animators working on this.
There are some really cool animations and cgi in this that would they be in service of a good story make for an enjoyable movie.
Ok in this episode there actually is too little plot yet to definitely say that its bad but we know the writers by now. Just as an example of bad writing: Guy scans entire galaxy for the discovery and doesn't find anything; then 2 sentences later tells them that long range scanners are gone and noone can scan more than 30 sectors away...
Let's now come to big elephant in the room: Sonequa Martin-Green. She is a horrendous actress. She has 2 very cringey scenes in this episode alone. The start where she laughs at live signs for no reason, the one where she's drugged and acts 'funny'. After 3 seasons its save to say that the biggest issue with Discovery (aside from not being star trek) is having a show entirely revolving around 1 person and have a really bad actress fill that role.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (1981)
This is the best version of the Hitch Hikers Guide
Douglas Adams has made a lot of versions of the Guide through out the years.
It started as a radio play then came this series and finally he wrote the books.
This adaptation has great actors and sets which make it really work (unlike the radio version that had background noise drown out the dialogue).
The only bad part about this version is Trillian, who is characterized as a stupid blonde girl rather than the smart woman she's in other versions.
Star Trek: Lower Decks: Moist Vessel (2020)
I liked the first 30 seconds of the episode.
So my exact reaction:
When the episode starts out explaining the setting of a generational colony ship that is adrift in space I was intrigued.
Then Ensign Mariner comes on screen yawns and start annoying everyone.
That's when I remembered: oh yeah this is a show made by people who don't like star trek or scifi for people that don't like star trek or scifi.
Star Trek: Lower Decks: Temporal Edict (2020)
I could watch white noise and be more entertained
For a comedy it lacks jokes.
The only funny part was the Miles O'brien Statue. But only because of the in-joke that comes from reading the 'Miles obrien at work' web comic... which is 100 times funnier than this show and also portrays doing a dead end job better.
Star Trek: Lower Decks: Envoys (2020)
Not funny enough to be a parody or serious enough to be actual star trek (by a long shot)
If you want a show about a dead end job on a space ship, watch Red Dwarf.
If you want a show about a funny scifi parody, watch Rick and Morty.
If you want a show about star trek, watch any star trek pre 2009.
If you want a show that is all those things but worse, watch Lower Decks.
Mariner is the worst character ever. She is constantly mean to other people and annoying ADD behavior. The other 3 characters are ok to watch although still not very funny either.
The characters don't behave like star trek characters at all. And they aren't acting "realistic" either. Because if anyone would act like that IRL they'd get punched in the face constantly.
Current holders of star trek IP have no idea what to do with the franchise, so they throw everything at the wall and see what sticks... well everything except an actual star trek show that is.
Star Trek: Lower Decks (2020)
A unfunny Rick and Morty copy
Visually the show would be great, and especially the backgrounds and ships feel very much TNG era Star Trek. But it doesn't matter if there isn't an engaging story or likable characters to latch onto.
Apparently McMahan doesn't know how to write a show that is not Rick and Morty. Worse he apparently wasn't the one doing the jokes as this is entirely unfunny.
The pacing is way too fast. Everyone talks at warpspeed and apparently they hope that is enough to make us laugh. Problem is they don't actually talk about anything funny or insightful.
This is neither a parody of star trek nor actual star trek. It's just a bunch of reject b-plots from Rick and Morty sprinkled in with references to star trek.
Rick and Morty: Star Mort Rickturn of the Jerri (2020)
Good end to an other wise bad season
The last 3 episodes were how the rest of the season should have have been. When I am rewatching R&M I know to safely skip ep2-6.
We have a nice arc with every member of the family growing as a character juxtaposed to horrendous violence and cosmic horror.
No evil Morty either but that is ok since it would have sucked to be just 1 episode. Evil Morty needs to be either a 2 parter or a 5 second gag where they kill him off screen to really mess with some people.
I have to agree with Morty when he says that it's not citizen kane but it is still fun to watch and engaging.
Dark Star (1974)
Best Carpenter Movie!
By far the best movie John Carpenter ever made.
Unlike his better known movies The Thing or They Live, Dark Star is a dark comedy and not horror which I guess explains the low score cause it is not what people associate with Carpenter.
But Dark Star is at its core a story about worker alienation. The space crew has done a mundane boring job for the past 20 years and there is no end in sight. It's just that their job is to blow up planets in space.
Red Dwarf: The Promised Land (2020)
It's OK
Seasons 1-4 were near perfect, 4-6 were good. We don't talk about season 8.
The new seasons from 9 onwards are still good but fail to capture the pure magic we had in the original.
Problem through out is always the same: too many cast members and too much production budget. When the show was just 4 guys in a room it was the best.
But still there are many laughs in this one (although the cat motive is worked to death).
And they even have Norman Lovett back as Holly! BUT they failed to use him correctly. He just plays a mind wiped version that still has 6000 IQ and such just throws them off the ship immediately so he basically has no screen time. I really don't get why they got him back and then don't let him play his old role!
Rick and Morty: The Vat of Acid Episode (2020)
The first good episode of the season. Took them only 7 episodes to get here.
Season 4 has been really bad to mediocre. But unlike the other episodes this one has a plot! And character arcs! And existential nightmares about our own worthless existence! The stuff you thought were standard in rick and morty before season 4.
So yeah. This one is actually good. Even if the entire season up to now has been a Family-Guy-esque clip show of unfunny jokes.
Rick and Morty: Promortyus (2020)
Recycled ideas.
So. The whole "society has been mind controlled" thing has been done by them already with unity. So this really is just some sort of rehash of their own material. Which might be why it is at least one of the better episodes. Although this time the attempt to humanize the body snatching parasite falls flat both on moral and comedic angles.
Season 4 so far has been one giant disappointment after the other. There are no interesting themes in the episodes, no mind shattering realizations of an uncaring universe. Not even interesting character development. Jerry bee keeps now. That is the extend of character growth we got this episode.
But worse it isn't even particularly funny either.
Rick and Morty: Never Ricking Morty (2020)
Subpar
We are witnessing the FamilyGuy-ization of Rick and Morty right now. Ok admittedly this is a interdimnesional cabel (sort of) episode so it is supposed to be a clip show. But it is just not funny. And failing that there is just no saving the thing.
Also Episodes 1-5 haven't been that well structured or funny either. Rick and Morty used to be a really thoughtful show with deep underlying philosophical themes and a primordial existential dread to juxtapose everything with.
That is what I want from R&M and they just don't deliver anymore. Even the weakest episodes in season 1-3 had more to say then this. The "There is no point, come watch TV" moment is actually from another clip show episode, so its not like I am asking for stuff that hasn't been there before.
This episode, or rather the whole season, has been subpar for the standards they have set in the past.
Going Postal (2010)
Very good adaption of the book
Aside from Thief of time Going Postal is my favorite Diskworld novel. And this movie adaption stays very true to the book. It was always thought that you can't really adapt Sir Pratchetts books because you lose what makes his books: the great language and word play. But Going Postal is probably as close as you can get.
Superman III (1983)
If you expect a comic book movie you might be disappointed but it is a nice comedy instead
Recent comic book movies have gotten way to serious. People forget that a guy who flies around in his underwear is inherently a silly concept and should not be attempted to go dark and gritty.
This movie is often hated because it doesn't take anything serious. Which is obvious from the start that is one prolonged slap stick gag.
But that's why it is my favorite Superman movie. It remembers that you can have fun in movies rather then mope around all day.
Robin and Marian (1976)
Highly underrated subversive take on Robin Hood by Richard Lester.
It is Robin Hood yet things are completely different right off the bat. Sean Connery plays Robin Hood as they are on the crusades together with King Lionheart, who gets mortally wounded by a stray arrow as he ordered his men to slaughter an undefended village.
It continues from there Robin Hood isn't the hero we know, the sheriff isn't as bad as we know and the love between Robin and Marian isn't as pure as we know.
Everything is arranged in a new and interesting way which makes a great viewing experience.
Star Trek: Picard: Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 2 (2020)
Why not put a phaser to my head and end it all?
These are the pleasant thoughts Seven contemplates in the first minutes of the episodes. BRIGHT AND HOPEFUL FUTURE, EVERYONE!
The writing has been atrocious through out the series and it stays atrocious till the end.
Riker and other nostalgia bait stuff are here again to trick people into liking the show. This show doesn't create, it leeches off the creativity of other people who came before it.
I hate what they did to Raffi's character in the show. She just constantly spouts meta-commentary such as "synth-b*tch" , "Abusive Romulan boyfriend" etc.
This isn't Star Trek but it isn't even Sci-fi either. It starts out with Rios repairing the ship with a magic device that makes what ever you can imagine (green lantern?).
The characters are bad. The writing is bad. The continuity is bad. They still haven't explained what Maddox actually had to do with anything, why the robots are build in pairs or why we should care about them if they are so willing to destroy all live in the galaxy.
Also the lovecraftian monsters apparently can't come through the rift after the distress beacon is shut off. So much for super advanced synth race.
But it got cool slposions in it so 10/10!!!
Murder by Death (1976)
Great Comedy and dissection of typical detective stories.
All the tropes Agatha Christie and other crime story writers usually fall back on are parodied extensively in this comedy.
The cast is excellent with almost every one having played a detective in the past and are now here to rip on their old characters, so to speak.
Peter Falk even plays a character that is not Columbo because of copyright but looks exactly the same.
A great movie for everyone that love\hates detective stories.
The Prisoner (1967)
The closest you can come to surrealism on tv
The first few episodes of the series will make you think that there is a plot going on that might get resolved. It will not. But by then you don't care anymore.
A lot happens. Everything feels surreal, not quite right. Like in a dream where you have the feeling that something is off but you can't tell what or why.
So you watch the prisoner number 6 struggle to find a grip with reality as much as you do yourself.
If this description turned you off, chances are you are not the target audience. It is certainly not for everyone. You need to like this kind of stuff beforehand to be able to appreciate the series.
Brazil (1985)
It is Terry Gilliams 2nd best movie after 12 Monkeys
Brazil is a kafkaesque bureaucratic dystopia, where the government isn't evil but impersonal and uncaring. So basically the real world.
While I think this movie to be near perfect, I recognize that its not for everyone. People who don't like fantastical "arty" movies will probably turn this off.
There are dream sequences through out the movie that have no purpose other than to set the theme for the end of the movie. But they are still very imaginative.
This together with 12 Monkeys is Terry Gilliams greatest work.
12 Monkeys (1995)
One of the only timetravel stories that works.
The logic in timetravel movies is often contradictory but not here. Everything makes sense (or rather is internally consistent because timetravel ofc doesn't work).
This movie together with Brazil is the best Terry Gilliam has ever made. The movie deals with trauma, suppressed memories, our perception of reality and the human psyche in general.
It is no coincidence that the first place the time traveler visits in the past is an insane asylum. This sets the theme for the rest of the movie.
Both Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt give an excellent performance.
It is without hyperbole a near perfect movie.
The Zero Theorem (2013)
One of the weaker Terry Gilliam movies but sill good.
Terry Gilliam never makes a totally bad movie (except Jabberwocky, I mean omg). His movies always have a unique visual style and fantastical feel to them.
Though Zero theorem is one of the weaker stories he has told. At the end of the movie the bad guy has to literally explain the movies plot in a monologue, that's how bad the plot is. Brazil or 12 monkeys never felt the need to explain their own plot; you got everything you need to know from actually watching the movie.
So yeah, if you are a die hard fan of Gilliam you should watch it, other wise watch Brazil or 12 Monkeys.
Zardoz (1974)
It's a must see movie
I am the first to admit that long stretches of the movie are bad and or boring. But the scenes that are great are pure art.
Chances are your first encounter with zardoz is from another show (like the simpsons) parodying it. There are many iconic scenes in the movie that are both filled with tension and mind provokingly thought full.
It is worth seeing this movie for the experience alone, or at least to finally get what everyone else is parodying.
The Ice Pirates (1984)
Great B-movie scifi comedy
I don't get why the score of ice pirate is so low on here. It's a cult classic I enjoyed very much. There are countless funny gags that don't feel out of place like in other comedies.
Ofc it's a B movie with low budget so the effects aren't mind breaking but in a comedy that shouldn't be the most important part. It's should be if you are entertained by the movie and Ice Pirates certainly does that.
