Logan Lucky (2017)
Why did I waste an hour before giving up?
I suppose if you're no older than 12 you could watch this ridiculous hokum but surely no grown up could put up with it. I enjoy a good laugh but this is too ridiculous for words.
A bunch of low achievers first of all waltz into a prison and borrow one of the inmates so that he can take part in a robbery, Somehow they know they can just take a hand wash machine off the wall in the toilets, walk through a few passage ways and get out the other end. They then have access to two panels that fit under a prison van which they somehow fix themselves into, we don't get to see how this bit of magic is achieved and they let themselves out again when the van is outside.
They do this in order to rob a bank vault underground. It was at this point and I honestly don't know how I got this far that I had to stop watching for my own sanity. I can't believe that grown up, presumably intelligent people can spend no doubt millions of dollars to make utter rubbish like this..
Saloon Bar (1940)
Lovely stuff from another era
British character actors at their best. The wonderful Gordon Harker stands out as usual but there isn't a weak link in the cast. The story is okay but doesn't matter that much, it's all about the atmosphere and the cast. A real comedy drama with the accent on the comedy. Why don't the make films like this any more and thank you Talking Pictures for making so many available.
Burn (2019)
Well worth watching
Is this likely to happen? No of course not but if we only had films that were likely then cinema would have died out long ago. This dares to be different and hallelujah for that. We weren't being fed rehashed ideas, we were being treated to something original. And the lead actress was excellent but there were no bad performances and it all adds up to a very entertaining 90 minutes. Well done all involved.
The Trouble with Maggie Cole (2020)
Three stars for the scenery and some of the cast, otherwise this is almost as bad as it gets.
The 3 stars are for the lovely SW countryside and a mostly decent cast. Trouble is the decent cast are struggling against an awful script and plot. Did somebody actually think that scenario was in any way believable? That a grown, intelligent woman would trust a radio reporter and do a hatchet job on every friend and acquaintance she has, yes I know he got her a bit tipsy but for God's sake that was just plain ridiculous. The characters are extremely cliched as well. Watched the first episode and stuck with it to halfway through the second for the sake of the hard labouring cast and lovely scenery but enough is enough. This is truly dire, it's drivel, a waste of valuable resources and shown up by so much other good drama we've had recently.
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
Great songs, great band, poor film.
Perhaps I expected too much but I was very disappointed. The script was hackneyed and very cliched and I thought this didn't help the actors at all, also the story didn't flow. I didn't really feel that you got to know any of the characters, they were very much cardboard cut-outs. The music was great but then we knew that anyway, for me it was the only good thing about the entire movie. Sorry, I hate giving bad reviews.
The Magnificent Seven (2016)
Missed opportunity.
Did anybody else think it came closer to a Blazing Saddles re-make than the Magnificent Seven? What would have raised it to a great movie would have been Slim Pickens trying to get Denzil Washington to sing Camptown Races.
The Seven here were closer to the Village People than to Yul and his gang, we were only a Motorcycle Cop short.
A great cast let down by a very poor script, why wasn't Skaarsgard twiddling his moustache as he said, 'bring on the Gatling gun.' And what a coincidence that such a bunch of desperadoes were suddenly ready to lay down their lives to save a small town. The script and screenplay could have been written by a 5 year old, and not necessarily the brightest five year old in the class.
The Windsors (2016)
Great fun.
This is typical British humour at it's best. Great cast who deliver the excellent scripts with a straight face (and stiff upper lip.) I've just watched the first episode of season two and it's even funnier than the first series. The fact that we laugh at things like this is probably the reason that the monarchy survives in this country more's the pity.
