Agneepath (2012)
Audacious Remake...!!
My title for this review would have conveyed the message already. However, let me start with Boquets first..the Brick bats are reserved for later.
1. Rishi Kapooor...Wow what a performance, I liked him in "Do Duni Char", now I am a Fan. probably one of the redeeming performance of this flick.
2. Young Vijay Deenanath chauhan. Great acting and emoting by the young lad.
3. Priyanka chopra. Agreed that her role is a mere accessory, but in what ever scene she appears she steals the show. "hey! the Maharashtrian Shaadi scene! seems like a dejavu, reminds me of Kaminey..
4. Sanjay Dutt's Make up and appearance. great , (I wish as much effort was put on his character and dialogues.)
5. Some great cinematography and visual effects (Bollywood got money, lets flaunt it, no issues)
6. Katrina. I am confused whether to add her in the boquet list or in the brick bat list. Great effort by her fast moves and all (an a what a bod!!) but does look a bit sexy and the entire song seems like being deliberately inserted into the movie. the scene required a more sultry and menacing, Dirty item number there, rather than a this glamorous one.
Now the Brick Bats
1. How in the world did they think they can remake a classic and a sloppy one at that. I am not cribbing about their taking on the iconic Bachchan. (we all know that even Bachchan himself cannot repeat some of his great work, such is his quality..but thats another discussion)
2. Characterisation of Kancha. just by make up and some special effects one cannot bring out the viciousness of a character. I think the production team was overly inspired by Hollywood villains who are mostly mentally unstable and freakish. Kancha was mostly amusing than fear inspiring. Repeated dialogues taken out of Bhagavad Gita...et all
3. crappy editing and story telling. this is a great proof that story telling and screen play is of great importance, and can transform a common plot to a great movie, or a great story to laughing stock.
4.Casting Hrithik. This is a great injustice to Hrithik being cast in the first place. He will be compared with the Great performance by a great actor. and Come on! Hrithik! for this role!!. Hrithik is not legendary for his character roles. He is an Action hero and left best doing his super hero Dhoom's. Emotional Angry man roles are not his cup of Tea, with due respect.
5. Music not so Karan Joharish. In a movie like Agneepath, either eliminate all artificial songs (if you want to include songs make it subtle like "tumse milke" in Parinda), the thumkas like gun gunaa seems out of place.
6. Missing Mithun's memorable role ! and somewhat substituting with eunuchs..what are they upto.
7. Agreed that they own the Brand, but they cannot waste it in this kind of a remake. SRK and Farhan did a decent job with Don. I didn't get this "being cheated" feeling when I cam out of Don.I have not seen its sequel though. Karan johar would have been better off remaking "HUM" it has all the ingredients that he can handle well. Agneepath's are to be left more serious film makers.
The rating of 2 was given soon after exiting from the cinema hall and let me not revise that.
Hey, having said all this,if the movie goes on make its money.. just mortified by depreciating expectations of the audience.
Action Replayy (2010)
Great movie - kind of relief from Akshay's usual grind
It took me so many days to watch this because of the bad ratings and negative reviews. I don't know why it is criticised so much, no doubt the theme is heavily inspired from Hollywood flick "back to the future". But what an adaptation and improvisation on the concept. Without being overly serious and complicated, the story has been told in a with a lighter approach, and perfectly executed. In my opinion one of good movies of Akshay. Great performances in all departments. I am happy that I didn't miss this one and could watch it better late than never. Funny costumes and situations, so what? It lends a kind of creative and fresh feel to the film. And as usual Ash is ravishing and breathing takingly beautiful. I hope this movie gains its ratings eventually like many good movies. Ab galat criticise karnewaley "Awaaz Neeche"!!
Stanley Ka Dabba (2011)
Could have been better
Great concept, great performances but short on the convincing story & Character development and poor ending. How can no one in the school doesn't know about Stanley's background, the plot could have been more convincing like the principal knowing about the kids background, or Something like Rosy Teacher, accidentally seeing Stanley on the Job or something like that, there are a few more loopholes in the story like no particular reason is mentioned as to why Mr.Kadoos never gets his own dabba. But 10 on 10 for performance, concept and message of the film. Great work on the food photography and lot of details and authentic food photographed.
Unnaipol Oruvan (2009)
Poor Remake
With a Stellar star cast, they have managed to churn out a mediocre remake. At least if they had stuck to the original script, they would have done justice to movie. A half hearted attempt at showing some originality. Kamal of Dashavataram and Anbe-Sivam, associating with this kind of production quality is not acceptable. Some of Kamal's earlier Hindi remakes like Kurudipunal, were actually better than the original. I have watched "A Wednesday" more than 5 times, while it was so hard to see this even once. Lakhsmi's acting is also a great let down, and the raw anger in Arif character was excellently portrayed by "jimmy Shergil" could not be matched in this movie. Mohanlal was a bad choice for the commissioner role, I was actually expecting Nasser in that role. Probably if Kamala Hasan was not part of this movie, my expectations would have been less. ...a forgettable Kamal movie..after a long time..
