Ski School (1991)
Ooff, that's some serious cheese
These first Ski School alone is difficult to sit through sober, the cheese factor is absolutely through the roof. I can't imagine any sane person watching both of this and Ski School 2 back to back. I recently watched this in a moment of nostalgia, and realized I had absolutely terrible taste in movies as teen. Even thought this came out at the beginning of the 90's, the stench of the late 80's had not completely died yet. And since the first film was shot in the very tail end of the 1989, you could technically call it an 80's movie. But even that's a hard sell, because that would mean you also consider this to be an actual movie when in reality it is just a brain-cell-destroying debacle of cliche slinging corn ball humor smothered in neon colored cheese.
Letterkenny (2016)
Overused, repeatative jokes and wooden acting
Almost every member of the cast could be replaced with a particle board cut out and the acting wouldn't seem nearly as wooden and stiff as the actual actors. First couple of seasons it were ok (Shoresy scenes are pretty funny), but every single bit get totally reused over and over again to the point of becoming completely predictable. I get its initial charm but the bloom comes off that rose by season 4 because of how overused, and repetitive everything becomes.
Here is the formula for every episode: Say "Pitterpatter" multiple times, slow motion entrances to bass heavy music, have a conversation with an overly sexed up bartender, hockey banter, farts, drink beer and whiskey, say "Dial it back __ percent" multiple times, bring up sex with an ostrich, someone gets kicked in the crotch, talk about degenerates from up-country, talk about genitalia, have a scene where someone is sitting on a toilet -Randomize these elements and repeat for 10 years.
Pickle and Peanut (2015)
A great cartoon made for the wrong audience
If you are a fan of Tim and Eric, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Ren and Stimpy, or other offbeat absurdist humor, you will enjoy this cartoon. It's a funny, witty cartoon that had this misfortune to be placed on the wrong network (Disney XD) and for the wrong audience (tweens). If this had been on Adult Swim, it would have been a cult sensation. I applaud Disney XD for trying produce different kinds of cartoons that are more edgy and creative to attract new viewers, and this cartoon definitely succeeds in that regard, but it was destined to fail due to the average age of the Disney XD viewer. Pickle and Peanut has a lot of parallels to Mr. Meaty in that both shows premiered on networks whose primary audience would not connect with the show, they were shown on timeslots not conducive to the audience they were made for, and the absurd nature of the show (while funny and abstract) actually turned people off. Pickle and Peanut is a very solid cartoon, the jokes are funny, the writing is good, the voice acting is great, it just didn't connect with kids.
NOS4A2 (2019)
Mediocre horror/suspense drama
I have not read the books, so I am just going off what I saw in on the tv show. Like a lot of new shows, it is just a mix reused ideas. For example, a scary man with long sharp nails who uses motion to steal life force from people (Something Wicked This Way Comes), young people battling forces of evil (It, Stranger Things, Buffy The Vampire Slayer), and of course the teen coming to terms with powers under the backdrop of a dysfunctional family. The cast is fairly solid, and the dialogue is well written enough. However, the overall feel of the show seems to be trying desperately trying to force a Stephen King vibe through everything. I would rate this higher, but all the borrowed ideas, characters, and situations makes me really dislike it. Most people seem to hold the book in high regard, and the synopsis I read seems drastically different from what is portrayed in this subpar tv show, so it is probably safe to assume that tv writers for this show are just absolutely terrible at translating a probably great book into an engaging tv show.
United We Fall (2020)
Another "Fat Guy/Hot Wife" Sitcom
Do not expect much from this sitcom. I've watched the two episodes currently up and it is pretty much a copy of King of Queens (They are literally using the same set from King of Queens) but with the addition of children. I gave it 5 stars because Will Sasso is unquestionably funny and even though this sitcom is fairly vanilla, he can still get an occasional chuckle out of me. However, like other people have pointed out, the massive overuse of canned laughter is completely unbearable. I would be surprised if this sitcom lasted for more than two - three seasons since it is just reusing the same tired formula used by other sitcoms. Not completely terrible but definitely not anything new or original. It is something you leave on to entertain the kids while you make dinner.
The Big Show Show (2020)
A below average sitcom for below average intelligence/maturity
This sitcom belongs on the Disney Channel not Netflix. It isn't just bad, it is moronically subpar. I cringed more than laughed through 3 painfully terrible episodes. The acting, jokes, situations, all of it bland, cheesy, and completely unoriginal, even the premise is unoriginal as the pro-wrestler dad sitcom had already been done in the 1980s (Learning the Ropes with Lyle Alzado) when people still cared about pro wrestling. The only thing it succeeds is taking reused ideas and making them even worse. To me, the constant reuse of terrible sitcom gags in this was the sitcom equivalent of taking a filthy used diaper, shaking it out in a trash can and thinking it was good enough to be used again.
