Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
STD - needs a good dose of antibiotics
*contains spoilers* - actually the whole lot so far is a spoiler.
Like many Trekkies I was intently waiting and excited for Star Trek - Discovery.
Like many I was disappointed. What we were expecting was a reboot of a TV show that has connected generations and dealt with many social and political issues whilst flying at warp 7.
What we got was Deb - you know, that bland, tasteless, inane version of mashed potatoes that looks amazing yet tastes like my Nan's shingles.
STD - an appropriate acronym - doesn't really discover anything other than political correctness, terrible camera work and a space battle that looks like the 1970's arcade version of Spaceship. There's no drama, no humour (aside from that sebaceous cyst lookalike science officer who seems like he has a bad case of constipation combined with an STD), The Klingons look like they've been microwaved that little bit too long, and technology better than Voyager. That's why prequels rarely work - can't resist the urge to include new tech and fabulous effects that makes the reboot look like a fake. And this is exactly that.
Boldly going where man has been before....beam me up.
Handsome Devil (2016)
A movie we all can relate to
I picked this off Netflix on a boring Saturday afternoon. Boy I wish I had seen it sooner.
I was totally shocked at how good it is - the story line is something we can all relate to - a world that often isolates those who don't "fit in".
Fionn (Ned) and Nicholas (Connor) are absolutely relatable in their roles, and I loved the cameo by the English Teacher. While some may critique the ending as "predictable", but IMO any other type ending would destroy this movie. After the emotional roller-coaster of the film, we NEEDED that ending.
Thoroughly recommend it for all - especially for those who think that anyone who is different is a lesser individual.
