Sicilian Ghost Story (2017)
Excellent Movie and Absolutely Captivating
This was great movie through and through. I watched this film a few days ago and I am still processing it in many ways. Some reviewers are upset by the lack of actual 'ghosts' which I don't understand. I guess some people have no imagination.
Creed II (2018)
This Movie is for Girls - RIP Rocky
This movie was lame and disappointing. I am a huge Rocky fan and really enjoyed Creed, I also consider Rocky 4 to be one of the greatest films of the 20th century, so needless to say I was super excited to see this film.
I was expecting to see the Dragos come calling from Russia and Creed and Rocky dive head first into 90 minutes of action. Instead Adonis is supposed to be conflicted about fighting Drago and Rocky tells him not take the fight. Why? I am still not sure. We're never offered a real reason and given the back story that's amazing. I felt like the movie was trying to just shove internal conflict and emotion down my throat from the very beginning. You'd think Creed would jump at the challenge and we'd see awesome montages, fighting, wins/losses, whatever. Instead the story drags, it's predictable, and even the montages suck.
Creed and his girlfriend get engaged and conceive a baby while still living in their crappy apartment in Philly. I couldn't help wondering how the Heavyweight World Champion and his trainer Rocky are still broke. She has the baby (who cares), and the baby might be deaf (who cares). They take the baby to get hearing tests (who cares) and Creed cries (who cares). This goes on for like 40 minutes and basically ruins the movie.
The only redemptive part of this movie was that Dragos were cool and fun to watch and of course Stallone is always fun to watch as Rocky. I was surprised to see Bridgette Nielsen which was also a treat. But in the end this movie was so bad that I couldn't help but cheer for Viktor Drago and hope that Creed gets killed in the ring just like his father.
Gotti (2018)
Why Mess With A Great Story
John Travolta plays John Gotti brilliantly, but I'm left to wonder how you screw up a story that's basically already perfect for a movie. Also this comes off as self serving to John Jr and a little shady for other reasons.
This is Travolta at his best as he plays Gotti perfectly down to his speech, body language, and mannerisms. John makes the movie fun to watch and without him this would be one star review. I also have to give credit to the man whom played Neil Dellacroce as he too did a wonderful job, and he and Travolta have great screen chemistry. Aside from that the screen play left me with more questions than answers.
The producers messed with a great real life story that should have been portrayed exactly as it happened. When Gaspipe Casso was shot in real life he was ambushed in the middle of the day while sitting in his car eating an ice cream cone and listing to the radio. That could have made a great scene and been a highlight of the movie. Why change that to a shifty middle of the night meeting where you instantly know whats going to happen? This is probably the most glaring example but the film is loaded with these moments. Where were the government filmed walk and talks? Why not get into the jury tampering of the first three trials? Why take exhibits from FBI recordings and not use them in the context that they actually happened? John Gotti going on and bragging that its "La Cosa Nostra until the day I die..." is a famous FBI tape, why use that as an off the cuff remark completely out of its original context? Instead we are stuck watching boring scenes like when John Jr met his wife, his lame wedding, and a stupid amount of time focused on Gotti Sr's funeral cars along with idiotic messages from well wishers.
I was also left to wonder about some of the name changes. It seemed to me that most of the real names used were for those that are now dead. As for the living they changed Mikey Scars name, who would eventually reach boss and then become a government informant to Rudy Scars. Frank Locasico, Gotti's consigliere is still alive and sitting in prison after going down at trial with Gotti, but they changed his character's name to Bobby Borielo and cut him out of the trial. I sure hope this wasn't to stiff an upstanding guy like Frankie Loc and his family on any royalties.
Terminator Genisys (2015)
If you like turd sandwich's
Terminator Genesis comes together like turd sandwich.
The main ingredients to this entree are a terrible chemistry between Reese and Sarah Connor coupled with plain old bad acting this it becomes just unbearable to watch. The writers completely change the character demeanor of these two. John Connor is played by Jason Clarke who is a terrible actor to begin with, and before you know it they're just scooping hot turd onto the bread. The script writing feels lazy and not very creative. Of course the plot is stupid but if there is one hint of taste on turd-which it's that the way the Terminator may have aged makes sense and of course Arnold plays the character brilliantly. Regardless I consumed the whole sandwich and it tasted like poop.
Alien: Covenant (2017)
A Prom Night Abortion, Never Should Have Been Attempted
I don't know who thought this disaster was a good idea but someone needs to be held accountable. The plot has so many holes that you can't even attempt to believe someone thought that this would work. But the question really is; if David killed all the Engineers and created facehugger and Aliens, then how did the Engineers later crash with a ship full of eggs on LV426 and terrorize in Alien and Aliens? This can only be answered in whatever stupid sequel that I'll probably watch because apparently I hate myself.
The Road (2009)
I Found Myself Cheering on the Cannibals
I just watched this mess on Netflix, and after so many years of being an IMDb fan, I was finally compelled to write a review in hopes that others won't suffer the way I just had.
There is so much wrong with film, and so much of it has been covered by other reviewers that instead of piling on I'm just going to cover what I think is worst thing about this movie, and that is the lead characters. The Man is a wimp and a poor excuse for an adult, especially one in a post apocalyptic scenario where cannibals are everywhere trying to eat you and your child. One would think that after a decade of this hellish life, and probably eating a few people in that time yourself, since food is so scare, that he'd be a little tougher.
The Boy who is 11 acts like he is three years old. He whines his way throughout the entire movie while The Man seems to enable this by physically carrying him around like a sack of potatoes and speaking to him like an infant.
This is one of those special movies where before you know it you're cheering on the bad guys.
