It's no Spirits Within But...
22 November 2005
Though an undeniable spectacle for both the eyes and certainly the ears, I found that Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children was flawed in the following ways. First of all, the film is absolutely inaccessible to a Final Fantasy outsider (though I am certainly not a member of this ignorant and unfortunate group of people, 1997 was a year that changed my life). The story's intention is to pick up where the game left off, but more and more I found myself pondering the queries that were yet unanswered from the game. I could not even fathom watching the movie without playing the game, I'm sure those lucky few who were treated to the viewing at that Italian film festival before the movie was released were a little confused but still probably blown away by the sheer power of action and music that Advent Children wields. My second major problem with the movie is the lists of potential voice actors for the US release, I mean, Lance Bass, that's just retarded. If you haven't played this game, you're probably not reading anymore, but if you happen to be, turn off your computer, go to Game Stop and drop the $13.99 for this incredible game and then you will undoubtedly enjoy this movie as I did. If you want to save your money, then I pity you, not only because you never got to get out of Midgar, never shed a tear as Sephiroth kills Aries, or never threw your controller against the wall as the Ruby Weapon tears you a new one, but I also pity you if you have to see this movie. My recommendation to all you newbs out there, smoke a bowl or two and then pop in Advent Children and you'll have a great time.

Slackers (2002)

Cool Ethan

Though there is an inherent stupidity in every teen/college comedy, this particular one shines as a goal for your Road Trip II's and Van Wilder spin offs to aspire to. The great thing about this movie is Jason Schwartsman. Cool Ethan is the poster-child for unrequited and creepy love and adoration and is as convincing as a love-starved weirdo in this movie as he's ever been in his other movies, in which he also happened to be a love-starved weirdo. Anyway, there are other redeeming elements in this movie which make it a classic. The use of music such as the choral Ace Of Bass rendition or the piano scene in the Denny's are dead-on great. When Ethan sings that song at the end, his character sticks in your head for the next week. In summation, I think that Slacker is definitely worth renting or seeing for free. Maybe you shouldn't buy it on the off chance that the cookie-cut, run-of-the-mill love story doesn't tickle your fancy, but it's an otherwise funny and interesting movie and worth the time.
