Marcella (2016)
Can't believe the rating is so high
I wasn't impressed with the pilot but was intrigued enough to give the first season a chance. I'm glad I did because now I can pinpoint why it was so awful.
First of all, not a single character is likeable, and the protagonist isn't even an antihero, she's an absolutely awful and unethical cop. She only appears smart because the characters surrounding her are written so dumb. She fits the "personality disorder" profile she gives for Cullen to a T, and turns into what she hates in the end. The writers clearly don't understand the reality of personality disorders, and just based the writing on the DSM definition. Jason is truly awful, too. And does so many ridiculously dumb things. No way he would be smart enough to be successful at that high power job. The only character remotely kind, Mark, is made fun of and dismissed the entire season.
And don't get me started on the massive and important plot holes that only stand up in the first watch because the writing overloads your brain with unnecessary characters and stories. And the number of average looking awful white dudes is so ridiculous I couldn't keep them straight. And that's about half the cast.
I read summaries/reviews for seasons 2 and 3 to see if it would be even more of a waste of time, and it looks like the writing just gets worse so I didn't bother.
Black·ish: R-E-S-P-E-C-T (2018)
One of the best episodes
The exploration of the double standard with sexuality and virginity in this episode is Top Notch. And they did it with humor and without being explicit. Teens Junior's age have always had sex so it is an entirely appropriate topic for a family show with a teen that old. Many episodes focus on complex topics, and it makes sense this is one of them. If we want to do better for future generations, and improve outcomes (lower pregnancy and STD rates) for teens having sex we have to talk about it. Abstinence only has and will never work.
The side story was also amusing, with a satisfyingly ridiculous conclusion. I love when they show the connection between Diane and Grandma Ruby.
Psych: 100 Clues (2013)
Fav episode!!
Clue is my all-time favorite movie and game, and Psych is my favorite show so I had high expectations going into this episode. I believe they knocked it out of the park. The number of references to Clue are so many you can't even count them all!! To name a few (w/o spoilers) the singing telegram, the drive up to the house, gus stepping in animal poop, the actress who played Miss Scarlett wearing a red dress/lipstick/nails, the host initially being unknown, the first 3 non-Psych characters to arrive are all original actors of Clue, the chandelier, splitting up to search the house. But I also love the added Psych flavor.
The Librarians: And the Trial of the Triangle (2016)
Pretty great
I don't know why the other reviewers hate this episode so much. I thought it was enjoyable with laughs as well as heart. Flynn gets a needed wakeup call, and I like how they did it. Some good character and relationship development which has been needed in the series. I also liked how the actors got to play multiple roles. I think it's actually way better than the carnival episode before it (although that has some great cameos).
I thought the first 2 movies were pretty awful, but I really like what they have done with the story in the TV series. I am a fan of Dean Devlin and Christian Kane, so that is definitely part of why I like the show better.
