Yedinci Kogustaki Mucize (2019)
Beautiful
I haven't seen the original and did not know what to expect. This is a truly heartwarming and heartbreaking story, well played, subtle but obvious, unexpected yet expected. But most of all a story of the love between a devoted father and the daughter who adores him. And how love and kindness rubs off.
Perhaps there is an overuse of melancholic music but it doesn't make this film less worth seeing. If you are scrolling Netflix for something to watch, I'd definitely choose this over the typical Hollywood Action-packed 12-to-the-dozen film. At least this one triggers your emotions, one way or the other.
Tata muta muntii (2021)
Interesting
Had this been a Hollywood production he would have found his son alive, carried him down the mountain on his back to be welcomed by massive applause upon the return. Luckily, this is not a Hollywood film. Rather a narrative on, in a specific situation, what power and corruption could look like in non-democratic countries where men in power use state resources and property as if it were their private possessions. But it also poses the question what you yourself would do in the exact same position. If you have the opportunity to use public means to try and save your child, would you not take it?
Memory (2022)
Lame plot and bad acting
I must admit I had low expectations when I pressed play on this one. Yet another story created to let Liam Neeson use his low and intimidating voice. And to my surprise, it was even worse than I anticipated... Is this how Neeson is being punished by Hollywood for his comment with racial implication in 2019? I'm in no way supporting what he said, I thought it was awful, but surely, there must be other ways to make use of Liam Neesons talents than this? A forced and rather dubious plot, catastrophic acting from just about everyone accept for Neeson and Guy Pearce (what has he done wrong to be casted in this?), you almost get the feeling of the acting ensemble just roughing it out in the hope of it to be over as soon as possible. The police detective portrayed by Ray Stevenson surely has to be purely ironic?! And the actor playing Nussbaum I fear rehearsed his performance in front of the mirror thinking that merely by giving the character a gruesome facial expression, it would play itself. I don't know, he might be a really good actor, but surely, not even he himself can be satisfied with his performance here?
Don't see this, if you can't get enough of Liam Neeson taking out his revenge on bad people, watch Taken once more or even The Marksman. It's time spent much better than watching this.
The Wonder (2022)
Average movie but Pugh shines!
I don't mind the slow and dark tempo, I actually quite like it. But that's probably since Florence Pugh is in practically every frame of this film. She really is an enigmatic and brilliant actress, the star of her time. The only other actress I can come up with, whom I would watch regardless of the quality of the film, is Olivia Coleman. I think that says it all. See it, if for nothing else at least see it to experience a great actress. And there, for some reason, is a minimum required amount of characters to these reviews, I might add that the film also has a nice aura, I like the scenery and the sense of desperation it brings.
The Lost Daughter (2021)
Olivia Colman shines!
I would have probably rated this film a bit lower since it is kind of slow and boring at times, but the amazing Olivia Colman is electrifying...as always. It has been pretty lonely for Dame Judi Dench in that vacuum between Merryl Streep and all the other talented actresses of the world , but now she is joined by Colman. What a talent she possesses! I do have to say the acting in the film is really good overall. And the film does leave you with some important questions like we it is more stigmatised for a mother to leave than for a father. The film is clearly worth your time even though a bit on the slow side.
No Time to Die (2021)
Surprised
I did not expect that. My favourite film of the "new" bond series has always been Casino Royal, still is, but this came unexpectedly close. It takes its time, granted, but it's also a story worth waiting for. I've always preferred Sean Connery as bond but I must say, now when his time as bond is summarised, Daniel Craig was right there up with him.
It was also refreshing that the series ditched some of the male chauvinism and sexism that for way to long has been the trademark for James Bond. They do make a self-ironic reference to it in the scene with Ana de Armas and Craig which I found rather silly to be honest. But the idea of Bond having a family and a strong wife/mother at that, is...refreshing. A fitting end.
Svart krabba (2022)
This could have, and should have, been ok, but it stinks
I really don't understand why one does a job half heartedly? Then it's no point in doing at all. To be fair, there are some good actors in this film, doing a good job (there are some really lame performances as well though), but if you're going to tell a story, why don't do it properly? There is no background story, no narrative, no clear purpose and you constantly ask questions like: Who are the enemy? How is this mission going to end the war? What war? Why do they need to skate to get to the base? Why do they even need to go there? Why are there enemies all over the ice? And why are normal citizens all of a sudden trying to kill the them?
You can't just throw some good actors into a pot, add some nice sceneries, some dramatic music, stir it up and think you will create a tasty stew that people will appreciate.
You also need a story and the ability to tell it.
The Lodge (2019)
Why?
Why did I watch this? Why was it made? Why does anyone want to be in a movie like this? This was really disturbing, cruel and horrible. And not in the way you want it to be. I wish I could I unsee it.
Ozark (2017)
I'm addicted!
I don't follow a lot of series but this is, if not the best (it probably ties with La Casa de Papel) then at least one of the best series I've ever encountered. I mean, it's twisted, granted, but in a good way. I love the characters, the totally dysfunctional family, the crazy people, the scenery. And I'm no fan of Jason Bateman but I must say he plays his character, the down toned, emotionally suppressed, calm, calculating, problem solving family provider, brilliantly. And Julia Garner who plays Ruth Langmore, she is absolutely fantastic!! I love this!
Låt den rätte komma in (2008)
It was alright, not more
Judging from the reviews here I suspect that this film is reviewed in comparison to other Vampire-movies, which are usually crap. But if we view it as a film in general, without comparison to other films in the same genre, I can't fathom the high score. Sure, it is an impossible love story with a twist. But the characters, apart from Eli and her father, are really stereotypical and it's really a slow burning film. But sure, the melancholy suits it and it's nice that it's played out in the eighties. Altogether worth watching but don't let the reviews here raise your expectations too much.
Don't Look Up (2021)
Disappointing
Perhaps my expectations were set too high given the impressive cast, but this was sheer disappointment. Sure, Leo always delivers a good performance but the characters had no nuance, they were so simple and obvious. Not even Merryl Streep could save the poorly crafted caricature of the President, and the same goes for the role of Jonah Hill. And please, don't get me started on the Steve Jobs-character. Political satire is important and so is portraying man's egoistical and self destructive nature, the imbalance between those who have and those who have not, the mistrust in our leaders doing what's best for us and not only for themselves, but it can be done with so much more delicacy and craftsmanship than in this case. A sloppy job to say the least and a shame on such a brilliant cast.
Bad Boys for Life (2020)
Why?
I actually could not watch this to the end. It's just too embarrassing and lame. Bad, halfhearted acting, a ridiculous plot and humour that belongs in a museum. Life's to short to watch movies where absolutely no one has put their sole in to it. Do something meaningful with your time instead.
Don't Let Go (2019)
Great Idea but some loose ends and holes in the plot
I really enjoyed this movie. It is exiting, it's a good idea for a script (sure it has been done before, I know), there are some decent actors involved. But for me to rate it higher I would have needed some more answers and a more convincing plot. For instance, who is responsible for the killings and why? Why does the Captain need to die and who is the internal affairs guy they are supposed to meet in the end? If the Captain was not one of the bad guys, why didn't he react on the suspicious rendezvous? And in the end, how did Ashley explain what had happened to Jack? So a lot of unanswered questions, but still, a movie worth seeing.
Midsommar (2019)
If there ever was a movie I would want unseen, it's this one.
I realise the purpose of this film is to shock you and disturb you, but the cinematography and scenery's can't hide the fact that I wish I never had seen it and I'm upset with myself for watching it to the end. The detailed violence was also uncalled for, the type you would find in a low budget, straight to video type of film. It's slow, the script is badly written, the characters are...well for lack of a better word, flat. Unless you are a hard core fan of films that is utterly disturbing, your life is to short and to important to spend on watching this. Oh, and just so you know, midsummer in Sweden is most Swedes favourite festivity of the year, with dancing around the pole, spending time with family and friends, eating, drinking and playing games. Period. :-)
John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum (2019)
A buffet of headshots, quite literally...
What is the point of this movie? It is two hours of Keanu Reeves running around and shooting people in the face from close range. I've never seen so many examples of pointless glorification of violence in my life. It must be well over 150 people that John Wick alone kills. I admit, I saw the first two movies so I should have known what was coming, but it's just too much. It made me sick. And the plot is ridiculous. I could not watch it to the end and I wouldn't recommend anyone to see it, regardless if you are a fan of action movies (which I am) or not.
Lawrence of Arabia (1962)
They just don't make movies like this anymore!!
Sometimes what is not said is equally important as what is said. In today's moviemaking everything seams to need to go fast, with heavy dialogue and quick camera shifting. We have forgotten the power of letting the story slowly evolving, taking its time, lingering on every syllable or frame. Peter O'toole acts whit his mimic, his posture, his gaze and I find myself blown away and not once did I think about the length of the movie. This is true art and immensely enjoyable. And the powerful and enigmatic performance of Anthony Quinn is, as always, an experience in itself!
Catwalk - Från Glada Hudik till New York (2020)
A roller coaster of emotions that leaves no heart untouched
I don't think I have ever been so emotionally involved in a film ever before. I cried, I laughed and I was overwhelmed by the warmth and the sheer brilliance of the characters. It is an important statement that everybody counts, everybody deserves to shine and no one has that right to label any human being.
Motherless Brooklyn (2019)
Old school Film Noir marinated in a Jazz vibe
I can't really understand some of the negative reviews here. This is a really well crafted film that makes you want to take a drive on memory lane and relive some of the old Private Eye epics. It has a perfect blend of storytelling, smooth jazz, thugs with guns and a girl that gets the hero on his knees. All told in a tempo that, after a speedy start, and accompanied by the late night vibes, feels just right. And I rather enjoyed the performance of Edward Norton, in contrary to some of the other reviewers on this site. But most of all, I enjoyed the feel of it.
Rebecca (2020)
Dissapointing
I was unaware of the fact that this was based on a novel and had been produced once before by Hitchcock, starring Laurence Olivier. Had I known I might have skipped this and watched that version instead. This was indeed a disappointing plot. I found myself expecting some devilish twist, turning the obvious upside down, but no, this plot is just as predictable and expected as you think it is as it is played out. I quite enjoyed the performance of the two female characters but other than that, it was quite a poorly and sloppy production.
Get Out (2017)
Really promising start and then all downhill
I didn't realise this was an award winning film until after I saw it, but I did see the IMDB rating, so my hopes were up. And it was off to a promising start, even though you realise, almost instantly, that the girlfriend is playing a role. Whenever a film works overly hard to deceive you in one direction it really has the opposite effect, it reveals the very same secret it is trying to hide. But still, I enjoyed how the plot played out. But then after a little more than half of the film, it spirals into some poorly crafted slasher film. I would not recommend this, there are a lot of better ways to spend a couple of hours. Still gave it a 5 because of the first half.
Kalifat (2020)
Strong, gripping and terrifying!
I'm no expert on what the situation looks like in real life today but this series really shook me. It was brilliant but left me with a feeling of nausea. It crawls under your skin, especially the part of the story that takes place in Syria. The acting is in some cases a bit shaky, except for the actors playing Pervin and Hussam, they were absolutely amazing!! I watched all the episodes in one day, I didn't intend to but it really got me and I couldn't stop. This is going to be one of the more gripping series you will see this year.
6 Underground (2019)
Seriously?
Ok, I am aware this is not a serious movie nor does it claim to be. But all it contains is an offensive amount of over violence, lame dialogue and a stupid, cliche plot.
I know RR is known for his childish humour and charm, and it is normally kind of cute. But here it's only over obvious, misplaced and annoying. It gets a 2 because, hey, it's still Ryan Reynolds, but I can't believe I actually watched this to the end. So that's something I guess...
There are way better films, with Ryan Reynolds in them (Deadpool for one) to watch. But if you are in to these kind of films, epileptic, with a budget that could end poverty in the very same (fake) country from the movie; sure, go a head.
Collateral Beauty (2016)
Simple, yet touching
A fantastic ensemble and a touching story. I really enjoyed watching this movie and as a father I cannot imagine anything worse than losing a child. But it's more to this movie than that, see it!
