The Marvels (2023)
Such a letdown...
The Marvels is a disappointing and poorly executed sequel to the 2019 hit Captain Marvel.
Despite having a talented cast and a promising director, the film fails to deliver a coherent and engaging story, and instead resorts to cheap jokes, bland action scenes, and a bizarre musical number that has no place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The film follows Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) as they team up to stop a Kree rebel named Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton) from using a pair of ancient artifacts called the Quantum Bands to destroy the universe. Along the way, they encounter Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Prince Yan (Park Seo-joon), and some familiar faces from previous MCU films and shows.
The main problem with The Marvels is that it tries to do too much in too little time. The film is only 105 minutes long, which is not enough to develop the three main characters, their relationships, their motivations, and their arcs.
The film also suffers from tonal inconsistency, as it shifts from serious drama to slapstick comedy to sci-fi spectacle without any smooth transition. The film also lacks a clear villain, as Dar-Benn is a one-dimensional character with a vague plan and a weak motivation.
The film also wastes the potential of its cast, who have little chemistry and charisma on screen. Larson, who was excellent in Captain Marvel, is reduced to a bland and boring hero who has no personality or emotion. Parris, who was a standout in WandaVision, is sidelined and overshadowed by the other two leads. Vellani, who was charming and relatable in Ms. Marvel, is annoying and over-the-top in The Marvels. The supporting cast is also underused and underdeveloped, especially Park Seo-joon, who plays a love interest for Carol but has no relevance to the plot.
The worst part of the film, however, is the infamous dancing/singing scene, which occurs in the middle of the film and has no connection to anything else. The scene features Carol, Monica, and Kamala performing a choreographed dance and singing a pop song in front of a crowd of aliens, while wearing colorful costumes and wigs. The scene is supposed to be a homage to the Bollywood musicals that Kamala loves, but it comes across as a cringeworthy and embarrassing attempt to appeal to a wider audience. The scene also breaks the immersion and the logic of the film, as it makes no sense why the characters would do such a thing in the middle of a mission.
The Marvels is a huge letdown for the fans of the MCU, and a stain on the reputation of Marvel Studios. The film is a clear example of how not to make a superhero movie, and how not to treat the characters and the actors who play them. The film is not worth watching, and should be avoided at all costs.
Severance (2022)
Did not expect much, but WOW!
The Severance is a show that explores the concept of splitting one's mind into two separate selves: one for work and one for personal life. The premise is intriguing and original, and the execution is brilliant. The show balances mystery, comedy, drama, and sci-fi elements in a seamless way, creating a captivating story that keeps you guessing and engaged.
The cast is superb, especially Adam Scott as Mark, the protagonist who undergoes the procedure after his wife's death. Scott delivers a nuanced and emotional performance, showing the contrast between his work self and his home self, and the consequences of his choice. Patricia Arquette is also excellent as Harmony Cobel, the ruthless CEO of Lumen Industries, the company that offers the severance procedure. She is cold, manipulative, and charismatic, and she has a hidden agenda that drives the plot forward. Christopher Walken is a delight as Burt, an eccentric employee who befriends Mark and reveals some secrets about the company. Walken brings his trademark charm and humor to the role, and he has great chemistry with Scott.
The Severance is a show that will make you think about your own identity, choices, and values. It will also entertain you with its clever twists, dark humor, and stunning visuals. It is one of the best shows of 2022, and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys smart and original TV.
The Social Dilemma (2020)
A very scary movie, regarding the tech companies
The Social Dilemma is a documentary that exposes the dark side of social media and the technology behind our mobile phones. It features interviews with former executives and engineers from tech giants like Google, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, who reveal how these platforms manipulate our behavior, emotions, and attention for their own profit.
The documentary also shows the devastating impact of social media on our mental health, democracy, and society, through a fictional story of a family addicted to their devices.
The documentary does a great job of explaining the complex and often hidden mechanisms that drive social media addiction and influence. It uses clear and accessible language, graphics, and examples to illustrate how algorithms, artificial intelligence, and persuasive design shape our online experience and exploit our psychological vulnerabilities.
It also shows how social media can amplify misinformation, polarization, and extremism, by creating echo chambers and filter bubbles that reinforce our biases and beliefs.
The documentary is not only informative, but also engaging and compelling. It balances the factual interviews with the dramatized scenes of the family, which illustrate the real-life consequences of social media addiction. The actors do a convincing job of portraying the different aspects of the problem, such as the teenage girl who suffers from low self-esteem and body image issues due to Instagram filters, the teenage boy who gets radicalized by YouTube videos and joins a violent protest, and the parents who struggle to communicate with their children and each other.
The documentary also offers some solutions and suggestions for how we can reclaim our agency and autonomy in the digital age. It urges us to be more aware of how social media affects us, to limit our screen time and notifications, to diversify our information sources and perspectives, and to demand more regulation and accountability from the tech companies. It also encourages us to reconnect with ourselves, our families, and our communities in meaningful ways.
The Social Dilemma is a must-watch for anyone who uses social media or owns a smartphone. It is a wake-up call for us to rethink our relationship with technology and its impact on our lives. It is a powerful and persuasive documentary that exposes the social dilemma we face today: whether we will be the masters or the slaves of our own devices.
Braveheart (1995)
Beautiful movie, with an amazing soundtrack
Braveheart is a movie that will stir your emotions and inspire your imagination. It is a movie that tells the story of William Wallace, a Scottish hero who fought for his country's freedom from the tyranny of the English king. The movie is directed by and stars Mel Gibson, who delivers a powerful and passionate performance as Wallace.
The movie is a visual feast, with breathtaking scenes of the Scottish countryside and epic battles. The movie also has a magnificent score by James Horner, who creates a haunting and stirring soundtrack that captures the spirit and mood of the movie. The movie features some of the most memorable and iconic scenes in cinema history, such as Wallace's speech before the Battle of Stirling, his romance with Princess Isabelle, and his final cry of "freedom" before his execution.
The movie is not a faithful adaptation of history, but rather a fictionalized and romanticized version of it. The movie takes many liberties and inaccuracies with the historical facts, such as Wallace's relationship with Isabelle, his role in the Battle of Falkirk, and his use of blue face paint. However, the movie is not meant to be a documentary, but rather a legend, a myth, and a tribute to the spirit of freedom and resistance.
Braveheart is a movie that deserves its five Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director. It is a movie that will make you laugh, cry, cheer, and gasp. It is a movie that will stay with you long after it ends. It is a masterpiece of filmmaking that you should not miss.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
This is the ultimate Marvel movie!
Avengers: Infinity War is the ultimate Marvel movie, a culmination of 10 years and 18 films of storytelling that delivers everything fans could hope for and more. The film is a stunning achievement of visual effects, music, and character development, but the true star of the show is Thanos, the most complex and compelling villain in the MCU.
Thanos, played by Josh Brolin in a motion-capture performance, is the driving force of the film, a mad titan who seeks to collect all six Infinity Stones and use them to wipe out half of all life in the universe. His motivation is not pure evil, but rather a twisted sense of balance and mercy. He believes he is doing the right thing, even if it means sacrificing everything he loves. Thanos is not a one-dimensional monster, but a tragic figure who has a clear arc and emotional depth.
The film does a remarkable job of balancing the huge ensemble of heroes, giving each of them a chance to shine and interact with each other in surprising and hilarious ways. The film is full of memorable moments and combinations, such as Iron Man and Doctor Strange, Thor and the Guardians of the Galaxy, Spider-Man and Star-Lord, and Captain America and Black Panther. The film also pays off many of the threads and themes that have been established in previous films, such as the relationship between Vision and Scarlet Witch, the rivalry between Hulk and Banner, and the bond between Gamora and Nebula.
The film is also a feast for the eyes and ears, with stunning visuals and an epic score by Alan Silvestri. The film takes us to different planets and realms, each with their own distinct look and feel. The film also showcases the power and beauty of the Infinity Stones, which are used in creative and spectacular ways. The film also features some of the best action sequences in the MCU, such as the battle in Wakanda, the showdown on Titan, and the opening attack on the Asgardian ship. The film also has a brilliant ending that leaves us breathless and eager for more.
Avengers: Infinity War is not just a movie, but an event, a milestone in cinematic history that deserves to be seen on the big screen. It is absolutely the best movie in the Marvel franchise, and one of the best superhero movies ever made. It is a masterpiece of storytelling that will make you laugh, cry, cheer, and gasp. It is a must-watch for any fan of Marvel or fantasy in general.
Take Care of Maya (2023)
This will break your heart
Take Care of Maya is a heartbreaking and infuriating documentary that exposes the flaws and biases of the American child welfare system. The film follows the Kowalski family, who are accused of abusing their daughter Maya, who suffers from a rare and debilitating disease called complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). The film shows how the family is torn apart by the authorities, who refuse to acknowledge Maya's diagnosis and instead suspect her mother Beata of having Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a mental disorder that causes a parent to harm their child for attention.
The film is directed by Henry Roosevelt, who uses interviews, footage, and documents to tell the story of the Kowalskis' ordeal. The film is sympathetic to the family and portrays them as loving and devoted parents who are desperate to find a cure for their daughter. The film also exposes the incompetence and prejudice of the doctors, social workers, and judges who are involved in Maya's case. The film shows how they ignore the evidence and opinions of experts who support Maya's diagnosis and treatment, and instead rely on their own assumptions and biases. The film also reveals how the system is rigged against the family, who are denied due process, access to their daughter, and legal representation.
The film is a powerful and emotional watch that will make you feel sorry for the family and everything they went through. The film also raises important questions about the role and responsibility of the state in protecting children's rights and welfare. The film is a must-watch for anyone who cares about justice, human rights, and medical ethics.
Good Night Oppy (2022)
A beautiful documentary
Good Night Oppy is a documentary that tells the incredible story of Opportunity, a Mars rover that defied all expectations and explored the red planet for nearly 15 years. Narrated by Angela Bassett, the film features interviews with the scientists and engineers who worked on the mission, as well as stunning visual effects that recreate Oppy's journey on Mars.
The film is not only a tribute to Oppy, but also to the human spirit of curiosity, perseverance, and innovation. It shows how Oppy became more than just a machine, but a beloved companion and a source of inspiration for millions of people around the world. The film also captures the emotional bond between Oppy and her team, who treated her like a family member and communicated with her through songs, messages, and commands.
Good Night Oppy is a heartwarming and heartbreaking documentary that will make you laugh, cry, and marvel at the wonders of space exploration. It is a testament to the power of science and the beauty of discovery. It is a film that will make you say "Good night, Oppy. Well done."
The Father (2020)
Beautiful and sad
Being in the same situation as Anne, with my mother. I can relate to everything and it was hard to watch this movie. Seeing it from another angle was very intriguing and scary. Anthony Hopkins is just amazing as always and really shows us how confusing this illness is.
As I have lived with this situations for many years, I can easily place my self in Anne's situation and sadness of making the choice of putting your parent in a nursing home due to dementia.
A really beautiful and yet sad movie, with superb actors. I can highly recommend this movie if you are keen to see another angle when it comes to the illness of dementia.
Hackers (1995)
Old classic
This is a oldie but goldie. Watched this when I was a kid and got blown away by it. Now when I watch we can all laugh about it. But it's still a classic movie with a superb nostalgia trip. And the soundtrack is just amazing, great tunes.
O gran camiño (2021)
Quite boring documentary
This documentary is more about people and interviews then nature and the trails itself.
Sure we get to see some few beautiful scenery, but the main focus is on the interviews. And there are alot them.
They have chosen great tails, but they don't do them justice. Since we don't get to see the beautiful scenery of these trails. Just some shots of the nature, but there could have been so much more.
But this documentary focus more on the people on the trails, then the trail itself.
Tales from the Loop: Home (2020)
The best episode!
This was, by far, the best episode in this season. It was so beautiful done. All the way from the acting, the scenery, the music and the story.
They have really captured the essence of Simon Stålenhag. He is the artist behind this concept and have done superb illustratings that captures the very essence of the swedish lifestyle in the 80s combined with scifi technology. Just amazing.
And for us living in sweden you can see small details in the series which is connected to our lifestyle in the 80s. Very well done by the team behind this series.
This episode really left one breathless. They orchestrated it all so well. They story was just amazing. How we get to follow Cole and see how his life changes, in a blink of an eye.
One thing that really puzzles me, is the scene when Cole climbs up the tower in the end. In the begining we see Cole and his grand mother in the fields taking pictures with her camera. Then she tells Cole that she though she saw someone on the one of the towers. Was it Cole she saw? And at the end of this last episode, we see Cole taking one final picture with the camera on the tower. Is he taking a picture of him and his grandma in the fields?
Father Soldier Son (2020)
A really touching documentary
This is one of the best documentary I have seen. A really sad one. Filmed over several years, we get to see how the father and his sons change throughout these years after the father gets injured in Afghanistan.
A the beginning of the film the father tells a story of one of his sons friends, that his dad changed after being deployed to Iraq and that he doesn't want to become that father.
And sadly, he becomes exactly that father.
This is a very moving and sad documentary, and very impressive that they managed to film it over several years. To see all their pain, happiness, love throughout all the years.
That this documentary haven't gotten more praise or more awards is beyond me.
I can highly recommend this one.
Sällskapsresan eller Finns det svenskt kaffe på grisfesten (1980)
Probably the best Swedish comedy ever made
This is a cult comedy classic. The best comedy movie ever produced by the Swedish film industry. Stig H. Olsson is a character that everyone in Sweden knows, he's charm and neediness is extremely well done. And this vacation comedy really has is all and will go down in the history book as the best Swedish comedy ever made.
Head Full of Honey (2018)
Beautiful and warm
Like many people said, this is an highly under rated movie. It was a beautiful, warm and visual magnificent production. Lots of beautiful scenery combined with superb music and some great acting.
Sure it has some drawbacks, but all in all it's a highly recommended movie and it will give you some tears.
Don't know why it has such low rating. But I highly recommend this film due to its warmness and touching subject, combined with beautiful music and scenery.
Stan & Ollie (2018)
What a magical and beautiful movie
This movie is a pure gem and it portraits Stan and Ollie with respect and love.
The scenes and costumes are extremely well done aswell as the script. Instead of paying over pay actors they focused on making this movie great by concentration on its surroundings.
And Steve Coogan and John Reilly are just superb, they really work together in harmony and shows us the beautiful friendship between Ollie and Stan.
It really amazes me that this movie didn't win one single Oscars.
But all in all, this is just an amazing movie. Even if you're a fan on Stan & Ollie or not. It's really a beautiful production made with love and care for these two people.
Bob Lazar: Area 51 & Flying Saucers (2018)
This could have been a great documentary
Robert Lazar has a really interesting story, too bad this documentary does a poor job of telling it.
Poorly editing with lots a old footage and fast sequence of random stuff like explosions, rockets and so on. You really get annoyed by this editing "skills". And the narration by Mike Rourke is just plain boring. It tries to be deep and meaningful, but it fails miserably.
When making a documentary you should always show both sides of the coin, not just one side.
Otherwise not much new information is brought forward. Just a mediocre documentary.
First Man (2018)
Superb movie about mankinds greatest achievement
We did not have to high hopes when we went and saw this movie. But boy, we were wrong!
I just loved the 60s feeling they managed to capture with the camera handling, to the closeups and so one. Very beautiful done!
And the visual effects are just spectacular. When we saw this at the cinema, the sound was just awesome! The scene when the Saturn rocket takes off was just magnificent when it comes to the sound and visual effects!
Characters feels very real and Ryan did a great job with Neil. Not much to complain about here.
The music really makes this movie just. Such a beautiful score and the scene when Neil steps out on the moon is just breathtaking. How they manage to capture to loneliness of being in space and far away from Earth, to the beauty and emptiness of standing on the moon.
I don't know why people says this is a boring movie. What do you expect? An action packed movie with explosions and warp drives? We got a glims into the life of an extraordinary human being and NASAs mission to land a man on the moon. I think the movie makers did a good selective part in portraying the greatest achievement of mankind.
If this movie doesn't win one or more Oscars, I will be VERY VERY surprised.
The Man from Earth: Holocene (2017)
A big disappointment, compared to the first one
The first movie had a superb storyline and the setting was cozy and mystical. It was nearly a masterpiece when it comes to the storyline. After I saw the first movie I just sat with my jaw open.
And I must admit that I did not have much expectations for this one. Sadly I was correct. The plot is not even near the first movie. It feels dull, mediocre and never climaxes in any way. A very big let down. I really tried to like this one, but I just couldn't. We never got to experience the mystic, the magical storytelling we got in the first movie. Instead we got a normal, quite boring plot throughout the movie.
And of course the ending. Why, why, why would you do an ending like that? Yes, we got told that they want to continue the story. But come on...
SPOILER WARNING!
Do we need another horror movie about a vampire? An undead "creature" killing people throughout the centuries? No, no, no... just leave this plot as it is. Let it be remembered, at least the first one, for the unique story it has.
