Quite interesting plot, average movie
13 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The movie is similar to the Bourne series in some ways. The plot of the movie is surprisingly interesting/new (adoption of two! children, many different countries/languages, exotic/beautiful locations, quite a bit of business talk that actually makes sense if you have some basic knowledge ...). I guess it is not surprising to know that it was made after a french/belgian bande dessinée, lots of great twists and turns.

What I thought was not great is the acting of the lead character. In my view Matt Damon for example is much more credible in his role as Jason Bourne. I understand the main character here has a sort of John McClane-style larger-than-life approach, but when you are in a scene where your mother has been murdered, you know your father has been murdered, or your brother has deceived you and is killed, you would think there should be some feelings involved, otherwise there is no humor and instead you get a feeling that it is all fake. Even the scenes where he's with women seem fake as well, and especially the last one with the child back in his homeland, which is supposed to be kind of a deep emotion time and yet it comes across as a totally "forced" situation. Some of the action scenes could also be improved, as he is not the best to handle real hand-to-hand fights like Jason Stratham or Jet Li are, for example. I don't think Matt Damon is either, yet the filming of those scenes in the Bourne series was much better, resulting in more convincing scenes. I guess maybe if you spend 24 million euro you have to cut back on certain things that decrease the quality.

A Hidden Life (2019)

Poor film, good story
10 October 2020
Too long, almost a documentary of the Alps, just beautiful scenery but no dialogues. German spoken in the film is not translated, you only get what is said in English, which is pretty poor. Extremely long silences, no eloquence whatsoever from the main actors. Nothing to do with other movies on the Nazi subject such as Downfall or Schindler's List.

Entertaining action film

What I found especially interesting is how ironic it is that he is constantly berated by her daughter for being "a walking disaster", yet in the end she is another relative that, due to her stupidity, prevents him from rehabilitating himself and brings disaster to his life.

Indebted person who pays debts with more debts, his life is a mess, and which ends in tears
16 March 2020
It is the story of a person that in a position of indebtedness tries to solve his monetary problems by running away from the problem, betting more, hoping he will win and repay his loans. Nothing new, by definition already a highly stressful situation. But the stress is increased by the fact that from a personal pov, his ex-wife and daughter treat him with huge contempt, and his relationship with his mistress is also very stormy. So everything in his life is a mess as a consequence of his decisions, and to top it all up the actual dialogue of the movie is constant yelling and swearing. Sadly, everything ends in tears.

I think more than giving a grade to the movie, we should strive to describe with facts what the movie is about, and everyone can decide whether they feel like watching that or not. So a movie about a person whose life is a mess, and which ends in tears

Fun film
8 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It's a very entertaining film, definitely worth watching. The story is very interesting and the actors do a very good job. There is one weak link in the story though (spoiler: why would Fran send Ransom a blackmail note instead of giving it to the police).

Of course I understand everybody is entitled to have an opinion, but when when you rate a movie a 1 or 2, and the average rating by thousands of people is an 8, maybe you should think whether your reviews are actually useful. I wonder whether some people actually vote against their real opinion just to try to do wrong by an actor or a director. Maybe you should try and find a different website and leave for us "ordinary people". It would also save us a lot of time.
