Simulant (2023)
Background noise to my essay writing
The title of my review is honestly pretty self explanatory. The movie attempted to take some sort of slow burn, philosophical, mind bending approach.
But honestly it was just a bit boring.
The synopsis details an "uprising" but honestly, I find it to be a too liberal application of the word, it's more of a temper tantrum if anything.
There are so many missed chances to create anticipation and tension throughout the film however they're so blatantly brushed over. The tension that you expect to be built falls flat and you're left feeling unsatisfied.
I had some hopes going in but honestly there are many "AI uprising" movies that deserve more of your attention.
The Whale (2022)
Can't stop crying...
Honestly I don't really have words.
This movie manages to strip back so many intricate layers and themes in way that doesn't feel clunky or awkward.
Throughout the whole thing I kept thinking, what more can they add. After delving into religion, grief, eating disorders, sexuality, homophobia, constraints of the education system and so on. You would think this combination would come out in an overreaching, overwhelming and confusing way.
But all in all I just felt this almost nostalgic sort of sad. So swept up in Charlie's story that I felt like I really knew him and holding onto the unrealistic idea that he would magically get better. Because throughout all the movie I just kept loving him more and more.
But I knew coming in, this movie wasn't about happy endings tied in pretty bows.
It's about the harsh and raw realities of life, characters who some might say are on the "edges" of society. People who ate hurt, scarred and jaded by life and just trying to get by.
Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris (2022)
Warmth for the heart and soul...
I have see this movie in my recommended titles for a while and never felt drawn to it. Today I thought I'd give it a chance and I'm so happy I did.
There's so many things just so likeable about this movie, whether it be Mrs Harris herself, the wonderful community of loved ones she's surrounded by, or the passion and loving kindness she constantly emulates. Everything about this movie warms the soul and makes you believe in the power of following your heart.
Some may think this is a movie just about a dress, but I think it's a lot more. It's about finding happiness in life, just because you can. There's always an an expectation, especially nowadays, for everything we do to have some monetary value or be for a physical, tangible, cause that other people can understand.
But sometimes life is about doing things just because they make you happy, and to me there is so much more value in that.
Bushwick (2017)
Just angry I watched it tbh
The movie starts off okay, it seems interesting and unique. The plot is okay, and it's an interesting story line, that has a lot potential. However how it's executed just doesn't do anyone any justice. The use of steady-cam is unique and interesting I'll give them that, it's nice to see some difference in POV, to feel as though you are running along side them, however at times it got annoying and seemed tedious, especially when it pans to the door for a few seconds only for nothing to happen, you end up wondering what the actual point was. The acting was subpar, few actors were actually convincing and did the best with what they had, however those who weren't made the film less and less intriguing. Some scenes just made be cringe and want to walk out .
The gun flashes, ugh don't get me started they literally the most fake and pointless thing ever, they're unconvincing and unneeded half the time. Also the useless and eyesore of a scene, where the helicopter is viewing the city, and it looks like it was made with green screen and cardboard cutout in somebody's basement. I understand that low budget means compromise, but if it looks that bad and isn't even essential, cut it out.
The ending is ridiculous, the scene is painful, I honestly felt like I was viewing a paintball game, it's terribly unresolved and you're left angry at how you just spent the last hour or so of your life, watching a movie and it all turned out to be for nothing. You're left terribly unsatisfied and mad at yourself for putting yourself through a whole lot of stress for bugger all.
I'd give the movie a chance, but don't go in expecting oscar winning cinematography and an amazing plot.
