Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God (2005)
too damned horrible to believe!
I thought the first movie was a turd! This one is more of a polished turd. First or all it looks like it was shot with a cheap video camera. It has all of the look and ambiance of a afternoon soap opera. Since this wasn't an indie suppose they had a big enough budget to make it look good. So I can only conclude that you just failed abysmally in this department. Second, just tossing in a few well chosen D&D names does not make it all better. Granted, it is better than the first film, but you had nowhere to go but up after that one! In the end the plot and acting are below mediocre at best, and fail to capture the role playing experience of D&D at all. Please, just give this up. Don't force another piece of D&D crap on us. I have enough trouble explaining D&D to non role players without apologizing for these two movies. But, since I know you don't care or even listen to the hard core role players (the insipid world of Eberron is just one example), at least hire out the next movie to people who actually live and breathe D&D. Not corporate desk jobs who see everything as a marketing tool.
From Venus (2005)
The word "cool" doesn't do it justice!
From Venus has the coolest vibe of any low budget flick I've ever seen. You always have to cut "real indie flicks" a lot of slack for obvious reasons. They don't have the kind of scratch that the big Hollywood boys throw around like it grows on trees. With that caveat I sit down to watch hoping for a nice few surprises. From Venus knocked me off the couch! This credit card budget movie has an incredibly hip/cool feeling that is the mark of dedication to the art within the limits of what had to be a microscopic budget. So many "indies" just don't seem to capture any kind of film world gestalt that can hold the whole thing together from beginning to end. Venus creates a wonderfully bizarre world that can only be described as the rat pack meets scooby doo. Yolan could easily hand with Frank, Sammy and the boys; and the idiotic heroes, who attempt to foil his plans, owe much to Saturday morning cartoons. I can't fully describe this "vibe" that the movie gives off. Obviously, from other reviews, many get it and many don't. Let's just hope you're one of those who is receptive to this cool/hip vibe and can relish in a true underground masterpiece. Turn off the lights, sit back, and from the beginning director's intro (with the coolest/dirty music anywhere!)let the vibe shake your soul. Oh, and don't turn it off at the credits, you'll miss one of the best parts!
