Babylon (2022)
If la la land was offered bunch of coke at a party
A fun but messy mix of la la land and boogie nights. With a bit of cocaine added in to the mix.
Good:
-Amazing jazz score by Justin Hurwitz.
-Great acting from everybody, with the scene stealers being Margot Robbie and Tobey Maquire.
-Those montage sequences "chefs kiss" (aside from the ending)
-Probably one of the most epic movies about movies when It comes to scale
- The ending before the montage became really close for me capturing the same magic of whiplash or La la land
- I also really liked some of the darker scenes. Especially one with Maguire. It felt like something from David Lynch or Casper Noe.
Bad/meh:
-The ending loses me after that montage. I though that ending It earlier, would have been a great way of showing how great movies are but also showing how people making them have to suffer for it.
-Sometimes the movie is so vulgar that It feels like an edgy teenager wrote the scenes
-It does have some dull parts. Mainly in the 3rd act.
-Li Jun Li's character felt underutilized
-Movies tone kind of put me off guard. The humor can be really over the top so when the movie does get darker It feels like a scene from a different movie
-The snake scene felt pretty pointless for me aside of getting the two characters together.
Strong 7.
Klaus (2019)
Charming movie for everybody
I would have never guessed that animated movie from Netflix would be my favorite movie of the year so far but It happened.
Klaus is full of charm, great animation, mostly well put together soundtrack (there are 3 songs in the movie that don't really fit) and amusing humor.
Story is pretty cliched, but I always believe that cliches don't matter if the movie Is so well done. It's so simple yet effective, showing what kindness can do. My only problem with the story is the liar revealed trope. I have no problem with the other tropes Klaus has, but that one was truly lame and every movie should stop using it or do something a bit more creative than have a characters be annoyed for few minutes. Luckily It doesn't last long and the movie can end on a great note
I truly believe that almost everyone can enjoy this. My favorite movies so far in 2019 have been pretty depressing so It's really refreshing to see a movie this wholesome
Final score light 9 to strong 8
Ad Astra (2019)
Breathtaking atmosphere and visuals
I have a strong feeling that those are the things that made me really like this, because the story has some wasted potential. I really liked what they were going for with Brad Pitt's characters. The idea that this almost robot like guy is worn down throughout the movie could have been really great emotionally, but It doesn't go further enough. Same thing with his father. We only hear some stuff about him throughout the movie, main character misses him and then when Brad Pitt and Tommy Lee Jones finally meet there's a pretty anticlimactic resolution to their story. Those things aren't horrible but if they would have been stronger than this whole movie would have been amazing.
Thing that carries Ad Astra are the amazing visuals, breathtaking atmosphere, great small details in the world and a really great soundtrack. I'm the type of guy that can love movies that have a pretty bare bones stories if the movie has a great atmosphere and this one certainly does have It. loneliness of space is perfectly created here and the world feels really realistic, at least to me.
So would I recommend this movie? I don't really know. Even If I can look past the pretty weak story because I love the visuals and the world so much I can understand that many other people just want to have fun while watching a movie or at least shed a few tears. This movie will not make you do any of those probably but It did make me think while watching It that even If this movie is far from perfect It just makes me feel so happy what movies can achieve. If you want to see more big budget original movies I would recommend at least renting this and seeing if the movie can suck you into its world like It did for me.
Final score light 8 to strong 7
PS: Sorry for my bad english
