Einstein on the Beach (2014)
4h 24m of Philip Glass & etc.
I have used a 10 star valuation simply because there are no apples to compare with these oranges. Even if you love Philip Glass, theater, minimalism, and startlingly unique performances, watching this production straight through may be a challenge. I hereby give you permission to read a book, catch up on your correspondence, play chess, update your blog or otherwise engage in activities which do not demand your complete attention while enjoying this performance. If you have two screens, set the other to loop KOYAANISQATSI or LA ROUE or run a playlist of your favorite silent films. Use your brain for something besides a sponge. Happy hunting.
Isolation (2005)
O'Brien's Classic is better than "Life"
O'Brien's "I Am Not a Serial Killer" is an excellent movie, but in my estimation "Isolation" is his master work. "Serial Killer" is based on a novel by Dan Wells, but "Isolation" is O'Brien's own story and screenplay. Casting by Wendy Brazington offers more talent per square inch of frame than any 4 standard issue genre horror movies you might care to name. Clearly, O'Brien squeezed each monetary budget unit until it begged for mercy. Cinematography, editing, narrative pace, art direction, production design, set decoration ... it's a blooming perfect storm. "Isolation" is highly underrated, and apparently only got love from the genre festival circuit, which is a shame. This is simply top shelf next level film making irrespective of genre. For my money, "Isolation" easily tops Daniel Espinosa's large caliber "Life" in terms of visceral abuse; and I am a big advocate of Espinosa, largely on the strength of "Easy Money." Amazon Prime recently popped "Isolation" into their rotation. I had been wanting to see it again for many years. It is so much better than I remember. Those who know Amazon, know that their streaming service is never dependable, for any reason, for anything. Streaming quality of "Isolation" is meh, but this is one instance in which meh works with the lo-fi grit of the production and stomps stuff like nobody's business.
Don't sleep.
Surprises found in the end credits. Among those thanked :
Peter Capaldi
Butterfly (2018)
Excellent representation
If everyone took a minute to see what happens in this well made drama, perhaps lives would be seen differently and real change could start.
