Stingray: Sometimes You Gotta Sing the Blues (1986)
My favorite episode of Stingray
This episode is my favorite. The theme song is outstanding. Few years ago, I contacted Lois Blaisch and asked her if she ever recorded that song so that I could have it. She was very kind and replied saying that no, she never recorded that song. "A very cool song" as she stated. I am trying to find the soundtrack for Stingray - if it exists - that maybe will have that song.
This episode has a very deep meaning to me. On how sometimes Life has different plans for us, in spite of what we want or dream for ourselves. It talks about personal sacrifice for the benefit of the one who cares most to us... "To be a watcher or a player, a giver or a taker...": "You've been waiting a life time \ even but a lucky break \ hanging on to a lifeline \ that's where you made your first mistake \ ... \ Sometimes you've gotta sing the blues \ a little looney goes a long long way \ Sometimes there's nothing but the blues \ when you got nothing there to loose \ OH! You've gotta sing the blues..."
The Autumn Heart (1999)
I really liked this movie because of Ally Sheedy and the music
Yes, the movie is very predictable and full of cliché's as stated in some of the commentaries.
So what? How many different versions of Cinderella have you seen so far? All cliché and predictable, isn't? In my opinion what is outstanding in this movie is Ally Sheedy's performance, and that is what makes this movie worth seeing. Superb is her acting, particularly in the scene with the final confrontation between Deb and her father.
The music that plays in the background during that final confrontation scene is also really beautiful. Looking up in the end credits, I guess it is called "February", but I could not find it anywhere so far.
National Kid (1960)
Was a great entertainment when I was a little kid in Brazil
UPDATE on Feb/5/2011: Found a Collectors Edition with 7 DVDs (Region 4) at livrariasaraiva.com.br website for R$99.00 plus R$84.00 ship and handling to USA.
Thanks for the other reviewer who mentioned the DVDs.
P.S.: I still think it is way better than Superman... ========== Original 2005 review below >>>>>
Saw this series when I was a child back there in Brazil, where it was a great hit.
Everybody, even the kids who were not Japanese, knew how to sing the songs from this series.
Later on, I heard there was a VHS collection of this TV series that was produced in Brazil but never found it.
Better than Superman, in my opinion.
Being a Japanese descent in a predominantly Caucasian country, this movie made me feel proud of my Japanese heritage.
I do recognize, though, that it is not much of American taste; although people who enjoyed Modzilla and other Japanese disaster movies may appreciate this series.
Or perhaps the Anime fans, particularly of the Star Blazers (Yamato) series, who knows?
