Star Trek: Discovery: Jinaal (2024)
Season 5, Episode 3

Poorly written, poorly acted
12 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This was a very painful episode to watch - I will not go into all parallel stories involving the crew and their new number one, or Saru, or Gray, or... or... you get the picture.

No. The problem is that the central point of the plot is poorly written and poorly executed.

The crew needs to solve a riddle to beam down - but then you learn that Moll was already there (don't ask me how, I didn't write the story).

And then a wild goose chase led by an 800 Trill who is just keen to go hiking? And fire bursting creatures? And then all this talk about how this technology can be dangerous just to give them to Starfleet without even asking how it will be used?

Ohhhhh. Painful. Silly.

This is bad. I'm sorry.
5 October 2023
I'm a huge fan of sci-fi, suspense, thrillers and horror movies. Unfortunately, this movie just doesn't deliver. It has a promising start, I'll give you that, and for a moment I was taken back to what I experienced when I saw Poltergeist and Close Encounters. But after that it is just downhill. Nothing makes sense, end there is just no thrill. You are not left wondering or anticipating the next move. It is just plain silly. Don't waste your time. I awarded it a 3 because of the first 15 minutes, but then the story is just an erratic goose chase... I'm sorry that I wasted my time. Don't waste yours. You've been warned.

Good, but gets sidetracked too much
26 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Now, I tend to agree with those reviewers who says this is a good show. It offers a fresh take on a 'who-took-my-child' mystery, and most acting is quite good.

However, I can't help feeling that the personal trauma of the main character has very little to do with her motivations, and the frequent flashbacks are an irritating distraction. I presume that the director wishes to convey that her past experiences drive her to keep pushing forward, but that is not clear. We only see her pain, and then... the matter of the pedophile ring is addressed in a slopshod manner. Suddenly all references to the video, her flashbacks, all gone? Honestly, all this thing about her rape could have been edited out, and it world not have affected the story. In fact, it would probably have improved the pace.

Great series. Up to ep. 5. Ends with a whimper.
25 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
We really enjoyed the way the story was set - characters were mostly credible, bar some minor details. And then... suddenly nothing else makes sense.

The first issue is with the prosecutor - really? She changes her name and no one recognises her? Wow!

The wife is also great. She endures everything to suddenly give up after all is sorted out?

Real shame. This could have been a much better discussion on the behaviour of predatory males and how power is used against victims, or how difficult it is to know what really happens in a relationship where one side uses his power. But no. Silly ending.

You're bored and you decide to give this a try. Just DON'T!
6 January 2022
Why did I not trust my instincts that were screaming that this was another Shyamalan flop. No, I decided to give it a try and bingo! Horrible. It's not fantasy or fiction, it's just ridiculous. I was led by the idea of seeing people trapped and ageing helplessly. I thought that maybe they're was something to it. There isn't. The movie is just that. People trapped and ageing. Pick something better for your movie night. Trust me.

Star Trek: Discovery: Terra Firma, Part 2 (2020)

Why?
19 December 2020
Why was this episode made at all? What kind of story were they trying to tell? Where is the sci-fi? And the way they used the Guardian? C'mon. The only explanation I can think of is that they needed to remove Giorgiou from the show - either to create her own story or to get rid of the character altogether. The problem is not that this is not Star Trek. The problem is that this is bad storytelling. If this two-part episode has been presented as a pilot, do you think the show would have made it? I doubt it. They only reason they manage to run something like this is that ST has a captive audience. Were this any other show, Discovery would be a goner by now.

Star Trek: Discovery: Forget Me Not (2020)

Tiring

I was just watching Blink of an Eye from Voyager and I realised what the problem is. Basically, you could compress a whole season of Discovery into one or two episodes of the pervious series. Now, to tell you the secrets of a Trill, they need a whole episode. To find a ship, a whole episode. To learn that people are crazy about delirium, a whole episode. You get the picture. In the end, you no longer have engrossing plots, a story worth telling. Now, i understand that the idea is to keep you hooked as if each episode could end in a cliffhanger. You would need superb scripts for that, though, and that's not the case. In the end, it's boring face for a few redeeming scenes.

Brace for a loving arc to please advertisers
17 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I love ST in any form, and will watch it even when stories are not that great. This is the case here. The episode has some great moments, particularly the references to the ideal of the Federation. However, I could have done with the first and last third sections of the story and simply ignored the whole fist fight-miraculous escape-chase scene that bridged the landing on the planet and us finding out about who Book is and what remains of the Federation. This whole section in the trading post added absolutely NOTHING to the story. Also, I can't help feeling that a good part of Season 3 will be devoted to "where could Discovery be?"- that's what the central plot will most likely be. I know that current streaming formats tend to favor long arcs to keep viewers tuned in, this maximising advertising revenues. However, this is unfortunately done at the expense of a good story - as was the case in this episode. Still, we'll weather it - it's ST, after all. Just keep wishing we could have better stories.

The greatest adventure of humankind?
21 February 2019
I had the chance to see an advance screening of the movie in Vienna, during a meeting of the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and the word that best sums it all up is "WOW". It is wonderful to be able to witness all the work that went into a momentous achievement. There is the great moment we all know, the "one step for a man, a giant leap for mankind" moment. But this movie pays a much-deserved tribute to all those men and women who joined efforts to make this possible. Fantastic.
