The Messengers (2007)
A really good horror flick. Highly recommended.
This movie scared the crap out of me. It has a really solid storyline that isn't all that original but boy is it well done. I would say the directors really got this one right. Most of the audience I viewed this movie with last Friday jumped during the very scary scenes throughout the movie. I would highly recommend this movie. It was a really good horror movie. You really have to like horror movies though. If you don't like them you might not like it as its a very very scary movie. I think that you really have to watch this movie closely as its got a very deep message that could be missed. I am a big fan of computer generated effects. and this movie also has the "jerky" effect on some of the scenes, like the ones used in The Grudge. I loved it. I really cant imagine what the people here are taling about when they say this movie sucked.
Dark Water (2005)
Decent story but........
I liked the story here but the overall way it was done was not very good. Some of the scenes were done very well and you can most certainly see the producers previous work in it. But scenes like the one towards the end, in the bathroom, was laughable. When the mother in sitting on the sofa with who she thinks is her daughter, who turns out to be Natasha, when she goes into the bathroom to find Natasha trying to drown her daughter behind a locked shower door, this scene actually had me laughing.
I mean to this point the scenes had been done so that you could see them happening. But come on!!! Anyone who saw this, could you believe the torrents of water coming from the walls and sink?! To me, it was silly. ANd then to have the mother die so she could fulfill the promise of being the little girl from upstairs mother? Nah, I didn't buy it.
And what was with the maintenance guy? Was he involved? They touch on him maybe knowing something but never go back to finish it. Also, what was with the lawyer taking pictures with his cell-phone camera? What was the purpose of that?
In my opinion, there were too many unfinished thoughts in this movie. Too many strings left untied. The movie does a good job of building some tension in the first half, but I felt that the second half, instead of solving things only creates more questions. Questions that NEVER get answered. Like the relationship with Jennifer's mother, it just doesn't ever get made clear. In my imagination, I can put it all together after some thought, but only after trying to piece it all together.
I gave this movie a 4 of 10. Those 4 points were alone for Jennifer Conelly's acting. She did very well and DOES do well in these kinds of tension filled movies. ( Requiem For a Dream, is one example.) Other-than-that the movie falls flat on it's face. It builds tension and asks question without ever really getting to the point.
Less Than Zero (1987)
Great snapshot of a time gone by.
The thing i love most about this movie is that it captures a generation. Whether you were one of the cocaine users, or drinkers, or school students, this movie really takes a picture. I was 18 and just graduating high school when this movie came out and for me the drug life was just beginning. The thing i like about this movie also is that it doesn't trivialize or glamorize drug use. It shows both sides of it. The great heights, the stunning lows. Its honest. And most of all it is realistic with everything it shows you. I give it a 9, a nearly perfect movie.I'm not sure why you have to have ten lines in your comments but I am writing thi sending to accomplish that goal. Enjoy.
