Pulp Fiction (1994)
Pulp Fiction
I absolutely love this movie. It is one of if not the single best movie that I have ever seen. Quentin Tarantino is one of the only directors who can fill a film with meaningless conversations and interactions between characters and still make those meaningless conversations significant to the plot. On top of that Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis, and John Travolta all have exceptional performances and make their characters so much fun to watch. I've seen this movie over 10 times and I would like to see it 100 more times because I like it more and more every time I watch it again. This should be a must see for every movie lover.
The Wizard of Oz (1939)
The Wizard of Oz
This movie is so nostalgic not only for myself but probably for anyone born from 1930 and beyond. It is a movie that every family with children should watch together because of the vibrant and colorful scenes and the playful music. It is and always will be a family classic. In the same breath though it is quite cheesy and goofy. However, I think most viewers would agree that is what makes the movie so enjoyable.
Dracula (1931)
Dracula Review
It absolutely holds up its reputation as not only being a horror classic but an overall Hollywood classic. While it is probably not a film for someone who is looking for "jump" scares it is very creepy and has a dark feel while watching. I also love the sharp contrast between the dark and light in these early Universal films, it adds to the creepiness of them. The tension throughout the film between Dracula and the Professor make it an exciting film to watch through its entirety.
Citizen Kane (1941)
Citizen Kane
Its difficult for a film to live up to expectations when it is often regarded as the best film in Hollywood history but even if you don't see it as the best film of all time it would be hard for someone to tell you it is not an amazing film, even by modern standards. Between the unique camera work and the way the story is told I am able to see why so many people love this movie. Today we are able to see this kind of camera work and this storytelling style in a few movies but I can't imagine going to the theater in 1941 and seeing all of this for the first time, it would be an amazing experience.
The Maltese Falcon (1941)
The Maltese Falcon
This was a beautifully shot noir film, the picture itself was amazing to see. But on top of the aesthetics of the film the story was exciting from beginning to end with all of the twists and turns taken throughout. The audience slowly finds out who the main character really is after they are misled time and time again. It was a very exciting film to watch and a wonderful example of film-noir.
His Girl Friday (1940)
His Girl Friday
I found this film to be a wonderful film. It was an easy movie to watch. There were moments of humor, romance, action, and even some suspense. It had just about everything you could want in a movie. On top of that the female lead was strong-willed and was one of the best parts of the film. This would be a great film to watch if your not accustomed to black and white movies due to the range of genre the film has. There is something for everyone to enjoy.
Young Mr. Lincoln (1939)
Young Mr. Lincoln
I loved this film from beginning to end. It was a great representation of American politics and the legal system in the 19th century. Young Abraham Lincoln was an extremely likable character. While he was a normal person who was able to have a a little fun he was also brighter and more open minded than most of the other characters in the film. With the wonderful representation of a young president and the exhilarating courtroom scenes this movie is a classic for sure.
Scarface (1932)
Scarface
Scarface was a truly exhilarating film to watch. We saw an evil man work his way up the hierarchy of the Italian mob and some how he was still hard to root against. It really speaks to how well the script was written that at the end of the movie I still felt a bit bad for Tony. This movie was so far ahead of its time with the almost non stop action. The plot moves quickly but every thing is clear and easy to follow. Overall I enjoyed this film and am glad I was able to experience it.
