I know I shouldn't
3 April 2012
I know I should not write this review since I cannot made it till end. Yes first time my cinema watching history I deliberately quit the theater and did not watch the whole movie.

I remember screenwriters' strike in Hollywood some time ago, they hold right to do so (take their worth of money) because they are obviously doing very very important job. I wish we as Turkish cinema had some decent screenwriters..

Fetih has got a terrible scenario. Some say doesn't reflect history correctly (Ulubatli and many other parts of history is mainly legends by the way) but my problem is not that, my problem is, scenario is written in a way as if this is not a cinema movie but some sort of Discovery Channel history flick, it's telling everything written in school books of history (correct or not) step by step. This is not cinema, this is not story telling, this is not watchable.

Fetih unfortunately wasted money, hopes and time of the audience in my opinion. But for sure, some people who has never been to cinema (and not intention if it's not for Fetih) goes to cinema for these kind of movies. We saw the same thing happening in movies like Kurtlar Vadisi, Allahın Sevgili Kulu, Ny'ta Beş Minare etc. I think this is a gain for Turkish people as they meet the miraculous silver screen, but also boosts terrible movies.

And last but not least, if this is place for wannabe critic's arena, why should we not write our opinions about terrible movies? Isn't is just we deceive ourselves if we write "hey perfect movie, come and watch", I don't think rest of the world gives a s.hit about Fetih (name of the movie-Conquest) or Faith(name of the sultan)? As we don't know, like or care about Napoleon, Shakespeare etc.

Peace and wisdom be with you! ;)

A lot of flaws in the story but still watchable
5 December 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Yavuz Turgul (the director) and Sener Sen (Ferman) are together again. When Yavuz Turgul literally enliven the Turkish Cinema with the movie Eskiya (The Bandit) in 1996, Sener Sen had proved how high caliber actor he is. Now, maybe due to too much expectation, we're a little bit put off by the flaws in the story line but still enjoyed the movie.

If you asked me what saved the movie I would easily say that acting of Sener Sen and Cetin Tekindor (Battal). Speaking of acting, Cem Yımaz kind of pulled the role and doesn't look odd or incapable but he still has some work to do on this.

The weakest point with the movie is the story itself unfortunately. Yavuz Turgul being both the writer and the director, obviously wanted to make an emotional movie (which always works with Turkish audience) but tried to wrap it with police flick clichés. I don't know if he sees that as his own way of directing; but after 14 years since Eskiya, we see same weak action scenes in Av Mevsimi. And there we can count many scenes that don't fit the bill; like the party scene where Cem Yilmaz signs or agony of the apprentice (played by Okan Yalabik) after each body they confront.

But as I said when you are watching a murder and "who is the murderer" movie, you always questioning the plot naturally. While watching Av Mevsimi we had plenty of "why" and "how"s as well as "hey give me a break!" moments. Battal's fake marriage seems unnecessary and why "he cuts the girl into pieces and then drops one hand on his way" is an unsolved mystery... By the way this cut-off hand almost put into the camera the very beginning of the movie and it looked so fake that rise eye brows of some skeptic movie goers.

So, Yavuz Turgul came up with a hard to buy story but has chosen the very best of the cast and high grade cam-work resulted an OK movie.

Maybe I'm being a bit stingy with 6 points with the movie, but let's say this is a well deserved 6 than easy got 7.

Up in the Air (I) (2009)
8/10
Very American but still good for everybody
21 August 2010
I had chance to see this after a while it's release. But I put stay on the couch amazed with movies' calm and hitting story. Firing people, getting fired? Look on the faces of the people that got fired and their disappointment? Who's gonna pay the bills? I'm a useless? What happened to all my dedication? Questions and questions popping into my mind while watching..

Bingham (played by Coolney) is sure an a..hole. Sorry but he is. But he is also cursed to be lonely. He believes that is his own choice but I think it's just a curse. He got shocked when newbie Natalie (Anna Kendrick) comes with the idea to use the Internet to fire people instead of traveling across the country. I actually expected Bingham to got fired after this Internet thing, but it didn't happen.

But about Alex (Vera Farmiga)? She is a real jack? Having a family with kids but getting layed by man whom she met in the bar or even at airports? She somehow lets the curse carry on him by disappointing him about marriage and attaching with people.

Anyways, whatever side you look at it, Up In the Air makes you think carefully about many things for sure. Superb acting, nice and not pushy direction and a very nice movie about life and choices we make..

Yahsi Bati (2009)

What's wrong with Turkish comedy cinema?
8 January 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Yahsi Bati (beatiful west -- a word play with wild west // vahsi bati) Cem Yilmaz, a great Turkish comedian who was first person to perform stand-up comedy in front of masses. We all loved him, his bright jokes not only makes us laugh but also it's a kind of privilege to get the grasp of it and it feels smarter.

After a great success of his parodies, he came to cinema and it was good if not great with his first movie GORA. The only problem was if you'd watched his stage shows (many of us did that for many times already) GORA did not have much to offer differently. It was funny, it was well thought and the production was OK. But it was still a bit dull somehow.

He continued with very similar comedy movie "AROG" and now it is "Yahsi Bati". In "Yahsi Bati" he is making fun of old western clichés. But he also (somewhat) build his western story around two Ottoman gentlemen who are visiting America in 1900s.

Again we see very good production, nice costumes etc. So what's wrong with the movie? First of first, the movie is pushing a story that is very very hard to buy for the audience. OK, we need to consider every movie in it's context. If your watching LOTR you don't question a troll because they do happen in this kind of world. You believe and get carried away because the director makes you imagine and believe this realm at very first stage of the movie. Yahsi Bati does not have this. Probably Cem Yilmaz had seen this problem and the story is told to us by a todays character. It may have been better if this story telling were more obvious and we get much of the shoe seller and his friends along the movie.

The movie is coming and going at the edges of being absurd to verbal comedy. There are so many scenes that you ask yourself "do I need to believe this sh*t sake of the movie?" Some say it's full of swearing. I don't agree, there is not much swearing and unfortunately these scenes were the only ones that we all laughed.

Again and again, there is no solid story line. You can make a comedy even an absurd comedy but you need to have a good story, period. Things happen so quick or so late and the crack is usually born prematurely. Let's take "indian father losing everything in poker" scene, hey come on I can shoot that scene better and funnier! Cem Yilmaz had better get a real director next time!

Last but not least, an average Turkish cinema goer's profile is very low in terms of cinema. I mean, many see that going to a movie is like a trade, I pay the ticket and you make me laugh, thats it. This is not cinema. This is using the silver screen to sell your stupid show again and again. If you say the silver screen abused so many times before than I say it's a must to object this every time.

You don't lose much if you don't see this movie..

I'm sorry.

Politically correct, cinematography so so..
29 October 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Nefes: Vatan sagolsun (Breathe: Country live forever -- ??)

Again and again I feel compelled to explain so many things to foreigners to make it a little bit easy to understand.

First of first, there is 30 years of ongoing conflict in Turkey between separatist Kurdish guerrillas and Turkish Army. It's estimated that 15% of population of Turkey is Kurdish originated people mainly living in southeastern parts of the country. So, about 30 years ago a separatist terrorist group (PKK) launched terrorist attacks to Turkish military as well as civil people demanding separation and claiming Kurds were discriminated and were taken their human rights. There's been casualties at both sides reaching to thousands over the years. The interesting point is, nowadays there is a political movement to end this conflict, stop terrorism (much like IRA conflict) and this is the main subject of all the news and the political agenda. So this movie somehow hits the theaters on time as the story takes place in a remote frontier force in 1993 when the terrorist attacks took place everyday.

Unfortunately I'm not amazed watching it albeit my expectations were high. Hovewer I think it's part "Full Metal Jacket", part "Good Morning Vietnam", definitely a new "breath" to Turkish cinema (pun intended).

If you ask me a little bit about the plot, here it comes. It's a small Turkish frontier force base located on some crazy cold/lonely/frightening mountain peak. Only handful of soldier sent there to stop any intrusion of terrorists, in fact those soldiers are open target themselves.

Before going any further, it's good to know that in Turkey, the military service is obligatory and at the age of 20 any healthy man required to join the army and serve up to 18 months. If you're lucky, your service could be in a huge military base peeling potatoes or sweeping the holes. But you may also end up that mountain waiting for death. So many soldiers lost their lives in this fashion over the years. So in this base most of the men are basically doing their 15 months service after only 3 months of training as soldier. They all left their families behind, their moms, fiancés, children waiting them with tears in the eye and fear at their hearts.

Captain Mete and his platoon send to this mountain base as reinforcement due to expected terrorist attack. They're also informed that there is a terrorist in that region who were once a medical student, later left the university and became a terrorist and he's called "doctor".

Captain Mete arrives to the base in the darkness of the night, but everybody is at sleep including the watchmen. Moreover we learn that the Captain's platoon were attacked on their way and Captain Mete lost one of his beloved colleague (killed by "doctor"). So with all these agony, he gives his famous speech to soldiers at attention while it's snowing and extremely cold (giving shivers to the audience too). This is actually the opening scene and the most powerful scene of the movie. I believe this scene is even stronger than raid/battle scenes at the end.

So, throughout the movie we see the life at this little remote base, soldiers' touching talks with their families and radio talks between Captain and the terrorist "doctor". This parts of the movie actually little bit stall. Weak character development and very shallow story base puts the audience out. If I'm not mistaken, this is the first cinema movie of the director. He's previously done advertisements shots and video-clips. He blatantly uses the same techniques in the movie. We watch moving clouds, changing filter colors, reflections on window glass etc. But again these all very forgivable for an average audience as the movie is about very much disputed issue. But I also appreciate the director and all the crew achieving this production with such a low budget (about 2 m$). We also see that the director keeps a balanced approach to the political issue as showing both sides' (military and terrorists) weakness. In many scenes we see the Captain questioning the war, talking about his untold love to his wife, talking to soldiers who're richer than him in their civil life (banking people, doctors etc) and questioning putting his life on such a danger as away of living. But we also see Captain Mete's determination to protect the country and fulfill his duty sacrificing everything he owns, including his life. While portraying Turkish army's determined captain, the movie also gives the message that we're on the same boat all Turks and Kurds and this fight is not the right way to go. I think most of the Turks and Kurds share the same thought now.

All the men in Turkey raised with military stories and one day we all do the service. This movie very successfully transfers the unforgettable days of men at service to the silver screen. One strong point of the movie, and this actually caught by audience at first sight, is characters (captain and soldiers) are portrayed very closely to reality. Since almost all the men do the military service, watching the movie reminds us our memories (bitter and sweet :) about the army. Although cast is mostly amateur players, their dedication and performance is noteworthy. We don't struggle to believe their characters but unfortunately the scenario is not so fluent. We need to connect the tips of the story instead being told in a nice cinematographic manner. The movie might also be criticized for being too didactic.

All in all, it was a nice experience to watch this issue on the big screen. It's probably going to be the blockbuster of this year. I believe we'll have more movies about this topic because there are many real stories waiting to be told like this one.

Thanks for reading...

Slumdog
31 May 2009
How can you tell this kind of story without being boring or banal ? This way...

Boyle takes a good script and crafts it into a greater movie. I also felt little bit disconnected with the story, it's reality etc. along the movie. But it somehow kept my attention up.

I doubt if it's a 8 Oscar movie, but I think it really deserves 8 points and worth watching.. It's actually two sides, I think some satisfy their guilt by rewarding Oscars to this kind of movies (and nothing changes for slum people), on the other side, if you get any chance to awaken people about poverty in the World it's better to use that chance.

Body of Lies (2008)

As fair as it gets...
12 March 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Body Of Lies tires to portray rather objective look into issues in mid-east which are pain in the ass for the world last 50 years. Although movie seems to be about individuals and retaliations among them, it tells a separate yet powerful story in the background.

Every flip of the camera from some desert or some crowded Arabic street to lush lifestyle going on in DC, we easily see the source of the conflict. When it comes to bombings, killings no one seems to be innocent. Even though the movie shows it a less dramatic way (Incirlik blast), it wouldn't be surprise to me learn both sides using terrorist attacks to entrench oneself.

Nice movie, a must watch for anyone interested in mid-east issues and good movies.

Mind provocative or...
20 February 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I can easily understand why some people find this amazing. I deeply sorry to see a lot of people who don't give enough thought on religion and live a life wrapped around daily pleasures.

These people, let's call them skeptic's, just don't know what to believe but they are also too lazy to find it out. So, they live in sort of "pagan" life, don't really care about tough questions like "where we came from" or "what happens after death"..

So for those people this movie is like a charm. All the answers they'd love...

But if you give it a second thought you'll see many holes in the script and even it'll look silly.

The movie suggests Buddhism over Christianity. It quietly passes Islam and Judaism. If they never existed, if billions of people not believe in those religions and "if" many many books, schools, scholars have not created tons of knowledge about them.

It just takes the matter so simple, this is not wise..

Simplicity works here!
27 September 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not fan of those prison serials myself. But I still understand this movie looks very much like one of these except it covers a whole story from start to end.

The thing that made this movie to shine is, it's simple storyline. It's so simple that if you think about it everything that happens just can happen in normal life. An unlucky guy gets into prison, he has hard time with ongoings in there. And of course we've got some sort of crazy cop. His family is also having bad time, they run out of money etc.

The director keeps it simple, uses influence of reality of the prison that movie is shot, doesn't delve into characters of event so much but puts on thing after another and keeps us up and watching.

Just good film making, you won't regret it if you watch. And by the way shaky cam works here very well if you ask me!

Çiçek Abbas (1982)

What can be said about this one!
2 April 2008
I actually did not know that Sinan Cetin was the director of this movie. If he could go on making this movies he could have been best director today but apparently he's chosen to be richest.

Anyway, Cicek Abbas very nice window to 70' Turkey where immigration from rural areas to big cities boosted and new suburbs getting created.

Sakir (played by Sener Sen) is the driver and the owner of the bus, he's rude and senseless guy while Abbas (played by Ilyas Salman) is Sakir's helper in the bus and he's dreaming to get his own bus one day.

Abbas also represents the people who came to city in hope to save some money and return back to village, get married to girl he loves and start a better life. Most of them never returned though. Instead they turned the city into a big village.

Many scenes of this movie has a place in people's minds and hearts. This couple (Sakir and Abbas) argue each other all the time but both are very funny, every thing they say crafted well and makes you smile.

The movie gets you to cry some times too like good old Turkish movies. You see and feel the honesty and straight forwardness of Abbas and while he's suffering you're crying easily.

One of the best Turkish movies of all time.

Horribly bad!
2 April 2008
I didn't expect much, my friends told me it was sort of funny, I hired the DVD but it's unbelievably bad.

No script, no story-line, no character development, no logical stream of events, no direction no action! I'm aware its a comedy even an absurd comedy, but that doesn't mean the movie should be rubbish.

I wonder if director and producers of this movie has ever watched any regular movie? If they know a little bit of film making? Main plot is promising, one could shot a really good comedy movie on this story, but you first need to know and obey basic rules of film making. If you jump one screen to another without a reason then you'll have meaningless movie like this one.

I actually understand they shot much longer and while editing had to cut many scenes and at the end it looks like a fish with wings of a bird...

Sling Blade (1996)

Everything is put in just enough, uh uh
29 March 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Sling Blade (1996) I had change to see it 12 years after its release. And I'm glad I did. Sling Blade has got very strong and sensible story first of all. In addtion hat, the director put great effort on producing the environment that story portrays.I think it's the 50's in some calm southern town. However it was a kind of surprise to me to see the contrast between people's lives and the town's calmness. The movie, of course, has got references to small-town small-people figure, but people are so conforming as accepting Karl into their lives for a little town if you ask me.

For a critical eye, movie comes and goes to limits of being banal and cliché time to time, but just stays at the right side every time.

Thornton's play is extraordinary. I rather felt like they found a guy with some mental problems and somehow made him to take a role in this movie. He was that much perfect, I believe. Lucas Black is good too for his age, he looks very strong against all the bad in his life.

Sometimes the story fells like a Stephen King novel where someone is eighter all good or all, bad but showing people with different backgrounds movie recovers itself from this catch quite well.

At the end I thought (like everyone else) God's got an agenda beyond our knowledge and he's got so many ways of doing it... uh uh

City of God (2002)
Please, not that good...
24 March 2008
Well first of all I was expecting much more harsh movie, but City of God only disturbed me at some minor scenes (shooting small children etc.) but even those scenes were not so strongly shot.

It's story is too long and hard to follow, even if you do follow it it becomes boring at the end.

Maybe the problem is, the movie isn't trying to tell us anything but instead it merely shows (at least try to do so) life, crime and stuff at place called City of God. However while doing this, it portrays people (mostly children)too cartoonish, it feels like a tale more than a real life story.

I must admit that I could not make it till the end cause I got bored..

Decent movie.
5 February 2008
Warning: Spoilers
First Casey Affleck, I'd seen him in "Jesse James..." as coward Robert Ford and I thought "hey man this guy is brilliant". Now in Gone Baby Gone, h proves that I'm not wrong.

Second, I really like the movie's easy and close to reality point of view. It frankly portrays Boston and people live in there. If I go there tomorrow, that is I'd see on the streets. I've seen similar neighborhoods before, similar looking people, thank god never witnessed such crime before but I can easily believe that this kinda sh*t do happen.

Patrick Kenzie(Casey Affleck) and his partner as well as girlfriend Angie Gennaro(Michelle Monaghan) are private investigators. But they usually work for insurance companies/banks to find people whose avoiding to pay back their debts and such. One day a little girls gets kidnapped in their neighborhood. Patrick even knows the mother from high school. When little girls uncle and his wife come to Patrick and his partner to hire them to find the girl, Angie doesn't want to jump into the scene first but eventually she accepts it. If she only knew what's going to happen and how it'll change their lives...

Ulak (2008)
5/10
Why and why?
1 February 2008
First of all I'm really happy to see that Turkish cinema has reached international standards in terms of technical features of film making. The movie "Ulak" has very decent camera work, lighting, costumes and scene creation. Almost half of the movie is shot in the night and everything is well done. We can see every bit of the scene yet we're convinced that it's dark. This is not we're used to see is Turkish film making.

Now let's come the movie itself. I'd never seen a Cagan IRMAK(the director) movie before. I did not have any expectations actually. I was very much neutral. After watching the movie I questioned myself and thought about it over and over but I could not figure out what all it was about! There is a promising story but it is very vague. One can get different messages from it or not. Neither I can say who the people are in the movie nor what the era it is they live in. It looks like they are one of the Turkish tribes before Ottoman Empire living in southern parts of Anatolia. But no one can say it is for sure. So, place, characters and the time is not so clear to the audience. Therefore we cannot know what to expect or how to interpret the story.

And my last but not least complaint is, and I think this is the biggest problem of Turkish Cinema, the movie looks much more like a theater play than a cinema movie. Let me say why; most of the cast is coming from theater origin yet this is the least important cause of the problem. It doesn't feel like "Cinema" because it's shot in almost three places, a hand build village stage, a barn yard and some very short outside shots. Acting can be considered quite well if they were on the stage of the theater, in front of the audience. But the acting is much more dramatic than it should. One might say it's epic, but I could not see where the saga is.

So, our directors are so keen to shot sagas and tales but before that they ought to learn how to tell a story on the big screen in a solid manner. But of course, they need to have a solid story and scenario beforehand.

This is acting.
30 January 2008
Warning: Spoilers
The Bucket List is about two man who share the same destiny, dying in six months cause of cancer, but nothing else in terms of life style, economical status, faith or even color of skin! But those two man at the same hospital room, become friends and change each other in a good way while driving to the end of their lives.

Nicholson and Freeman give a real acting lesson here. Both are in the same kind of roles that we're familiar with their previous movies but it doesn't make it any weaker here, they do it because they do it well.

Movie is much more about Nicholson's character. He's an unhappy man. Although being very rich, he is lonesome, pretending to be happy, an peevish old guy. On the other hand Freeman play a guy who has accomplish many thing in his life like making three children to graduate from good schools and secure their lives. But he thinks he did all those by sacrificing his own life and when at the end of the road, he's uneasy, not because of losing his life, but losing a life that has not been lived well.

With all those thoughts in their mind, they decide to do a list of things that they always wanted to do before they die. This journey also takes both of them to places that they did not plan.

I watched it simply amazed, some of the flaws did not bother me at all. I wish they really had gotten to places in real and the conversations at those special places like pyramids, like Tac Mahal was a little bit stronger and deeper. Maybe this is because I hate sgi effects when it's not really necessary. There is also one point left me wondering if Edward Cole changed anything with the business of his own for good? This has been one of the rare movies that made me shed a tear.

With all its simplicity this movie tells you some nice story about life and death.

Low quality of Cinema but it still is worth watching
27 January 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Kurtlar Vadisi - Irak is a B class movie with B class actors. There is no cinematography to talk about, bad acting (except Zane) and terrible directing.

I wish it wasn't that way, because ideas behind the script are so good, and eye opener. Things that are going on in Iraq today, deserves stronger voice, better story telling.

Interestingly, this movie gives messages to all, especially Arabs as well as Turks (and maybe to Americans too).

I hope it changes people's minds in a better way.

Some may argue why there are no "good" Americans (there was one actually, killed by those private force guy), maybe it's because good Americans have no business in today's Iraq...

Here again, a love or hate movie...
21 January 2008
Warning: Spoilers
No Country For Old Man: "what a movie", I wish I could say that.

At this time of writing it's got 8.7 rating here which is very high that pushed me to watch it again closely, read the message boards and some other comments. After doing all of my homework, I'm now pretty much convinced that here Cohen Brothers playing with us (the audience). They must have thought "let's make another movie, it doesn't need to be sound or logical, hey wait it must not be, this way people can argue about it, talk about and it and it shall be hell of a success".

This movie gets it's story from a book which I did not read. Some say they've followed the book very closely, I doubt that actually. Because I think the book must be more deep and well structured, and reader find the meaning in the book which is not in the movie. I'm sure the book's author created more imaginative universe where the reader can relate Chigurh with devil, Moss with regular greedy man and Sheriff is in the middle of the story and old man fed up with life and sort of not pursuing things as he used to do.. So, all the story flows like a charm therefore the reader is satisfied, found some pieces going with his heart and everything is well done (I hope the book is like as I reckon). But the movie doesn't make you feel like this. It didn't for me!

First part of the movie is very well paced, I even did forgive the stupidness of Moss going back to desert to give the man some water. But beginning of the second part everything starts to fall apart. There are so many illogical, unexplainable (even lovers of the movie can't) parts in this movie, most of them are written in the message board and in other comments. What I want to point out here is if you really try hard to put some meaning into it go ahead, but if you're searching anything in it, don't bother yourself because it's empty.

It strangely feels as if Sheriff Bell is actually partnering with Chigurh as at many points Sheriff is avoiding to catch him. He's not going with other investigators, he mentions the cattle gun but doesn't get the trick and pursue it. Sheriff is like no one, he hasn't done anything actually.

Having all this considered, I'm still suspicious if I'm missing anything, but I think it's more like lovers of the movie are the ones who is afraid of saying "the king is naked".

Juno first goes to abortion center but cannot bare it and turns back.

Then Juno and her girl friend come up with an incredible solution, they found a adoption couple from newspaper ads. So baby will goto a loving and caring nice family and everything will be fine. But before that they must tell the situation to Juno's family, her father and stepmother.

Juno does that, and surprisingly her parents take this very calmly. They don't actually comment on this. Juno and her father go to adopting family, they are rich, nice, willing to a have the baby and everything is okay.

Then pregnancy goes on, Juno's belly getting bigger and bigger.

Juno and adopting father interestingly becomes friends. Juno visits him time to time, they seem to have common interests like music, horror movies and such.

On her last visit, Juno and the guy (husband of adopting family) gets real close, I mean they dance and hug. Here we clearly see that Juno is a poor lonely girl, hungry for love, she's seeking love or to be loved everywhere or with everyone. Her stepmother, whose a very nice woman as an stepmother in fact, tells once to Juno after one of her visits to adopting family's husband, "I know you, stop going to him, he's married, you cannot drop by anyones house like that", I think this scene is one of the key points of the movie, should have been more emphasized.

But husband tells Juno that he doesn't actually want the baby, his wife is crazy about having the baby, he gave the ad to newspaper expecting no one to reply. He's not happy with the marriage and he's going to divorce. At this point wife arrives home and Juno leaves their house crying. But couple hours later she comes back and gives them a note which we did not see at that time.

Juno and her stupid boyfriend become friends again, at this point we think they'll have the baby together and (even) they'll marry.

She gives birth the baby, but adopting family, I mean only the wife, takes the baby, because the note Juno left says to wife "I am still in, if you're in".

Then everything is good. Juno and her boyfriend sing a song together and movie ends (I'm not kidding!).

I was really shocked when I watched a TV show about teenage-pregnancy one or two years ago. There were families (mostly mothers), and they say "we should inform our children about safer sex and blah blah .. " But nobody talked about morals. Sex without marriage is bad enough (of course in my believing) but letting your 13 year old kid to intercourse with someone and to learn that she's pregnant must be the worst thing can happen to any parent.

And NO woman (yes she's a women now) can cope with giving away her baby easily. It must be catastrophic for her. Something that will go with her all the way her life. If you take a puppy from it's mother, mother dog cries for a week at least!

As some of other comments said, nice movie about very tough topic, and sometime it feels that movie makes things to look less worse than actually they are..

Poor kid Juno forgive us for laughing at you or what happened to you.

You don't need to be a Polish to understand this
16 January 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I'm always looking at IMDb's best movie lists and this movie is in the list. Although it did not get much votes, average of votes is so high that it got a place in the top list. After watching it I gave it an 8 here is why:

It'a about a middle aged, divorced, very lonely, obsessive and miserable man.

This guy apparently has wasted his life, never found his dream girl, got married to another woman whom he did not love. Missed the chance of becoming a professor, got a job as teacher with low salary and disrespectful students.

He only loves and cares about his son. But he predicts and afraid of that his son will become just like him and have a miserable life.

Those all said, is this all his fault or are the society, country and people to blame is a question we ask along watching the movie.

This movie shows a countries's long-time social problems, pointless politicians, spoiled youth and culture, changing but not adapting social structure and so on. Unfortunately those are not only for Poland but all the countries does have this kind of problems.

So here we have two sides of a man's sad story. One side is his own obsessions, never ending health problems, pressure of his mom and always looking for better and never finding true love dilemma. Second is the weirdness of the society, a harsh criticism of Polish people and funny examples of how stingy, not friendly, selfish they are.

Of course it does have some cultural references to Polish life and history which I could not understand since I am not Polish, but most of the movie is about us, all human beings.

Just give it a try, I'm sure you'll find some similarity to your life.

What can I say ?
15 January 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I'm always skeptic about eastern movies because I'm too used to American (I mean Hollywood of course) or European point of view, sense of humor and understanding that eastern thinking usually feels naive.

This movie is sum of all those = very good acting, good work of film making, nice scenes, quite decent story telling... Technically perfect.

But subject of it, things it tries to tell are not very clean or acceptable for average western movie goer.

I don't want to bring it to east-west debate/comparison here, I'm an eastern myself actually, but the thing is that the movie tells important things that are not important. It strives to make us believe something foolish, we accept it for sake of the movie and wait to see what will happen and nothing happens. Main concept, prison, all the plan and many things in the movie are unreal and non-logical.

There are thousands of men in the real life doing 15-20 years of imprisonment and when they go out they don't attack to first woman they see (some of them might do :).

Bad guy says "I raised your daughter from the age of 3 to this age", is this easy to buy for us? What kind of wacko plans this kind of "revenge", puts one in to very special prison (private prison ?? ), waits for 15 years ?

Bad guy wants to take the revenge, but obviously our guy didn't know that the girl was his daughter so this is not the same thing bad guy did with his sister, they knew everything. At this point what the movie suggests is not moral in any country or community I believe.

So, in general, movie keeps your attention, your don't just turn it off, wait but at the end it doesn't worth it unfortunately.

Kabadayi (2007)

The Turkish Godfather
22 December 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I know the subject line is very much pretentious. I must tell this two movies (The Godfather and Kabadayi) have two completely different stories (yet they both are about tough guys). I've chosen this subject because Kabadayi holds the same place in Turkish cinema what The Gotfather holds in Hollywood.

Before I tell you a little summary of the plot, let me explain what Kabadayi means (şarkının burası turistler için). I think English word for Kabadayi is "rowdy" but I'm not absolutely sure of that since it holds some cultural meaning in Turkey too. Nowadays, we all know the mafia is everywhere. They do all the dirty business, drug dealing, blackmailing and so on. But in the old times, they were guys who were called Kabadayi. Those guys were big brothers of the neighborhood, they "solve" the problems among people in their own way but they were honest and kind. They also support the poor and the weak.

You might call them sort of Robin Hood (that is actually mentioned in the movie ironically).

Ali Osman (played by Sener Sen) is a Kabadayi. He's old now, taking care of his legal business but still helping the poor and sometimes getting together with old mates who were kabadayis once. They chat and have jokes about good old days. Ali Osman recently suffering from short-time memory losses. He knows his and his friend's time has passed.

One day he learns that his love of life Afet(played by Selma Kutlu) is in deathbed. He hasn't seen her for years but never forgot her. He goes to visit her to learn surprise of a lifetime. She tells Ali Osman that he's got a son from her that he never know.

She never told him that before, because when they were in love Ali Osman was actually married to another woman (whom later died and Ali Osman also lost his other son from his wife - Ali Osman considers all these loses as a punishment of god because he did so many bad things in the past). Afet didn't want to disturb Ali Osman's family life. When she learned her pregnancy, AliOsman was in jail, she didn't visit him and they never seen each other afterwords. Afet raised her son and told him that his father is Surmeli(played by RasimOztekin) who is actually a gay man who was Afet's helper when she was a famous singer.

Ali Osman goes and finds his son Murat(played by Ismail Hacioglu) and tells him that "I'm your father your mom just told me that and now she is dying". But Murat is denying his mother and doesn't want to see her let alone his "new" father. He's working at a bar/night club as a DJ together with his amazingly beautiful girlfriend Karaca(played by Asli Tandogan).

Here we're introduced to villain: Devran (played by Kenan Imirzalioglu). This guy is a full featured modern mafia. Drug dealing, blackmailing and taking tribute from nightclubs is his business. We later learn that he's actually serving to much bigger "boss" while playing double-sided with secret service. The nightclub that Murat works is one of places which Devran wants to take. But real trouble is that Devran loves Murat's girlfriend Karaca like crazy. This love is the key of the movie actually.

Devran tries everything to get Karaca, will Murat cope with that, is there a last clash waiting for Ali Osman before he leaves the "underground world" ?

Well I'm not going to tell you the whole story line by line here, I just wanted to give you sense of it. This is actually ground building parts of the movie. Later on it develops quickly and give you as much action as drama.

I like the movie mainly because it never makes you think "hey this is stupid, why he/she did that ?? pointless....".

It's plot is very well written. Nothing more nothing less. Characters are quite believable. Cast and acting is awesome. The movie never tries to hide anything and reveal it later to shock you or something like that, you just watch it and enjoy it. At first it looks like a cliché story but it is very well suited to Turkey's life style and doesn't look awkward. There is even very nice sense of humor placed smartly in the movie piece by piece. Sener Sen (Ali Osman) giving another great performance supporting cast deserves real appreciation too.

One could argue that there are very few battle/skirmish scenes as a mafia story (I should have said Kabadayi movie - you'll know why when you watch it). And those scenes are not "emphasized". I mean guns, shooting scenes and blasts could have been much better. The quality of these scenes actually reminded me Eskiya, another great movie also featured Sener Sen and Yavuz Turgul. I think director and story writer didn't want the action scenes to steal the movie. That's why those scenes are not very strong except the last slamming scene (pls see: Osmanli Tokadi).

Camera man's work is above the average but at some scenes we see a little bit of raw lighting. Editing is OK, long runtime is not a problem here.

Story telling is flawless. At no point I lost the story line or felt bored. If you push it hard you can find some small holes like how on earth you cut someone's throat and even one drop of blood doesn't splash on you suit?

The movie delves into mafia, torture at jails, politicians's corruption even the secret service's work. At the end of the movie we learn some interesting stuff like what has driven Devran so out of his mind and he is just the outcome of what have done to him.

If you have chance to see it, don't miss.

Thank you everyone who made or contributed to this movie.

How many times a movie can trick you?
6 December 2007
I was told that the movie is above the average but I did not expect it to fix me to the chair for two hours actually.

I know it's been mentioned in many other comments already but I also want to praise the director as how easily he tells us the story with perfect flashbacks. If you watch closely (pun intended) then you never get lost in this very complex script.

As speaking of acting and cast, it's almost perfect. Bale gives unbelievable play and Jackman is man of his role also it's pure joy to watch Michael Caine. Johansson is very believable and quite pretty (oddly not so beautiful in this one though.)

I'm afraid the movie could not hide "the secret(s)" till the end for me, yet it surprised and amazed me so many times. I can see now how true it is that one gets fooled mostly because he wants it this way.

It's for sure that I'll see more tricks when I watch it again and again. This movie is one of those movies that is gives you too much at once and you need to watch it till you absorb all of what it offers.

Bother yourself Not
28 November 2007
If there was a contest about "who's gonna make the worst, not funny, bloody, stupid and full of bullshit movie" this movie and it's director could get a change, but no more than this.

It's not funny, it's disgusting, it's stupid.

If you say "hey man that's the point", then, go to toilet and look at sh.. for one and half and hour. Write some critic about it, but sorry man I won't be here reading it.

You see the movie had effect even on MEEE!!! Böö..

It's pity that they've used meters of film, spent so much money on this.

A perfect spy movie
26 November 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Thank you Doug Liman for making the movie and thank you Matt Damon for this flawless action.

I read critics that hate the movie and their main point of criticism is that movie does not follow the original novels' story. I have not read the book and therefore I really happy with the movie.

I understand who read and loved the book, they normally expect the movie to "be" like the book. But obviously director and Damon has chanced things (I mention Damon because he took part in fighting with the studio when they wanted the cut some of the scenes, but the director and Damon insisted keeping this scenes (farmhouse scenes) so, both the director and Damon believed in the movie.) And those changes created a easy to follow, always keeping your attention up movie but it also gives the plot and it's messages so clear.

I always like American movies that are shot in Europe, the director used very nice views of roads, buildings, streets and so on, movie flows like a nice stream and it's logic never fails.

Matt Damon is brilliant as always, he's playing his role in great confidence, fight scenes are very real, chase scene was nice and it reminds "Italian Job" in a smart way.

So, as a whole this movie is really good, sequels proofed to be better though.
