Missed the mark
11 October 2023
I don't think we're meant to take this movie seriously. Because it seems that the filmmakers didn't even take it seriously.

The good bits: Stunningly beautiful sceneries; attractive easy on the eye leads; supporting actors' performance.

The no good bits: the script is not very convincing, lacks substance; both female and male leads' unrealistic makeup just doesn't seem truthful to the characters; lead performances are cringy at times; pacing seems a bit off especially towards the end.

Overall it's a very forgettable movie. I think I'll only remember the beautiful blue sea and the unnecessarily long false eyelashes.

Well written comedy
8 December 2022
Must say that I'm pleasantly surprised by this well written Australian comedy. No it's not at the "all time favourite" level like Friends or Seinfeld, but it is witty, it's sweet, it's laugh out loud and it has heart.

The writing is clever and very "now" (borrowed from episode 3:"it's now"). The acting is great, including most of the support actors. Two lead characters have good chemistry, which is absolutely essential in such series.

If you like romantic comedy, looking for some "comfort tv", something light and fun, I definitely recommend this little hidden gem. I think I was the first viewer who gave it a rating on IMDB. Come on. This series is too good to be this "hidden".

If you wanna kill some time
6 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Please Netflix stop making 10 or 20 average forgettable movies and just use all that money and resources to make 1 good one.

It's an ok movie if you just want to kill some time and you're checking your phone now and then. The acting is average. The writing is average. The soundtrack also average. Come on! You can do better.

Also, are we supposed to think that women are just gonna jump straight into another serious relationship right after ending one with someone we met 5 minutes ago? That's not real life. It's not very believable. Not in today's dating world anyway.

After watching so many average new Netflix romcoms, I think next time I'll just stick with my old time favourite romcoms.

Couldn't do it
4 September 2022
The female lead is too political and cynical and "The world owes me. It's the world's fault" type. Totally turned me off I have to say. Couldn't make it pass the half hour point. Also feel like both main characters' background stories are too hard to believe, unrealistic. So basically the script is the biggest problem in my opinion. The female lead's pretentious breathy singing doesn't help either. The male lead is likeable. I also liked him in Cinderella. Was hoping his Netflix debut would be a good one but oh well. Netflix is never gonna read this but still: Stop making 10 bad movies, instead use the resources for those 10 movies to make 1 great movie!

More like a 6.5
4 September 2022
If you've been to Italy and you liked it, or if you've always wanted to go to Italy, give this movie a go. It's an easy to watch romcom with great sceneries. The male lead basically carries the whole film. I enjoyed watching him on the screen and I look forward to seeing him more in movies. The female lead is not as good. And there's not much chemistry between the two leads, which is a big no in a romcom like this one. The storyline is of course totally predictable but you'd expect that in such movies. Overall it's not a waste of 2 hours for me. I actually enjoyed it. 6.5 out of 10 for Love in the Villa.

Enjoyable watch
25 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Same kind of concept as Sliding Doors. But for the "there are no wrong answers, everyone gets a prize" era. The movie took its time to tell two predictable stories beautifully and patiently. It's an enjoyable watch if your go-to movie criticism is not "too slow" or "predictable".

Please also watch Tully (Charlize Theron) if you're interested in the subject of motherhood.

Beautiful shell but hollow inside

Brilliant cast wasted by pretentious directing. I love a stylish designer wardrobe as much as the next viewer. But the movie needs to have some substantial meanings too!

Very Entertaining

More like a 7.5 if I may.

This movie is clever, funny and very entertaining. I enjoyed every moment of it. Nicolas Cage is great in the movie and so are the rest of the cast. Oh and the sceneries are just stunning.

It's worth watching

Not Catherine Tate's best but I still had a good time binging season 1. The 1st episode is not much but I'm very glad I did not give up. It gets better.

Pleasantly Surprised
13 April 2022
I genuinely enjoyed this movie. It's actually very engaging. There has not been a dull moment! Yes the concept might be "unbelievable" as in "how could it happen, it doesn't make sense", but same goes for Groundhog Day.

Love the backdrop of beautiful Sydney. The lead actor is brilliant.

A simple and classic rom-com
16 July 2021
If I wasn't biased, I'd give it a 7. But it was filmed in Queensland, Australia, this beautiful place I love, 8 it is.

Remember those rom-coms from early to mid 2000s? Love Actually, Holiday, Bridget Jones Diary, just to name a few. Although a 2021 film, it has that 2000s vibe, which I'm not ashamed to say that I like. A simple and cute storyline, good looking cast, stunning sceneries, what's not to like? Watched it with a smile on my face.

I did also notice the not-so-realistic makeup and perfectly ironed shirt on the beach, but to be honest I was not bothered.

So if you're thinking of giving this movie a go...

Love Actually fan NOT disappointed
29 June 2019
When I first found out that this movie was written by the Love Actually writer, I was like YES! Must see! Because Love Actually is one of my favourite movies of all time. And then as the release date came approched, I tried to lower my expectations as I didn't want to be disappointed. And then, I watched it, pleasantly surprised, satisfied with the movie in every way! As another movie which was inspired by legendary musicians, Yesterday is a breath of fresh air, unlike Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman, this is not a biography, it's a very cute love story, carefully unfolded, with elements of fantasy and the Beatles music. Nice little twists along the way, with a truly moving ending. Both leading actors did such a great job, and Kate McKinnon is awesome. Excellent directing as well. Easily 8 out of 10!
