Deutschmänner (2006 TV Movie)
6/10
Nice intelligent Comedy
30 March 2006
The title "Deutschmänner" which means "German men" in English sounds quite odd for German mother speaker at first because it is an extraordinary combination of the two words "German/y and men". But the title had been chosen intelligently because it reflects the main topics of the plot. The comedy is an unconventional variation of "Green Card" :a male German student marrying his best male friend for getting him an permanent residence permit in Germany.

Therefore both have to act as a gay couple, which they are not, definitely. The problem is that they both are running after women as it is good for them. Now that they have to act as gay men it makes them thinking about their behavior towards women a bit.

As a result, the movie is more about heterosexual male identity as it is about gay identity. The problem of being someone with a non German background in Germany is only mentioned within the first part, after the marriage the main point of view is on the boys' relationship. Because of the great acting abilities of the two main characters, the comedy has its great funny moments. It is only annoying that the story is presented by one of the female characters. Some inside views into the minds of the male characters might have been more interesting.
