Sound of Freedom (2023)
The Most Powerful Film I've Seen in Years.
Never mind the outstanding cast, the subject matter alone and the fact that it's based on a true story send this gem over the top. Truly moving, heartbreaking and memorable. This film left me in tears. In spite of the tough subject matter that will disturb anyone, I'm glad that I saw it. So should you.
I'm sorry to say that I missed that Mira Sorvino was even in this film, her role is small but that aside, Jim C. Did an outstanding job in the lead role and the supporting characters (even the kids) are real.
What a shame that it took so long for the team to get this film into theaters, but their dedication and passion for the subject must've carried them along the way. Kudos to Angel Studios.
Purgatory Road (2017)
Dark and bloody!
I really wasn't sure what to expect when I rented this movie over on Prime. Overall, I was surprised at how bloody it was, so you can't say that you haven't been warned.
For me, I think it would've been extremely challenging to play such a dark character like Father Vincent, and the actor portraying him does a terrific job. In fact, I think that the entire cast all across the board do their best and to some extent, they carry the film. Because for me, the immediate way that we're given the justification/reason of WHY Father Vincent is the way that he is killed the mystery. Audiences like to wonder and figure things out.
So, what I'm pointing out here is that the writing is somewhat flawed. This could've easily been a homerun indie because it had so much going for it off the bat. Limited locations, small cast, unique concept - but the script's execution at times - albeit in small ways - could've been better. Other than that, if you like blood and violence, you WILL enjoy the film. Once again, hats off to the cast for making this film totally worthwhile!
And Just Like That... (2021)
Horrible
So bad that I couldn't stomach more than 10 minutes of this, some of the stupidest writing I've ever seen. The original series was great, the two films that followed were bad, but this, no words for how awful this is.
Designated Survivor (2016)
Went off the rails
Decent concept but the writers sort of blew it and I lost interest pretty fast. Nice sets at least and believable on that level, just not in the writing. I also didn't totally buy into the (overly) Mr. Nice Guy POTUS. Character could have been more real, just like the plot.
The Perfect Husband: The Laci Peterson Story (2004)
Outstanding performance by Dean Cain.
I came across this film that I somehow missed in the past. To say that at times I was literally convinced that I was staring at Scott Peterson when Dean Cain was on screen is an understatement!
Films based on real people/events are usually cheesy or hard to get into because its people acting in some drama we've already seen play out - that is NOT the case with this film.
The entire was excellent, well done overall and worth seeing!
The Last Kingdom (2015)
Now THAT'S Entertainment!
I am watching season 5 as I write this review, and I'm not so sure that my words will even come close to doing this series justice. I'm pretty damn sure that the people involved with this series never come here to read the comments, but if they ever do, I just wanna say that you guys KILLED IT!
For starters, it is abundantly obvious that those in charge are staying faithful to the material that it's based on. It's always obvious when people don't. But here, the authenticity is always present, not a single element in 5 seasons has EVER felt 'off,' which is stunning.
In terms of the cast and the production itself, it's all top-notch. Actors, production design, cinematography, direction, wardrobe -- I can go on!
Long story short, you don't want to miss this series. I may have initially found the violence and battles somewhat excessive, but by now, I truly have zero complaints and think that I could watch this forever - or at least, watch it all over again. "Play it, Sam," LoL!!
I Am Normal (2020)
Well done!
I was able to see "I Am Normal" and am so glad that I did. This short film scored high marks on every single level in my book. Strong script, beautifully shot with on target direction and flawless acting performances.
The Crown (2016)
Flawlessly executed!
By now, I've watched every season more than once. I must admit that seasons 1 &2 are my favorites. I do believe that Claire Foy and Matt Smith were the best actors portraying Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.
The attention to detail throughout is stunning. Just so beautiful to look at, I could eat it! LoL! Do not miss!
Yellowstone (2018)
The cast really carries this series...
I must admit that season 1 (at times) turned me off due to what I'd call poor writing choices and many things obviously done for shock value that had NOTHING to do with plot or character development.
I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it either.
The scenery is just absolutely gorgeous to look at. I stuck with it due to a friend's insistence, and so when the bad guys got better (GREAT acting) in season 2, I became more interested.
But all along, the actors make the best of what they're given and make it a pleasure to watch. Edit to add here that I'm finding season 4 an absolute mess.
John Adams (2008)
A real pleasure to watch!
I gave it 9 stars because some part of me felt that Paul Giamatti wasn't exactly the best choice for this role. That aside, he did a fantastic job but the supporting cast was TRULY outstanding and helped carry this addictive miniseries.
Stephen Dillane was captivating as Thomas Jefferson - his performance alone makes the entire series worth watching.
A must watch for those who are interested in our fascinating history. It's just so well done on so many levels, a real treat. Don't miss it!
Turn (2014)
Outstanding!
Caught this series over on Netflix, boy am I glad that I did. Smartly done, great acting - every single cast member. Strong writing, brilliant direction and cinematography. Don't miss it.
