Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
Monsters!
I absolutely loved this movie. There were a few moments of human melodrama that could be cut out without trouble. I want fighting monsters!
Arrival (2016)
A high brow movie that doesn't bore
I came in the theater expecting a film full of alien film cliches (aggressive aliens, stupid humans, plot holes the size of Texas). I was pleasantly surprised to find a thoughtful, intelligent film that seemed to try to avoid the cliches.
The plot was somewhat difficult to follow, but the writers left enough bread crumbs to follow. If they'd left any more bread crumbs, the film would have lost some of its mystique. I watched it again a few days later, and still found sub plots. I really hope they make more of these.
Mary Poppins Returns (2018)
Excellent!
I didn't watch the original, so I wasn't sure what to expect. This film was amazing! I started out thinking perhaps this film was beneath an actress of Emily Blunt's caliber, but she pulled it off flawlessly.
A Quiet Place (2018)
Ten stars
I can't say enough positive things about this film. It's so quiet the noisy moments are fairly jarring. The bathtub scene is the jewel in the crown. Emily Blunt really knocked it out of the park. John Krasinski also nailed his portrayal of a stalwart and fearless father protecting his family.
I rarely give 10 stars, but this film deserves it.
The Nun (2018)
Entertaining, but predictable
I like scary films, especially when they are unpredictable. This film had plenty of jump scares, but not too much gore. It was a bit predictable though. I did thoroughly enjoy the part where they meet the Abbess, who is clearly a malevolent entity. The ending leaves open the possibility of sequels. Or maybe it was a prequel. And the guy who plays Frenchie is so hot!
The Meg (2018)
China owns Hollywood
I really wanted to like this film, but the books were way better. If you read the books, there are ZERO Chinese characters. It's understandable if they wrote in a few Chinese characters, even a main character. After all, China is a big country full of amazing people. But they rewrote the entire thing to be China-centric. This is yet another example of China taking over Hollywood.
Dumbo (2019)
Very good
I remember watching the animated version when I was a kid, but I don't recall the contents of the film. I went in with zero preconceptions or judgements.
I really liked how they brought Dumbo and mother's characters alive, and made me feel sadness at their separation and treatment. Obviously, the idea of a flying elephant is plain silly, but they managed to pull it off without making it look too silly.
Godzilla (1998)
The late 90s
I watched this again after 20 years. It took me back to a time when America had nothing more to fear than aliens blowing up the empire state building and a nuclear lizard destroying Manhattan. The pay phones really took me back.
A Dog's Journey (2019)
It's ok
I really love dogs, and I really enjoyed this film. However, there are some moments where the plot is predictable and saccharine. The last few minutes are so cheesy, you can practically swim in the cheese.
Genesis: Paradise Lost (2017)
Contemptible drivel
This movie is nothing more than theocratic piffle. Don't waste your money.
