Beacon 23 (2023)
well written - well acted - well its good actually
As usual on this site - lots of negative ninnies feel that they must continue to troll really good shows. I had my doubts because of the poor rating - but voraciously devoured all 3 gripping and entertaining episodes. The acting is great - the interest level is high and I just love it. There seems to be lots more interesting developments to come as we have been teased with bits and pieces from the main characters past lives - cannot wait for the next episode. So guys - please stop your silly reviews giving low scores - get with the programme (yes this is actually how you spell programme in English!!).
Orphan Black: Echoes (2023)
Welcome back Orphan Black
A timely return with a twist. Good story telling and drama that builds on the fantastic Orphan Black.
Not sure I agree with the person who rants about diversity and a lack of spaceships giving the series a 2. The review is as mean-spirited as the mark.
There are some decent ethical dilemmas explored and the main actresses are engaging and play their parts well. Some of the bit part players are - well - bit part players. However, as we saw with Orphan Black in later series - characters were fleshed out when is was appropriate to explore their backstory in the main story line. So there is time yet for additional layers.
Hopefully the series will get renewed and there will be other spinoffs in the Orphan Black Universe.
RuPaul's Drag Race: The Daytona Wind (2022)
Without doubt
The utterly - farterly - splendiferously, most creative and watchable episode in years !!!!!
Apparently this review is too short to post - hence this very afterthought filler to enable me to get to 150 characters (a bit like seasons 10-13 - except they dang didny not contain any characters at all) - ouchio!
Suspicion (2022)
poor intro
Sloppy first episode takes a long drawn out - badly scripted and unrealistic hour to apprehend the presumed leads. Apologies - as now given up on this unrewarding series.
Shadow and Bone (2021)
not the new GOT
Whilst it has a semi engaging storyline - it still comes across as a YA project. Netflix is now mostly teen or YS oriented nonsense and poor quality reality TV. Only HBO seems able to produce enduring quality.
Monte Carlo (2011)
super sweet, charming and funny
Pleasantly surprised by this film. charming - if predictable moments. but if you approach it in the right frame of mind it will bring you lots of smiles ;)
Star Trek: Discovery: That Hope Is You, Part 2 (2021)
Corny beyond belief
What a sad state this series is in. Truly dreadful and juvenile writing. Wasted special effects - and as for 'let's fly' - purleez
Is Burnham now a 'fly girl' - sack the writers, the producers and get another crew in to turn this programme around!!!
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Makes little sense
This film is unintelligible for the most part. Sad because I think everyone had lots of good will and was looking forward to it.
Star Trek: Discovery: Su'Kal (2020)
From worst to worser!
Who writes this nonsense - an utter waste of time.
Star Trek: Discovery: Forget Me Not (2020)
Oh dear - virtue signalling nonsense
This series has turned into a load of virtue signalling rubbish. I really don't think that anyone involved in the production - let alone the acting - knows what they are doing or why they are here.
The Queen's Gambit (2020)
Life can be bleak but if you have talent and willpower...
There are losers in this story - several of them women. However, they were the victims of overwhelming odds being stacked against them. In setting the substantive parts of this story in the late 60s we witness the times a changin' and that talent and will power can enable female success. We are never overly spoon fed as a viewer and there is enough narrative tension and intrigue to keep us engaged. A brilliant production with great script, acting, effects, sets, and costume. Especially love the pom pom hat and outfit alluding to the chess piece queen of the title.
The Umbrella Academy (2019)
deathly tedious
Nothing redeeming about episode 1 - snooze fest. the utterly jarring and unnecessary sound track is very annoying
The Old Guard (2020)
Ok - another budget Netflix film
I finally know why I find Netflix films cheap. It's the tinny - rather unfilmatic soundtrack. Nothing about the soundtrack to this film was either memorable or endearing. It's not a real film - more of a long pilot episode for a TV programme (and yes - this is how you really spell programme). That being said - it has it's moments but they all lack a bit punch. There is the gay relationship that's not really gay enough or a relationship. There is the virtue signalling cast. It's kind of - diversity by numbers.
Halt and Catch Fire (2014)
Just wow
Utterly transfixed by this absorbing and satisfying show. Still sobbing as I write this after viewing the final episode. Like less tech savvy version of Cam.
Tales from the Loop: Parallel (2020)
quiet and moving
A superb portrayal of longing and an inability to undertake risk - the fear and reticence of the outsider.
beautifully rendered and acted
Pearson (2019)
Excellent new show
Really not sure why all the nit picking. The show is a different show to Suits. It is less comedy and more drama - with a little grit.
It finds its feet after a few episodes as it gradually introduces the characters and their drives and foibles.
Ms Torres is fantastic as always and Simon Kassianides makes for a suitably flawed anti hero - plus he is damn sexy. Waiting for more sparks to fly!
Accounts (1983)
Deeply affecting film
I saw this film as a teenager and it affected me in so many positive ways. It was in the days of the conservative government that was slowly scapegoating gay men in particular - resulting in Section 28 some years later.
As a teenager with no access to social media - feeling alone and insecure - the films of Film 4 were a vital lifeline for me. Giving some sense of self and identity.
It would be great to see it again - however - I doubt this will happen given the searches and efforts made by the other reviewers.
The Umbrella Academy (2019)
deathly tedious
Nothing redeeming about episode 1 - snooze fest. the utterly jarring and unnecessary sound track is very annoying
A Star Is Born (2018)
from a cynic to a believer
Yes - I believe. outstanding, understated, overstated - literally who cares. fundamentally this is a perfectly wonderful film - with two shining stars.
Queer Eye: God Bless Gay (2018)
cried like a baby
Such a moving episode in this series - no spoilers from me - just watch it for yourself - real people having real changes in lives and perspectives - love in action - families and communities coming together
Killing Eve (2018)
superbly dark
Loved the acting, the sound track, the mise en scene - the English humour and nuances. All in all a total treat.
