The Walking Dead: Dead City (2023)
Better than expected! (Very minor spoiler-ish at bottom)
I went it to this with very low expectations given how the main show kinda started to fall off towards the end. Jeffrey Dean Morgan's nails it as Negan every time, and as a character he's just so fun to watch.
So if you are a Negan fan, you're going to enjoy this no matter what. Some brilliant moments. Maybe not quite "I fed him spaghetti!" good, but still pretty great.
Fun villain, fun cast. Engaging plot. The first episode didn't really catch my interest, but by the end of the second it had my attention, and for the most part, it continued to improve throughout.
That being said, there are a few nonsensical and borderline comical things that happen. Audibly laughed and said "What???" on one of them. But, this is the TWD, so...
----(sorta spoiler) ---- Lastly, I will add that Maggie's on-off hatred for Negan is the major theme of the film, and that did get a little tiresome. It was just constantly back and forth; They had reconciled In s11 of the main show. And that it totally cheapens that scene, which I thought was fine. But, without that retcon, we wouldn't really this show.
Gonna give it an 8, but it's a low 8. I like The Walking Dead, despite all its shortcomings.
Andor (2022)
Been waiting for Star Wars content like this
If you were burned by Book of Boba Fett and/or (pun intended) Kenobi, give this one a shot. Seriously. I knew I was going to watch it anyway, but after the last two letdowns I really didn't have a whole lot of hope.
I came out of the first 3 episodes thinking that I might like this better than Mando (and a number of the movies, quite honestly). Good casting, good acting, but above all that, it's WELL WRITTEN AND DIRECTED. Finally.
It's fairly gritty for Star Wars, maybe even more so than Rogue One. At some points it's a bit of a slow burn, in a very positive way. It's really unlike anything we've seen in Star Wars (aside from Rogue One, perhaps, but this has a bit of a different feel to it).
Another review mentioned to watch the first 3 episodes together - I agree.
I can definitely see why they released them that way. Honestly can't wait for next Wednesday, and I haven't felt that way since Mando S2.
Better Call Saul (2015)
Very few shows are actually worth 10 stars
Starting out as a comedic slow burn, and evolving into a fast paced crime drama, Better Call Saul is every bit as good as Breaking Bad.
Don't let its slow start deter you. While it stands just fine on its own, to get the most out of the series make sure to see Breaking Bad first.
The Thing About Pam (2022)
Not as bad as some are saying
Only one episode so far, so rating subject to change.
Renee Zellweger does a very good job as Hupp, but otherwise the acting isn't out of this world. It's believable enough.
If you're already familiar with this story from the podcast or otherwise, you'll find the accuracy to real events is pretty dang close, especially considering it's an NBC drama. Hoping it continues like this for the rest of the series and doesn't stray too far from reality.
Where it falls short for me is the tone. As others have mentioned, it feels a little "off," as if they weren't sure whether or not to make a serious true crime drama or a dark comedy. It's a little of both and doesn't do either of them particularly well. Sticking with a serious approach would have been the right move here, and had they done so my opinion of the show would be a lot more positive.
Overall, it's entertaining. It think it's worth a watch if the subject matter is of interest to you. Whether or not you'll like it probably depends on how well the quirky tone sits with you, but it's definitely not a 1 star show - nor is it a masterpiece.
The Book of Boba Fett (2021)
Letdown
Ended up having to come back and edit this review after initially giving it a pretty high rating by the second episode.
It has its moments, and honestly could have been a good show had it not been for the abysmal directing and a script as if it were a rough draft in the writer's room.
Robert Rodriguez "jokes" in the 'Disney Gallery' behind the scenes that it felt like he was a kid playing with all these cool action figures... well yeah, that's pretty much what it felt like watching it, too.
Without giving anything away, it does tie into the "Mandoverse" in some ways, so it's probably mandatory viewing before Mando S3.
The Grand Tour: The Grand Tour Presents: Carnage A Trois (2021)
Not bad, but not a normal special
Don't expect some grand adventure. Feels more like watching youtube than an actual GT/TG special - but theres really nothing wrong with that. They were obviously limited by covid restrictions, but it's still the trio doing what they do.
All these reviews rating it 1/10 are ridiculous, but it's also not a return to the "good old days" like some others are claiming. Just be thankful we're getting any Grand Tour at all.
