Rushmore (1998)
10/10
A touching journey of love, hate and self discovery
27 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Rushmore is directed by Wes Anderson and stars his frequent collaborators Jason Schwartzman and Bill Murray. Despite it only being Anderson's second feature, it still remains one of his best and the film which opened the eyes of the world to his work. The story follows a student named Max Fisher (played by Schwartzman) on a journey of love, hate and self discovery.

This film is a true testament of the strengths we have come to expect from Anderson as a director and a writer. It has clever dialogue, complex and well written characters, great music and wonderful cinematography. In addition to this, Anderson creates a story so filled with dark humor and deep emotion it is impossible to look away.

Rushmore is perhaps the most realistic coming of age depiction ever put on screen and there is a few reasons why. The film deals largely with the question of acceptance and what it means to belong somewhere. When we meet Max, it is clear that he belongs at his school Rushmore, this is until he falls in love with a school teacher named Rosemary and she becomes his new sense of belonging. Later in the film when he gets kicked out of school and repelled by Rosemary we therefore learn that behind Max's confident exterior is a real feeling of disconnection and that forces him on a coming of age journey.

Max and many other characters in this movie can seem too quirky and weird at first glance, but it's their unfiltered personas that makes them real. As viewers, some of the decisions the characters make fills us with love for them, while others fills us with hate. However, we learn to accept and even like them all, despite their many flaws. This is when one realises that the story brings us on a similar journey as Max's and by the end of it we can just like him, accept all sides of ourselves and recognise that it's okay to be whoever we are, as long as we are open for change. In many ways, the story brings its own concept to us, we feel like we belong in this crooked world, mainly because of how we can find something relatable in every single character in this film. Whether it's Max's dark humor, self consciousness and passion or Herman Blume's feeling of regret, self hatred and dissatisfaction.

This is a beautiful film about wounded hearts latching on to each other, whether your heart is wounded or not, I recommend that you latch on to this story and keep it close. What Anderson created with this film is the kind of magic you rarely see, much less experience.

The best TV show ever created. It's everything you hope it is and more. So smart, so groundbreaking, so emotional. Truly the best in every way.

Likeable but not as original as it wanted to be.

I liked this movie. It was a heartwarming and entertaining journey. My problem with this movie besides a lot of exposition is that "looking for a girl over the world" is a clichè we have seen too many times. I think the story would have benefited from even more background and a better insight into the relationship between him and his mother and the search for his father. However, people should watch this movie. It has many interesting aspects and the trip is worth it.

This movie reminds me of "500 days of summer" in all the best ways. Great acting, great cinematography and such a charming, funny and heartbreaking story so full of life. Even tho the main character is infact dying, you end up feeling more alive then ever.
