Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)
My new all time favourite movie villain
The story structure is a little strange, felt episodic almost, not necessarily a bad thing just different. Other than that though, this movie is the perfect send off for an amazing trilogy that never misses. Huge credit goes to Chukwudi Iwuji, his performance is phenomenal and he is so well written too. A villainized perfectionist control freak, with a cold calculated nature, slowly unravels as the movie progresses and everything slowly becomes out of control and Chukwudi performs this spiral into madness perfectly. A villain so mad, even his henchmen turn on him because he's just that crazy. Chukwudi has a bright future after this performance, but enough raving about him, there is plenty more to love here, or to cry about I guess, because goddamn, James Gunn fully wound up and threw a sucker punch directly into your heartstrings for this movie and it is amazing.
This isn't just another marvel movie... but you should know that by now, because it's the Guardians of the Galaxy, they never have been "just" another marvel movie.
Under the Banner of Heaven (2022)
An excellent message about deconversion
This show was a gripping thriller/mystery while also perfectly balancing a religious deconversion story and shining some light on the blindness and ignorance there is in organized religion. Jeb's partner, Bill, really shines in this show, his ability to be Jeb's light in the tunnel in his deconversion was so powerful. Jeb had so many biases, and lies ingrained in him and his partner and best friend embodied many of the things Jeb was supposed to hate, according to his church, but he can't bring himself to do so, and in the end Jeb's humanity wins out over the vile and cruel lens of religious dogma, and he begins to see people as they are and not who he was taught they were supposed to be. My only complaint about this show is the ending, there wasn't enough time to wrap everything up satisfyingly. Overall though, this show is fantastic and if you grew up in a religious home, Mormon or not, extremist or not, this show will speak volumes to you.
Blood of Zeus (2020)
This is no Castlevania...
This show kinda left me disappointed, the studio behind Castlevania has seemingly produced absolute bombshell season after season of awesome and this was just... Okay? There's way too many characters and they do not provide enough time to actually develop their relationships, honestly this season felt like Castlevania season 2 if they didn't make season 1 and just threw you into all those characters expecting you to be invested and connect with them, but it doesn't really click for me. I think this show has promise but, the main group of characters have very minimal interaction or character building and often their backstory comes up at super weird times with little to no effect. The smuggler guys, I forget their names, kept alluding to something bad they wanna repent for and it's often not pressed much further than that and then out of nowhere when the Giants are approaching Olympus in the final Battle they just make an offhanded comment about how they were the ones who sold the giants body to the demons and it is taken very lightly and is basically brushed aside. None of the characters really made me feel invested in them except for zeus and his sons, which we barely got story for but, Hermes was such a lovely character and I felt my heart cry a little when he was seemingly about to be killed because I really enjoyed his character, thank the gods they saved him. Anyways, this show is action packed, cool animation and some interesting characters, the plot is a bit all over the place, too many agendas and just all in all does not stand up to the quality of Castlevania's first season.
This show is enjoyable and I hope they make more so they can fix the characters who are all very unique and interesting. Btw, the way the characters all kinda armoured up at the end and started showing off their cool new fighting abilities really felt undeserved like, the smuggler guy with the necklace using the magic whip like a badass was cool but, he really only used a whip situationally once in the show, while the other smuggler using the magic discus thing also felt so out of place and random, it would have made more sense if these characters had originally had these weapons and fighting styles incorporated into their character originally but, whatever, I guess I have a lot of complaints for this show. If you liked Castlevania you'll probably like this and, if you haven't seen Castlevania watch that instead.
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
Awesome 👍 but, not quite as good as it's predecessor
The Haunting of Bly Manor is a fantastic show in its own right and has plenty of really good horror/scary moments but, it's not on the same level of horror as hill house. If you're a fan of Hill House you'll enjoy this, it has fantastic story, characters, and writing. It's just not as scary as hill house.
The New Mutants (2020)
Not a cinematic masterpiece but...
This is no cinematic masterpiece but, damn it is a hell of a time, enjoyable characters, good character development and satisfying relationships. Also the cool and unique powers and vfx goes without saying, this movie is fun beginning to end and is definitely worth the wait
Klaus (2019)
Gorgeous, original and sweet
This movie is a breath of fresh air with beautiful animation, fantastic lovable characters and, an entirely original Christmas story that doesn't feel stale. it is THE perfect holiday movie of the year(maybe of all time). Definitely a fantastic Christmas movie for the entire family! Highly recommend
Hellboy (2019)
So, they made hellboy and forgot they were making a movie too
It's not as bad as it's cracked up to be. It has tons of potential and felt very true to the comics, if you enjoyed the comics you'll get a kick out of this. But, unfortunately it was lacking in plenty of areas
Dragonfyre (2013)
DON'T BELIEVE THE HATE!
This movie is a deep and moving tale about a us veteran fighting orcs that represent his demons you have to be really intelligent to understand this Masterpiece!!!
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
This movie is not over hyped!
Going into this I had high hopes but, was afraid It might not be as good as the hype says But, damn... This movie is underhyped. I loved every second of it. The animation was gorgeous, the characters were so fun and the soundtrack, flawless. The twists, you never see coming and don't even get me started on how beautiful the end fight scene was. This film is the best animated film of 2018 and in my opinion, the best film of 2018 definitely worth seeing!
The Grinch (2018)
Don't listen to the grinches reviewing this movie!
Anyone who gave this a bad rating clearly is just upset because, they don't like a modern Grinch because they grew up with the original classic Grinch cartoon. This movie was one of the most adorable and fun feel-good animated movies I've seen in a long time. Benedict Cumberbatch killed it as the Grinch and, all the gadgets and grandeur of the grinches holiday heist scene is so creative and colourful and fantastical! This is one of the greatest Christmas movies of all time up there with Nightmare before Christmas. This movie was a joy to watch and if you couldn't find joy in this movie maybe, you're the Grinch.
Castlevania (2017)
In only an hour and a half this show became one of my all-time favourite animes
This shows first season may have been extremely short but, the depth and quality and effort put into it gave me the same feeling as any 250 bazillion episode anime does in only 4 episodes. Truly a remarkable show, I have no doubts that the second season will be just as good if not better! No complaints!
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
A Masterpiece!
I am not a huge fan of horror but, this is one of the greatest shows I've ever seen. The attention to detail is insane! The show is so unpredictable that you eventually learn to predict it's unpredictability if that makes any sense? The little details and hidden things throughout the whole show just make it that much better! If you love a good story and can tolerate a little horror, this show is for you!
