Solos (2021)
Sci Fi theatre monologues with astral cast
This was wrongfully dubbed by some users as a Blackmirroresque copy . I couldnt disagree more. I found the series engaging and fascinating and I almost imagined myself on a seat in a theatre (the kind where they perform plays) watching wonderful actors delivering monologues that seemed directly focused on me, the audience. The format itself is tailored in such fashion. Never a boring moment and I could literally feel the emotions of the characters, ride their stories, feel their crescendos and diminuendos. I am not sure every Scifi fan would enjoy this, but as I am both a theatre and Scifi genre fan, I found the format worked perfectly for me.
Upgrade (2018)
Fun combo of 80s action pack and film noir
This is a fast paced if somewhat predictable scifi that reminded me of a few other titles but mostly before its end and throughout the film I kept thinking to KITT and Michael Knight. Certainly could see this turned into a series. Finale was somewhat predictable and lacking any surprises but I doubt director wanted this to turn it into a social commentary on our continual and every growing reliance on machines (which it strongly emphasizes) but more of an action packed "chase the bad guys" type that sells tickets and brings in revenue. That said its a movie worth a look and you won't feel bored at the end of it with gorey visuals, cyberpunk references, mobsters and car chases. Oh and plenty computer chips .
Oxygène (2021)
A riveting one woman performance
The role is extremely challenging but the actress playing the sole character delivers. From start to finish the movie is structured almost like a theatre play, in fact I could very well see this performed on a stage . I wont reveal too much of plot, suffice to say even tough not highly original, the execution is brilliant. Ending is what could be expected . If you're a fan of action packed scifi you will probably think it's not your cup of tea. I enjoyed it. Watch it and see for yourself.
Louis van Beethoven (2020)
Realistic and accurate
There are many legends surrounding the life of the "Bonn" giant. That being said, the director of this movie follows Beethoven's life pretty close, it captures snapshots of his life, it doesn't pretend to be an all encompassing full length depiction of Beethoven's life, however it touches on the important pieces : childhood, friendships, first love and musical influences. I love how he discovered Bach in Neefe's living room piano (or was it harpsichord?) I also like how individuals are depicted in a way that has a major impact on Beethoven's character and sense of morals. He was in my opinion a man with a backbone and strong principles in an era of servitude and platitudes ("The melody needs to be more cantabile... Those sound like cannons Louis! Cannon fire!"). The Austrian lead does great service to the character he depicts and is somehow similar in facial features. I recommend it to all Music History teachers as it shows a person, a real person, a man and not a legend as we are all accustomed to hearing about.
The 5th Wave (2016)
Hollywood messing up
Having read the books I can say I cannot understand why Hollywood tries so hard to mess up a story which is quite decent. Cassie is not curly haired and she looks like a beauty queen throughout the film, not like the virtual plain girl the way she is depicted in the book . Oh and the beauty pageant high school chick manages to totally subdue an Army sergeant with God knows how many years of service and training, not to mention the augmentations done by aliens via nanites. Since we are on the subject of Reznick, why is he...a she?. Ben looks like a geek not a quarterback. Ringer is an emo chick. Lots if inconsistencies and feels like it's rushed.
Dimension 404 (2017)
What the?...
Is this show for real? People were paid for this? Total waste of budget. Watched only episode 2 felt like a z rated movie.
Altered Carbon (2018)
A bit of film noir and Kill Bill all blended into Neuromancer
Certainly entertaining, keeps you on your toes although they could do well without the Tarantino kill scenes , alot of gore and the plot that would make soap opera inventors proud(all the Spanish would certainly make you think of telenovelas). Loved the Takeshi and Ortega romance and the actors' chemistry.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
All of you complaining
Nothing in the Universe is destroyed yet nothing stays the same. All of you neyseyers forgot about the IDIC principle? Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations? Does it sound familiar? This show happens within the Star Trek universe. Ships, technologies, etc. So the bridge and the ship look more sophisticated than a Constellation class (which we now know after episode 10 they are aware of the design), so Klingons look different, poetic license people, this is NOT Gene Rodenberry's Star Trek. IT's something different. I agree the writing is a bit bad at times and with the parallel universe they simply took the road more travelled, but that being said, I like Star Trek Discovery. I can barely wait to see what happens to the Discovery crew in the Terran Empire
